no such thing as male allies

I don't know what I would call that, but it wouldn't be feminism.

A few strips earlier, the girl was attacked by a bunch of guys for being a feminist. A guy who had earlier claimed to be the girl's ally was watching nearby, and did nothing to help her. That's the context for the strip.

I don't think the author is trying to say there's no male allies (especially since he supposedly IS one), I think this is a commentary on how sometimes male allies fall short of their duties because they don't always get or understand what women go through.. The guy in the strip who claimed to be a male ally, that character has always been kind of a self-insert for the author, so maybe it's him admitting that even though he cares about women's issues, he's been guilty of standing by when he knew something needed to be done.

I could be wrong of course, that's just my interpretation of it.

dude, but isn't that how it feels sometimes? And what's wrong with saying having what looks like a young girl saying that after a bad experience? Especially since a good amount of allies on anything (be it women's rights, LGBT rights, Civil rights) sometimes are fucking assholes that talk over the people they want to help and try to dictate how we should act, react, and think.

I disagree with the idea that men can't be feminists/men can only be allies/men can't be allies, too, but keep in mind that feminism is an incredibly diverse set of ideas. The definition of women's rights is not one that is set in stone, and just because someone disagrees with your notion of it does not mean that they're not feminists.

One of the main reasons I can't get myself to actively involve myself in feminism is the constant policing going on within the community. Pro-life feminists aren't feminists, they're working against the cause! Radfems aren't feminists, they're crazy! Feminists who don't do intersectionality aren't feminists, they only want rights for cis hetero white women!

Seriously, cut it out.

IDK, if the strip shown is anything to go by, it's on the radfem "all men are evil" side, and that wouldn't sit right with me, either. Gross generalizations are gross no matter who they're about.

Yeah, I'm all for feminsim in real life, but then it started popping up in the comic to the extent that it did/the way that it did, and I had to stop reading, because honestly? It felt too over the top to me, and too false. Especially in sinfest.

You know that's how it fucking feels sometimes right? I didn't know what looks like a young girl is not allowed to be upset because a bunch of dude that she thought were on her side really weren't?

That's your opinion and you're welcome to it. But for those of you getting upset over this, the context for that strip it actually really important.

The younger girl there, Xanthe, had been recently attacked by a bunch of guys and almost trapped in literal hell. A few strips before, one of the main male guys, Slick, had been trying to take steps towards supporting feminism (half-assed as they were), but when she was attacked she saw him standing in the crowd doing nothing.

Now, Sinfest has had a fairly long-running subplot that Slick has a 'devil half' that comes out when he's asleep and causes havoc, which was the person she saw then. But she didn't know, which led to her disillusionment, as seen in this strip. The author's not trying to say that she's right, just that she's hurt and feeling betrayed, which considering the circumstances, is perfectly understandable.

While I realize people can change over time, Sinfest has never been that great at actually addressing real social issues. It feels like some kind of bizarre romanticized caricature that hits on something very real, but at the same time time manages to make the whole thing feel cheap.

I mean, it's nice that he cares and wants to portray this kind of thing, but I wish he'd take a different approach.

I get that the artist was really kinda sleazy in his earliest strips, and that he wants to make amends for that. Just, he's gone from one extreme to the other in trying to do so. At the very least he needs to throw in some other stories amongst the atoner-strips stuff. The strip always used to hit a variety of subjects, which was its main strength, but banging on the same drum constantly is just boring. I'd be saying that if he was just doing nothing but sleazy porn comics too.

I'm surprised that the feminist gang aren't in it as much as I remembered them being when I went back to read the past few months worth of strips, thanks to this secret.

Hell, I'm a fairly radical feminist and I'm beyond sick to death of this storyline. It's like, I get that he really is trying to make up for some of his past issues with misogyny/racism/etc., and I really do think his heart is in the right place, but I also think he's just plain doing it wrong and mansplaining in the process. Also the storyline has been so unfunny that I'm seriously debating whether or not Criminey, Fuchsia, Tangerine and Li'l E are worth sticking around for.

I've always had a love/hate relationship with this strip. Sometimes the strips are awesome and other times I can't even bother to care.
