Cool related fact I saw on QI: The average human skeleton replaces itself once every 10 years. So this is already happening. I think it's kind of exciting too.

Well where I live nobody ever talks to me about heaven, but if they did I could probably come up with something more diplomatic than "It's a pretty lie". I guess that's why this is a secret.

I tell everyone I know that it's just a story that humans tell each other because they afraid of death. Basically, the whole reason for religion.

I particularly like to tell that to the bible bashers who knock on my door.

And this is the sort of thing that makes me have a compete meltdown because I DON'T UNDERSTAND NOT EXISTING. I'm starting to have a panic attack right now. I'd rather think "Yes I'll continue somewhere else" because I'd rather do that than just... not be.

I don't understand the point of it otherwise, you know? I don't like the thought of death. At all. I'd rather lie to myself so I don't have an existential meltdown every two days.

I'm all for different beliefs, but I don't get why people think heaven is more likely to be a pretty lie than not-heaven being a not-pretty lie.

Well, that's pretty close to my own ideas on the subject, frankly, but unless the person i'm talking to wants to know what i think, i basically keep mum. Xians who are really *invested* will get shrill and hateful, and that's boring, and you can't always tell if you're talking to a reasonable person or a fanatic.

But if they ask? I will definitely tell them my views on 'heaven'.

I'm cheerfully agnostic. As far as I'm concerned, I'll find out when I get there, and anything before that is just supposition.

The one thing I do rather like about this thought, though, is that if nothingness is what happens after death, no-one who believed differently will ever know they were wrong. They won't have time. For that matter, no-one who believed in the nothingness will ever know they were right, either. There is something rather egalitarian about that. That there is no triumph of superiority in death, only its simple fact. Heh.

But then, I enjoy the thought of rather a lot of the posited possibilities after death. Reincarnation is a fascinating idea, particularly the versions which cycle through the realisation of self to some distant pure state. I find the idea of an existence dedicated to learning a good one. The idea of subsumation into the base of what is living is also not a bad one. *shrugs* There are many intriguing ideas about what exists after death.

In the lack of knowledge, though, I can't, at least for myself, rate any of them more likely than any other. I cannot say, with honesty, that I believe in any of them, only that there are some I would hope for more than others.

However, since right now the only way one knows for sure is to die, I think I shall not worry so much about it. Whatever happens when I die, I'll deal with it then. Until that time, there's not much point in worrying about things I know nothing about.

OP, apologies for the ramble. If that is what you believe, fair enough. At the current rate of knowledge, you're as likely to be right as anyone, and sooner or later we'll all find out one way or another.

I've never been able to understand the concept of believing one's soul/consciousness just ceases to exist, personally. It's like...what's sustaining us right now? Why are things "alive" in the first place? Also I find it interesting how most of these conversations regarding the afterlife tend to be either "eternal paradise" or "complete annihilation," especially when there are so many other beliefs, like reincarnation for example. Or the idea of becoming one with God (or whatever you wish to call the idea of a divine, eternal presence that sustains the universe), although this is what many believes Heaven to be.

The idea of being "gone forever" is actually the most comforting thing ever for me. It's what I tell myself when I'm feeling really hopeless--one day I will just not exist and none of this will matter anymore.
