George Lucas lost the battle with his own beard.

Jackson forgot one.

I watched the Star Wars series in the "natural order" (1-6), not knowing that Lucas filmed them in that queer way, and I could never figure out why people hate the second trilogy. For me there were no differences in quality. Like, absolutely none.

I think that's a false comparison.

Firstly, because a lot in this case also depends on the source material.

Secondly, despite its failings, The Hobbit still manages to capture the magic of that universe better than the new Star Wars trilogy.

Thirdly, because there is no Jar-Jar.

It's funny how much fans hate on George Lucas and paint him as some kind of villain even though he's donated loads to charity.

Yeah ... I haven't seen The Hobbit but I sort of get the same feeling. Which is one reason I haven't seen the movie yet, plus I don't really feel like paying $30+ to see three movies that should have been one.

I haven't really seen Star Wars, but I guess the basic gist of this secret is about Peter Jackson making movies as prequels that are worse than the originals? And maybe some undertones of cash grabbing?

Anyway, I thought The Hobbit was a really great movie in its own right, but to each their own.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-27 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I really think you're overestimating modern George Lucas

like, man, he is really, really terrible these days at making movies

I'm not defending Peter Jackson, it's just an extremely low and almost cruel comparison you've set for him. even if he's bad he's not... that.

OT

(Anonymous) 2012-12-27 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Vaguely related: Since Google seems to yield me no specifics and this thread is bound to be full of knowledgeable nerds, just what is going on with Lucas' neck? Someone once told me it was a goiter, someone else said it was cancer, another shmuck informed me that he's growing another Death Star in there. Do any of you hardcore Star Wars fans know the true answer?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-27 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Till Jackson refuses to release the original versions of the movies, after he's edited/revisioned/redigitilized/revitalized/re-whatever fifty bajillion times. Then you can say he's like Lucas. Jackson has a long way to go before he's perfected the art of milking his fanbase for every cent they're worth.

If you're talking about the three Hobbit movies for a single novel. Yeah, that looks like a pure money grab. Not Lucas level, but a money grab.

Jackson hasn't BEGUN to pull the shit that Lucas has pulled on his fans.

Peter Jackson has a lot longer way to fall if he is ever going to compare to Lucas. The Hobbit was slow paced -- but it still had better action, more character, better sound and cinemitography and a better story than the Star Wars I-III -- which frankly had the most unmemorable plot and characters of any movie that I've paid to see in theaters. I mean literally, I can not remember a single thing about what those movies were about. All I can remember is that Jar Jar was embarrassing and Padme wore a lot of make up. Oh and midiclorians were a bullshit retcon to remove spirtuality from the force.

Nope. The Hobbit was great.
fingalsanteater: (Default)

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-12-27 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. Jackson is an imaginative and competent director, where Lucas is a bit of a hack.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-27 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
You know what? I'd still pay the cash money to see all three movies. In fact, I'm fucking pleased that there are three rather none. If you don't like/want to watch the movies, then don't. Stop fucking complaining.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-27 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't bored during the Hobbit.

The Hobbit also wasn't one of the most anticipated geekgasms ever and then turn out to be a terrible, terrible movie and a ginormous letdown full of CGI poop jokes and lifeless characters who droned in monotones.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-27 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
I was worried that this was happening, too, but after having seen the Hobbit I think it wasn't all that bad. He's definitely not gone to quite the dark, sad, pitiful failure of a place that Lucas went to.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-27 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
You know I keep hearing this tripe. And often it comes along with "Oh, Avatar is a better film, they did the 3D and graphics better."

And that just tells me everything I need to know about their tastes.
