I'm in an industry where all the guys want to talk about sports and shit I know nothing about. Being comic book smart makes you the nerd they beat up in high school. So I have to fake caring about the Cowboys or whatever other shit. I wish someone there knew anything about comics.

I even have a hard time dragging the hubs to the comic book store. He's geeky about other things.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was going to say this. You must be in a nerdy industry or something because talking about comic books would not endear me to anyone. o_O

There's probably Cowboys slash fanfic you could read...

This secret confuses me. Are you a comic book artist or something (in which case, one should know one's industry)? If you're at work, shouldn't you be talking about work-related topics? Why would one need to discuss non-work related stuff at work? Also, I am curious as to what job you have, since your social interactions seem to be important to you.

Fyi, I'm a historian. I mostly do restoration, but I also like to do field work as well. I have never felt the need to befriend or socialize with my co-workers (I'm a pretty big introvert), but it doesn't affect my performance. In my field, focusing on the task at hand is appreciated more than wagging our tongues. When I do engage in conversation with my co-workers, it is always on historical subject matter (as it should be at work, I thought).

I figured most work places are like this, but I am exceptionally curious as to what you do now! It must be very social industry; perhaps entertainment?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
NA

... Yeah, you must be a real introvert. Every environment I've worked in, we all socialized. Billing for cell phone companies, sales, retail, collections, police stations...

Most workplaces are not like that. You do something you love, and would be likely be doing for fun anyway. Most workplaces, people are doing things they find fairly meaningless in and of themselves, and so they talk to their co-workers about things they're interested in.

Most jobs have at least some requirement to socialize, even in academia, and many people's social circles are at least partially based on their co-workers. I'd say your situation is the more unusual one, anon.

I've worked at a variety of places and I've never been at any where people don't talk to others about work unrelated subjects. Even if it's "what did you do this weekend" or "have you heard this bit of news".

The fact that you hadn't is rather surprising to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, that's some extreme introvertness there if you don't even exchange social pleasantries with /some/ of your co-workers. And it's possible to talk about non-related stuff at work /and/ perform your given task properly.

I've worked in academia and retail and I assure you, we still socialize amongst ourselves; socializing is not limited to the entertainment industry.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you never take breaks at work? Do you not get a lunch? How is it possible that you never speak of anything that is not 100% work-related? I'm having difficulty fathoming this.

You ask why people would need to discuss non-work related stuff at work. Here's the reason: most people feel a need to develop relationships with those with whom they spend a good deal of time. Most people feel the need to make friends (and, after you've left school, the place you're most likely to make friends is at work). I would hazard a guess that, despite the nature of your work, your co-workers are probably discussing non-work related things with one another. They aren't with you because you're aloof.

By the way, I currently work in finance, and I've done time in the insurance industry, as well. I've never been in an environment where people don't chat, at least occasionally. I've also made friends with various co-workers and spend time with them outside of work. Social interaction may not be important to you because of your extremely introverted nature, but that isn't typical -- regardless of the type of job.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, who gives a shit? I mean, it's not like comics are holy scripture or something. And it's not like having a lot of in-depth knowledge about comics makes you some kind of high priest of comics-knowing-aboutness. They're a bunch of funnybooks about colorful, brilliant adolescent adventures. Sometimes they become amazing and profound, but for the most part, there's nothing inherently awesome about having read a whole lot of comics.

You're chill with me, at least.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Most reasonable people don't care, but you'd be surprised how many guys will give a girl 'cool' points for having comic book knowledge and would not be happy to hear it if the girl didn't really read that many comics.

I wish I could do this. I work in a male-dominated office, and even though I know a fair amount about the "guy stuff" my coworkers talk about, they just talk over me like I'm not there anyway. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-10-27 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
God it's so dumb what women have to go through to fit in at work.

No hate OP, I go through similar things with trying to fit in the boys club of my male dominated industry. I hate it.

Eh, sucks you have to do it, but work it.

I've had to do it before. The sad thing is, the thing I knew about was actually something I like. I just didn't have the money/time to get really into it even though I wanted to. But if I had actually said that I doubt he would have understood.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Why not read comics?

I keep writing a deleting stuff but it just comes down to I'm a female fan of comics and I find it gross that you would lie just to get men's approval.

My at my last job all my co-workers were crazy religious and I didn't pretend to like Jesus to become their friends.

I think this is kind of adorable.

Keep in mind the guys you're discussing comics with aren't necessarily well-read in comics either. They may not be getting their knowledge from slash fanfic, but they might know a lot of what they know due to reading comics encyclopedias and wikis and such. This is particularly true for older characters where there's an exceptionally large amount of canon to plow through and even when re-print collections are available, not everyone wants to read every back-issue first before jumping into the current storyline.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, same, except I get my knowledge not from fanfictions but from TvTropes. In fact I know more about comics and video games than the guys because I read the whole history and tropes page in one go.

To be fair I find the history and development of American comics fascinating, especially how the changes in the writing and characterizations reflects the ideological changes in society. "Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics" is my favourite documentary, I wish there's a Marvel version as well.

All my comic knowledge comes from... discussions on f!s. And Linkara sometimes. I don't actually know comic fans IRL though myself. We just squee over the movies which we enjoy. I have like two set of comics I bought on a whim (one of those bound collections)- Watchmen and Batman and the Outsiders.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-29 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah! Similar story: I tutor elementary school kids, and I was paired up with a young boy last spring who was giving me a bit of trouble until finally, one day, I altered one of his homework assignments (about narrative/order/chronology) to be about Captain America instead of Cinderella, and he was like, "O.O /You/ know about comics?" and then we became biffles for the rest of the semester. It was great. He was super cooperative and learned a lot and we both had fun as a result!

... and I never mentioned that 3/4 of my Cap knowledge comes from info gleaned to read Cap/Tony fic. xD

A lot of the super hero fandom doesn't seem to even read the comics, so I doubt they'd really be surprised.
