I'm not inclined to give someone a break on making a fool of themselves online unless they are brand new to fandom or, I don't know, fourteen at the very oldest. Being twelve is a decent excuse for pretending to date a fictional character in public and being surprised when people laugh. Sixteen should be a hardened veteran.

I have autism and it genuinely did take me a long time to draw the line between fantasy and reality. I said and did dorky things all over the internet when I first started up in fandom at age thirteen, but by that point I had learned that the fictional characters weren't real.

Agreed. I know I'm building something out of nothing, but OP seems pretty young in this secret. The wording, specifically naming people that made them angry, expecting the fandom to come to their defense and deciding that it's the worst fandom EVAR because they didn't.

Honestly somebody 'dating' a fictional character at any age is possible, but I think it also depends on internet access. If you weren't exposed to fandom at early on...then certain social cues are harder to pick up on. I knew I was still having fun drawing self-inserts with me and my fictional husbando at 17. I knew it was just wishful thinking on my part, and I knew we weren't ACTUALLY DATING, but still.
