You will begin to make peace with things. It will take some time, but you should believe that you can do it. I'm sorry for what you're going through, and I'm sorry it was triggered so suddenly. I haven't seen the video, but I know what it's like to experience an awful impact like that. Believe in your own strength, and keep your eyes open to the beauty of the world. You still have power in your life and (I hope) things you can turn to against fear.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's not good for you, then please don't watch it.

On top of that, he's just one man. He doesn't have any idea what happens in the afterlife. It might be nothing, but it might not.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
He doesn't know any more about what happens after death than you do. Anything he says is just conjecture and guesswork. If you like the idea of heaven, believe in heaven. Seriously, unless he has come back from of the dead, his opinion (and that's what it is) doesn't mean anything.

I'm going to assume you lost your faith? From that video? Was it not strong to begin with?

Whilst I'm not an expert, can't you reestablish links with your $deity/s through prayer or reading or community? I understand that faith sometimes is a struggle and needs to be reaffirmed. Or, if you now believe there is no caring higher power/s, I'd suggest you, get thee to some atheist community/literature and understand how they cope without a heaven (pretty well). But change/transition is scary at first.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-09-07 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry. :(

I actually find the idea that I will some day cease to exist really relieving and motivating.

But honestly, this one dude has no more proof than anyone else about what happens after we die. If the idea of an afterlife is comforting to you, you go ahead and believe in an afterlife (if you can - I know belief isn't that easy to turn on and off).

Bonus points for mentioning panic attacks because all the cool kids on the internet are pretending to have them these days. It's hilariously over-the-top in its "WOE IS ME" overtones, but short and concise enough to be almost, almost believable.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
People who are just going on about how he doesn't know about the afterlife and junk about faith aren't really getting the point.

OP, I completely understand what you're going through 100%. I experienced something similar for over a year (though the trigger was different for me) and it became an endless spiral of anxiety and depression and panic. No matter what your trigger was (mine was kind of silly), don't be like me. Get help. Talk to someone. See a therapist. Do something to get your head out of that negative place, because it'll just get worse like it did for me.

But I will say that it did get better (eventually) and I eventually got over it, and it's mostly a task of forcing yourself not to think about huge, ridiculous questions about afterlife or existence and avoiding anything that could trigger it. (So basically never watch anymore of his videos or it'll just remind you).

I myself wish I'd talked to someone and gotten some kind of help for it, because even after three years it's kind of affected how I perceive the world and things similar.

Please be safe and please get it taken care of. )8 Existential crisis is no good for anyone.

I'm not buying what you are trying to sell, OP. You mean to tell me you've never questioned life, death and your place in the grand scheme of things until some dude on the Internet made a video about life after death or the lack thereof?

You've never imagined there's no heaven? (It's easy if you try.)

The mind blanks at the glare. Not in remorse
—The good not done, the love not given, time
Torn off unused—nor wretchedly because
An only life can take so long to climb
Clear of its wrong beginnings, and may never;
But at the total emptiness for ever,
The sure extinction that we travel to
And shall be lost in always. Not to be here,
Not to be anywhere,
And soon; nothing more terrible, nothing more true.

This is a special way of being afraid
No trick dispels. Religion used to try,
That vast moth-eaten musical brocade
Created to pretend we never die,
And specious stuff that says No rational being
Can fear a thing it will not feel
, not seeing
That this is what we fear—no sight, no sound,
No touch or taste or smell, nothing to think with,
Nothing to love or link with,
The anaesthetic from which none come round.

Welcome to atheism. Don't worry, you learn to deal with it. We all do. I spent half my childhood fearing oblivion. What worked for me was to find something to live for, rather than just wanting to continue living.

Obviously this guy doesn't know more than the next guy, but what would you do if concrete proof comes out that there's nothing beyond this world? You must have at least considered the possibility if just one video of a kid talking about it affected you so much.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry you're going through this, OP. I've had a similar experience before too, and although it was pretty horrible, I do feel like I am a better person for having gone through it. One of the things it helped me realize is that even though there may be no afterlife, I *do* exist here and now, and so do countless other lifeforms. (lol no shit sherlock.) Since we all have to live out our existences, anything I can do to make theirs a little better is a very fulfilling idea to me, and gives me a sense of purpose in my life.

Good luck with your journey, OP. It's going to be difficult, but I believe you will make it in the end.

First of all, sorry that happened to you.

Second, not having seen the video I don't know if this is covered, but in all the philosophies, religions, traditions, and faiths of the world, there are tons of options other than the standard idea of "heaven" (or "hell," for that matter) and "*poof* go out like a candle flame". Maybe you could look into some of those?

[personal profile] gobbledigook 2012-09-08 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Think of it like this, if you're sound of mind enough that you can't just go back to deluding yourself, then you'll probably be fine.

There's still a lot of things that make this one life valuable and worth living by itself. You'll probably find them out as you come to terms with all of this.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Obsessing about death, if you have no fucking clue what comes after, is pretty damn rockbottom stupid if you have a life to live.

It blows my mind that anyone gives a toss about not existing one day. It would have never occurred to me, if it wasn't such a common sentiment that I hear it all the time.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Before you were born, you did not exist.

Was non-existence painful for you?

If not, death isn't going to be bad, either.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Just wanted to tell you that I completely understand that feeling, and I'm sorry you're now going through this. I personally find some comfort in knowing there are others out there who think like this, so I hope this will help you, at least a little.

Hang in there, anon. You can do it.
