I don't know anything about this book, but I love this secret.

A book so terrible that you don't even want it as a gift? Ha.

The movie was pretty meh, too. My daughter liked it but i was just all....really?

[personal profile] lovelycudy 2013-01-07 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved the film, I wonder if the book is different?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. Maybe it was something with the POV of the book? I've really enjoyed some of the author's other work. I'm actually kind of curious to read it now.

I found the book and film pretty similar. The film seemed to focus a little more on Kirsten Dunst's character, from what I can remember.

I like the movie better than the book. It gave the girls a sense of reality outside the limited POV of the novel. Also, great soundtrack.

Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn, how ungrateful. What's with the ungrateful attitude regarding gifts on this comm? Someone took the time to pick out something they probably thought you'd like and you feel like you should've gotten a "real present." Just be happy you got anything at all, even if it was a book you didn't like.

You sound young and entitled. Grow the fuck up.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
They're not throwing it back in the person's face, and you don't know anything about their relationship with the person who gave it to them.

Obv we don't know the situation here, but from experience I can tell you that when someone who knows you well and actively disapproves of your taste, likes, and interests takes every occasion to show you the things they wish you were reading/wearing, it gets kind of old...

Fandom is filled with middle-class Millennials with a ridiculous collective sense of entitlement, with the inability to empathize with anyone outside of their chosen peer group -- what do you expect?

I don't even get gifts 99% of the time because my family is fucking poor and some of my family don't even acknowledge that I exist, I'm happy to get anything even if it's something I don't like (I don't get rid of gifts most of the time either, unless someone else indicates that they want it, I'm literally unable to toss out something that was given to me)

I like this book. A significant part of my liking of it is down to the fact that it is skeevy, but doesn't pretend to be otherwise. The narration is quite openly from the perspective of a group of then boys who were attracted to a group of sisters mainly because of their messed up lives and mental health problems.

When I first read this as a teenage girl, shortly after being hospitalised for mental health reasons, I found it deeply unsettling and also quite cathartic.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate the book I got for christmas, but considering how openly I talk about all the books I LOVE and that my mother got me the book that her mentor/professor/academic-heavyweight offhandedly described as "genius" without any idea what it was about, I'm not going to feel too bad about being bored by it.
This book sounds like shit. Rock on, OP. Give it away. Throw it away! :D

I remember feeling this way when I read this in high school. God, what a mess.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I remember liking this book a lot. I think I'll have to dig it out and re-read it.

Ahhh! To each their own I suppose. I LOVE The Virgin Suicides.

OP here...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
The comments along the lines of OMG HOW DARE YOU NOT LIKE YOUR PRESENT IT'S A PRESENT OMG are really, really funny. Just curious... How old do I have to be before I love everything unconditionally and never feel immature, entitled emotions such as "resentment" ever again? You guys crack me up.

For the record, I thanked the person graciously and said I looked forward to reading it. If they ask me how it was, I'll say it was "interesting" and then do my best to discreetly change the subject. If pressed for details, I will outright lie, but not too gushingly in case it occurs to them to (oh please god no) buy me another damn book by this author. Just like I do for every person who gives me a book I don't like.

Though I didn't hate the Virgin Suicides half as much as I hated Middlesex. Have you read that piece of garbage, OP?

I really didn't like it either. I'm crap at articulating my feelings about books but there are some really good negative reviews on Goodreads that express all the bad things about it really well.
