Since quite a lot of fans agree Supernatural fandom is it's own level of awful, I think OP might actually be right on the ball. Wanky about it, sure, but still correct.

Are there good corners of SPN fandom, though? Because I've been desperately looking for some good SPN blogs to follow on tumblr and pretty much every single one of them is at some point full of disgusting hate for some of the characters. It's like SPN fandom is incapable of just not talking about the characters they dislike instead of mentioning in every second post how XYZ is THE WORST EVER.

I was really only active in the ff.net part of fandom and a little part of LJ (mainly the beginnings of the Castiel nuttiness), but I pretty much agree. Jumping off that crazy train is one of the best things I did for my fandom well-being.

There are some ugly parts of SPN fandom, no lie, but the majority of it is really wonderful. I've met a lot of really lovely people in it. I know there are some corners that are wanky/a little bit on the terrifying side, but I'm pretty sure most really intense fandoms have that?
And what are you talking about, season gr8, y'all.

Was I the only one who looked at that page and was like, SPNfamily really, that's the best you can do?

Hm, I can say that Glee, TVD and OUAT can be like that, too, though, from what I've seen in the blogs of my friends who are in those fandoms. In fact, that can apply to pretty much any fandom. It also depends on your experience. I have had a really awesome experience in SPN fandom, and have met some of the sweetest, mellowest people possible, who are now among my best friends, even if we're all stepping out of SPN. So. Yeah. It depends. *shrug*

I sort of agree OP, but I think it's just the natural trend in a long lived fandom and not just something unique to SPN. I used to be active in the Harry Potter fandom, until it turned really nasty. I think people originally gather in a few places, but then arguments spring up. In order to preserve peace, the fandom fragments and set up "safe places" for fans with specific views. These places, in turn, turn into circle jerks where everyone just reinforces each other's opinions and dissent is squashed. When they come into contact with fans who do not share their now narrow views, wank fests explode. This is the current state of SPN fandom, I think.

While I haven't been in SPN fandom in years I'll admit it was pretty bad even back then. Still, Once fandom is pretty damn wanky itself, and it hasn't been around nearly as long as SPN. So...give it time, I guess? I can't say anything about the other fandoms because I've never been involved in them.

Did it mainly start when Castiel joined? How much did his joining the cast change the makeup of the fandom? What did people wank about in the early days vs the recent seasons? When did the J2 tinhats appear? Did fandom ever like female characters or is the SPN fans hate women thing a new development? What are the big recurring topics people wank about? Do people have shipping wars with Ron the Death Eater bashing of competing partners in this fandom?

Tellllllll meeeeee...I'm so curious....

I dunno, the Sherlock fandom seems to have the title of 'Worst Fandom' for me. SPN definitely comes in second though.

That's basically every fandom ever, though, lol. With fandoms like SPN that are so huge, the wank just seems more pronounced because there are more people, and therefore there's going to be more wank. And honestly, the crazy ass J2 tinhatters aside, we still haven't reached HP or LotR levels of crazy.

Don't get me wrong, there is some crazy, awful shit that happens but... I can say that about every fandom I've been in, really. Except maybe for a few of the less active and more obscure ones, but that's mostly because people are just so grateful that any fandom exists that wank usually doesn't surface. And with any fandom, honestly, I think it depends on who you surround yourself with. Don't like certain parts of fandom? Find ways to avoid them or if things start to annoy you too much, step back and take a break. It will do wonders for your sanity.

(Also, Osric Chau is totally voting for us. I take that as a sign.)

Gotta say, as someone who has never seen this show and knows nothing about it or the fandom, even I know about the time a fan complained about one of the actors bringing his girlfriend to a convention, refering to her as "carry-on baggage" and (seriously?) asking a security guard if she could be removed.

And yes, I'm well aware that this was ONE person who doesn't represent the entire fan-base, but...still. I never forgot that wank report.

IDK what you're talking about OP. The Dean/Cas fans on Tumblr are almost nauseating in their happiness over, well, everything.

Seriously. I recently went over to the dark side (Tumblr) and was astonished at just how freaking happy the Dean/Cas fans are over there. They LOVE the show and are pretty positive in general, it seems.

(And echoing what everyone else has said - more than just today, but a million times- about SPN fandom not being that bad. I've been in it for two years and have yet to become involved in any wank, mostly because I avoid it like the plague - and in the past two years have had no problem doing so.)

Pretty sure the award for the worst fandom goes to the Sherlock fans, if only because the Supernatural fans stick to their own fandom while the Sherlock fans hijack posts from other fandoms ALL THE TIME to turn them into some crossover bullshit. But the Supernatural fandom is pretty unpleasant too.

I must be doing Fandom wrong because I very rarely see any of the legendary wakery the SPN fandom supposedly suffers from.

(Oh, I've seen a bit of the ridiculous hate for specific actors (Jared), and the wives (Danneel) on Twitter, but I suspect I miss a hell of a lot because I'm not on Tumblr.)

I actually avoided watching Supernatural for six years because of the fandom's reputation. I knew that if I watched the show I'd want to read the fic and all I ever heard about SPN fans was wincest and fanwank.

Then I gave in and watched the show, fell in love with it and went searching for fics.

Maybe I've been lucky, but I've found that the fanwank is actually from a VERY vocal minority. And they tend to congregate on the same websites, which is handy since it makes them very easy to avoid. Most of the fans that I've met have been lovely, intelligent people who just want to squee about the show and enjoy the brotherly love/angst.

So my point is, I once thought the same as you, OP, and my experience of the fandom has been anything but. IT's fantastic!
