Can anyone recommend me any good novels where the protagonist is a Native American? Any genre.

Maybe "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian", by Sherman Alexie?

I think maybe Neil Gaiman might have a few? (I'm not sure.)

I know there are some out there that've I've read or heard or... just can't think of the titles right now. I'll be back. :)

"Julia" sound

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
A year ago, I listened to this sound and got proper "hairs on the back of my neck" uncanniness from it. Now, when I looked it up, it sounds much less like a demonic underwater voice saying "Julia". What gives?

Fanfic sex tips

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
So I know it's common knowledge that fanfic sex is nothing like real sex and the things that happen in fanfic would be dangerous/impossible/unpleasant to try IRL, but there have got to be some out there written by people who have actually had sex or at least have gone through betas who have. Can anyone rec me some fics featuring interesting or varied sex techniques (not just the basics or the infamously vague "thing with their tongue", stuff I could actually use) that would not cause laughter or permanent damage? Any fandom is okay, although I'm more familiar with TV shows, specifically genre shows. FYI I'm a bisexual female, so all gender variations are welcome.

There's probably more colour than you'd think here! And to add to that, a hardy litle spider.

[personal profile] joltymcjolterson 2012-07-12 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Remember when I said today's pics would be related to yesterday's? Well, they are! Only we're going in the exact opposite direction of melanism... and it's not albinism, but rather leucism. Where melanism means increased pigmentation, leucism reduces it. Leucistic animals often can be mistaken for albinism, but albinism only affects melanin production and not other pigments. Leucism can also occur partially while albinism covers everything- if you see an animal that's patchy-ly white as opposed to all white, chances are it's not albino but leucistic. Furthermore, most leucistic animals tend to have normal coloured eyes as opposed to red eyes. This isn't that cute (unless you like crocodiles and alligators!) but provides a quick comparison of what albino and leucistic animals look compared against each other. As with yesterday, all the images come first, then names at the end.

OP of the Twilight Moms Secret a Couple of Days Back

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I would have said something about this the day the secret was posted, but my mother (who is a middle aged woman that I adore in every way) was in a medical crisis and I spent the night at the hospital with her and had no computer with me.

Anyway, what I just want to put out there, is that I in no way meant to say that it was middle-aged women in general who started and perpetuated the crazy. I was talking about the specific online group "Twilight Moms". They were the ones who started the crazy. At the very least, they were the first very frikkin' terrifying people to show up. The way they talked/talked at the time about Robert Pattinson and the way they stalked the male cast to their hotels during the filming of Twilight? So very creepy. If this had been older men on the set paying that kind of attention to Kristen Stewart, they would have been arrested or at least called creepy pervs and made to leave.

Though I do stand by calling that group crazy bitches. I call 'em as I see 'em.

Fandom ruined my childhood loves

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
We've all been there, a young - perhaps even naive - fan-thing, exploring the wonders of the internet. We've all gone "hey, that thing that I loved from my childhood, let me google that!" and then we've all vastly regretted it, in one sense or another.

So tell me fellow fan-things. What bit of nostalgia have you innocently google-image searched and - out of the blue - then been HORRIFIED to find? What was rule-34'd that you'd never thought possible to rule-34? What sweet and beautiful thing from the golden memories of your precious childhood was turned into explicit, pornographic fanart? Please share your lolarious experiences.

Me: I decided to google my favourite childhood playstation game, Spyro the Dragon to see if it was still a thing - and then BAM! PURPLE DRAGON PORN. BIG PURPLE DRAGON PENIS. AND THEN I COULD NOT STOP LOOKING, EVEN IN MY HORROR.

how 'bout you?

mysterious movie?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been looking for a movie, and it's driving me crazy that I can't find any trace of it.

Maybe one of you know what it is? Any help would be welcome:

I was very young when I watched this (somewhere in the nineties), so my memories are very scarce. It was an Arabian themed fantasy film.

The bad guy was some sort of supernatural being named Calypso (possibly Calypto?). At the end of the movie, the heroes trap him inside a mirror, but then it turns out that it didn't work - I think he traps the heroes inside the mirror instead - and so the the bad guy wins in the end. This is what made such a strong impression on me, actually.

The hero is a teenager whose mother is missing in the real world, but he later finds her in the "Arabian" world - she turns out to be the queen of a group of man-eating women. She assures him that she's very proud of him.

Around the middle of the movie, there's a philosophical contemplation about the desert being a sea of sand, where a mentor figure compares the hero to Simbad.

An old man, possibly the hero's grandfather, is reading the story of the movie in a book, back in the real world. I think there was a close-up of his terrified face when he read the ending where the heroes were trapped inside the magical mirror.

And maybe I'm thinking of another movie, but just before Calypso breaks free, when the heroes (the boy and his love interest) think they had defeated him, one of them asks "To China?" and the other answers "To China", when contemplating what to do now that they had saved the world.

I still remember the music that first plays when the ending credits roll and I could totally tell if that was the one from this movie if I heard it again now, if that helps you locate the movie somehow.

So, this movie...I can see why Nick pretended it didn't exist for so long. It's so bad, but in a so-bad-it's-good way. After rewatching it a little while ago, I have to say...I can see why it was seen as scary for kids. But some parts are so cheesy, but then so dark (Locking the kid with the corpses? Ha ha)

League Of Legends Zyra Comment

(Anonymous) 2012-07-13 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
So, Zyra's art is out, and a bunch of people (From what I can tell, mostly men-unsure) are angry that she isn't naked anymore. And she's too 'angry', and not 'sexy' enough.

While personally I think the hole "leaf-over-naughty-bits-show-as-much-skin-as-possible" isn't the most woman friendly thing they could have done, it's still so much better than the idea of a completely naked woman running around a battlefield. I also love that she's not a seductress, which most of the people complaining thought she would/should be. She's a hungry (literally) plant-hybrid that just wants to feed and destroy. Being 'sexy' isn't on her mind, and that's great.
