He deserved what he got, thats for sure.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
No he didn't. He was far from perfect (or sane, for that matter) but no one on Earth deserves a lobotomy. Do your research and learn what lobotomies do to people. They're horrible.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah they cure the rapey without killing them. Sure they might need diapers for the rest of their life, but that is a small price to pay for keeping sexual predators contained.

Prison?

Or is mutilating people your go to here.

If it was an option perhaps I could see the argument for it, but literally making people brain damaged is pretty indefensible when you have that whole 'locked up until such a point they no longer pose a risk to the public' thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Prison costs money, you need guards and lots of them as well as lots of infrastructure. Its cheaper to lobotomize rapists and molesters then turn them back out as not being a threat any more. Not to mention seeing zommbied rapists drooling and shitting themselves might discourage others from taking up the habit. Death isn't scary, prison is considered cool to a certain type of person, a living death for the rapey where the wander around shitting themselves for forty odd years is probably scary enough as a punishment. No cool and kudos points for the bad gangster wannabe in that.

Ah, you don't have a damn clue what you're talking about, okay your point makes more sense now.

I really don't know where to get you started.

I suppose first would be some papers on what a lobotomy actually entails, and then some nice easy essays on why the death penalty is a terrible idea from every perspective.

But who will pay for the upkeep of the lobotomized person? If they can't care for themselves and have no family, the cost goes right back to society at large.

Ok, but answer me this: I'm pretty sure that even lobotomized prisoners need a home and a person to take care of them. Families and state homes might fill this role at first but what would happen if no one would want to care for a lobotomized prisoner?

as others already pointed out, lobotomized people will still need to be taken care of, so the cost thing makes no sense. you're also forgetting the part where lobotomies are irreversible and the criminal justice system is not perfect. innocent people are sentenced for crimes they didn't commit, especially if they can't afford a good lawyer or are a racial minority.

i get the hatred, but your whole comment is actually pretty sick.

"when you have that whole 'locked up until such a point they no longer pose a risk to the public' thing."

Well, he was still a danger to the Nurse, obviously.

And how do you feel about chemical castration?

da

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't prevent rape-by-object, or any other form of sexual assault that don't require the arousal of the person performing the assault. It would be effective for a subset of offenders, but since it doesn't erase the underlying behavior patterns or pathologies, it wouldn't be nearly as effective as a lot of its proponents like to claim.

So not only a hideous violation of human rights, but also an ineffective one.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:45 am (UTC)(link)

In the book, the inmates were all but raped at the orders of Rached, though. No-one was ever in the right through the whole thing. The movie got rather watered-down in places because woah.

Which is to say no-one deserved it and everyone was fucked up and that was the point.

It's been ages since i've read the book or seen the movie.... What, exactly, did MacMurphy do? I thought he was kind of a small-time thief or something, and faked being mentally ill so he wouldn't have to do 'hard time' in a 'real' prison....?

And thus the lobotomy was even more awful because he wasn't actually all that 'bad' a person, just someone that the hospital hierarchy wouldn't tolerate.

yeah, I get the feeling a lot of people don't realize the reason why he attacked her is because she was making life unlivable for the inmates, including having the orderlies gang rape them every time they acted up.

Everything was fucked up and horrible. The point was that patients didn't go there to get better -- they went there to be shelved and ignored and abused.

I don't know if that's sarcasm or not, but the only problem I see with it, is if it turns out that the person was actually innocent (and the money spent to keep the person alive, and the fact that someone has to change the diapers. At least they get paid, I guess).

I think quite probably you haven't read the book.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
True, lobotomy is not a currently recommended treatment for "violent asshole".

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure we can change that, or do you believe that sexual predators should just be allowed to go on being sexual predators. You can't cure that with psychotherapy, and the drugs don't work. A little brain pan scrape, and they are good to go.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
If you're making that argument, why not just kill them?

Look into the history of lobotomy. Most people lobotomized were not rapists, or even particularly violent. It was in a time where as a psychiatric patient you basically had zero rights (it's still not perfect today, but better) and they could basically do what they wanted with you. If you were manageable for whatever reason, they could basically destroy your brain and your personality.

Seriously, you do not want to go back to a time where it's a-okay to lobotomize people.
