Unnecessary Overthinking

[personal profile] morieris 2012-07-16 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
But how do you know that the villain won't turn on you in the long run? Or do you plan to get them to lower their guard so YOU can turn on THEM?

I don't necessary think that villains are more untrustworthy than heroes, when it comes to their followers/sidekicks/whatever! In fact, sometimes I almost think they're more loyal -- I can think of a few examples where a bad guy sticks with their partner only because s/he cares for them, despite the fact that s/he disagrees with their methods.

Yeah, but once they rule the world, they have all at their beck and call. And you are probably a liability.

The thing about the kinda sociopath that will kill babies and rape dogs? They aren't good with the whole loyalty thing.

And those are the types that wanna rule the world. That, or they are cold emotionless logic robots that won't care about you.

I'm not OP, but, the way I see it, you don't need to be good to love somebody else! I think evil people can have loved ones they care about too. The fact that they are evil doesn't immediatly mean they are utterly incapable of maintaining relationships or loving people... that's a whole 'nother sack of potatoes!

This is not unnecessary. This is important shit to consider. I worked it all out when I was a kid; I'd totally double-cross them before they crossed me and there would probably be daggers involved.

I don't think I could ever be happy with someone who was exploiting the rest of the planet. :/ Even if I was one-hundred percent sure they wouldn't turn on me because they loved me and me only.

I agree so hard. I've written fic where the girl on the side of good does darker for this kind of thing.

Sod making the bad guy good!

I don't know, villains have a knack for losing against the odds.
Also, I don't really see what's so fun about ruling the world. Having a monstrously privileged existence, sure - but the actual ruling bit, ordering people about, keeping my power etc.? I don't think I could be bothered.

History is written by the victors! Who claim afterwards that they were the good guys all along ;)

I have mixed feelings about this. I can understand the concept of loving someone that isn't perfect, or that is even very much not a good person, but I'm not the 'rule the universe with an iron fist' sort. And while in fantasy world that might be OKAY, in real life being with this type of person would most likely go extremely bad for you, and you might not live to realize your mistake. Hell, even in many fictional universes these sort of relationships don't end well.

I guess if you don't want anything even remotely near a healthy or safe relationship this is the road to take.

Have you read Gone by Michael Grant? I feel like you could relate to Diana and Caine...

I think the main Gargoyles canon pulls this off actually very well.

You mean Xanatos and Fox? They kinda woobified them eventually; not entirely, they were still all about power up to the end (at least as I remember it from yeeeaaaars ago), but they definitely weren't the same brand of cool and insidious once Alex came along.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I have never seen anyone talk about that. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, or that you're lying, just that... is this a thing? What fandoms does it happen in? I've seen plenty of redemption fic but I don't think I've really ever seen that kind of redemption fantasy.

Mostly in my fandoms, hot villains just get people talking about how hot they are. Less insertion of self.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
What, a character's love reforms the bad guy? A very very very old trope. I don't think you're looking properly.

You know what this secret needs? The Phineas and Ferb Evil Love Song.

One of my favorite tropes is the Evil But Sincerely Devoted Couple. Where they're both horrible and/or insane bad guys, but by fuck, they would do absolutely anything for each other. You don't see very many, though - they always turn on each other at the end. But when they show up now and then, they're a treat. It's an easy way to give even an irredeemable bad guy some humanity.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
MTE. I love this trope SO MUCH, but it's hardly ever done well. Sometimes out of lazy writing, sometimes because, idk, for some reason people think that being in love makes villains weak/unbelievable. (As though there are no criminals irl that love their families?) I'm with the OP; give me a good ol' Bonnie and Clyde pairing any day.

...even if they keep trying to kill each other for fun.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I'm most find of situations wherein a good guy and a bad guy meet somewhere in the middle between thermonuclear war and hugs and puppies. Some of my favorite fics have that as the endgame, rather than the bad guy getting neutered redeemed all the way.

You want to fuck the Bad Guy? Honey, I want to be the Bad Guy. Lord knows, if superpowers were real, and I had them, fuck the hero schtick, I'd be all over running at least a part of this world. Why would I want to help motherfuckers, when I can crush them? You are selling yourself short, anon. Don't warm their bed, fucking kill that bastard in their sleep and take everything they have like the badass bitch you know you are.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-07-17 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
See I would totally agree with you but I also know myself and if I had superpowers as soon as I got my first minion I would take to my bed with my lover The Internet forever and only occasionally interact with Minion to demand more succulent foods or perhaps the occasional hottie brought to me.

I would be the world's laziest overlord.

Not OP, but... what's wrong with both? I think OP's aiming more for a ruling together scenario, which is really the best of both worlds. You're a villain, and you don't have to do it by yourself! I'm scatterbrained as fuck and I don't really like being alone, so I'd much rather rule the world as a team. If you genuinely liked each other, you'd get a better flow of ideas going, too- I am just one person, I am going to be shortsighted at times, and having somebody I could trust to cover my blind spots when it comes to planning could make it much easier, and I'd do the same for them. Plus if my co-villain is in charge of half the things, that's half the things I get to worry about a little less. If we're a couple, we'd probably be sharing all the money and power anyway, so that's a good deal.

And if both parties set it up right, I don't think you'd have to worry as much about backstabbing? If my subjects know and like me (and hey, I'd be plying them with ill-gotten loot and social progress, they'd like me) but don't really know about my co-villain (and vice-versa), there would be a strong incentive for neither of us to backstab as long as either kingdom could cause a lot of trouble for the other. I could get together a team of secret police and condition them to be loyal only to me (and pay them well enough so that bribery from my partner's end would be less effective), and then if I die under any suspicious circumstance then they'd investigate my partner. If my partner was more likely to be guilty than not, they'd stir up a rebellion. My partner would know I had precautions, but not the details, and I'd encourage them to take precautions too and not tell me the details, and nobody would be murdered.

Plus it just seems to be more fun with two. There's somebody around to appreciate your villainy! If I was going to be a villain, I'd like to have fun with it :D
