21: HELL YES!

11 and 12

I am really hoping that 11 and 12 were inspired be a conversation with two friends. They were talking about Phoenix Wright and relationships therein, and they suddenly decided they both needed to make secrets. And that's why the secrets live right next to each other.

11 and 12

Oh, please! So pairing main guy with main girl is shallow, yet pairing main guy with other main guy isn't? (Never mind the fact that it all depends on the kind of chemistry us, the viewers, interpret on their respective dynamics) Double standards have never reeked as much as these two posts.

Re: 11 and 12

[identity profile] cftf.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
If that were the only reason for pairing Phoenix and Edgeworth together, sure. That would definitely be equally as shallow, only from a yaoi fangirl/boy stance instead of a heteronormative "THESE TWO ARE TOGETHER YAY" stance.

But that ISN'T the only reason for pairing Phoenix and Edgeworth--the game reinforces that the two have a tremendously intense, passonate, and dynamic bond between them. The game goes out of its way to define Phoenix and Maya as family, and it's by far one of my favorite relationships in the game (with Edgeworth and Franziska's equally-as-adorable sibling love right up there). No such definition is made with Phoenix and Edgeworth (and in fact, if you've played the third game, it sort of... almost defines it the other way around >_>)

So no, they aren't hypocritical or double standards at all.

So shut your face. :D

Firstly, last time I checked, relationships aren't set in stone. Second, not everyone can see the so-called "romantic" subtext between Phoenix and Edgeworth. Regardless, the point isn't about the validity of these pairings, it's the whole 'OMG PAIRING MAIN GUY WITH MAIN GIRL IS SHALLOWZ OMGZZZ!!!' as if Phoenix/Maya shippers can't like it due to, you know, their dynamics.

So, NO U.

You mean the dynamics that firmly establish them as family?

Have you played the third game (out of curiousity)?

Re: 11 and 12

(Anonymous) 2007-09-21 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This is getting off-tangent from what I was simply trying to call out, but okay, treating each other like a family doesn't really invalidate peoples' reasons for shipping those two, especially considering how "family" can mean so much for different people, it does not just fall on the brother/sister category, so to speak, in fact I've seen other people interpret their relationship like how an eccentric married couple acts (not that I see it that way, just letting you know how other people have interpreted it).

And yes, I have played the third game.

I don't think it IS getting off-tangent. The 11 OP wasn't saying that all main guy+main girl pairings are like that, s/he was saying that Phoenix and Maya were like that, which does directly come down to the validity of the pairing itself. Since the third game establishes them firmly as two people who love each other to death--in virtually completely platonic bonds--while going out of its way to deny them as a romantic couple... 11 is saying that it's hard for him/her to see anybody shipping the two of them together as doing it out of anything but the aforementioned heteronormative main guy/main girl OTP. Since the game really does affirm there's NOTHING there.

Whereas the game doesn't make that same effort to go out of its way and deny anything between Phoenix and Edgeworth (see: the "secret" when you fail to break the last part of Iris' first Psyche-Lock, also Edgeworth's reaction to presenting Iris' Hood).

So no, it really ISN'T hypocritical at all.

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree here, because I believe relationships aren't set in stone; in fact, their strong friendship is a good foundation for something more. All I'm really saying is that fans that do like the pairing doesn't just fall in the "heteronormative mainguy/maingirl OTP", but more so for the pairing's amusing and endearing dynamics, at least for the fans I have come across with. Overgeneralizing isn't the way to go about it, thankyouverymuch.

Hmm. Well, it's true that family can mean different kinds of things and often includes couples. But personally, seeing as how in the third game [minor spoilers, highlight to read] I think in Phoenix and Maya's case it's pretty clear exactly what that connotes.

Re: 11 and 12

(Anonymous) 2007-09-21 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Please don't misunderstand. I'm not suggesting that the inherent idea of main guy + main girl strikes me as "shallow" all the time. It depends on the series, the characters, and the relationships in question. I, personally, enjoy plenty of main guy + main girl pairings when that's the kind of chemistry and tension that's presented.

For Phoenix and Maya specifically, however, it simply baffles me. If those two aren't an example of an incredible, amazing, platonic bond between a guy and a girl, I'm not quite sure what is.

I know you didn't mean every main guy+main girl pairings, but when you go so far as to overgeneralize (that is, people only like this pairing due to their shallow and heteronormative stance rather than due to their endearing and amusing dynamics), then yes, it does come off as hypocritical to me.

For the record, I don't ship Phoenix/Maya, but I can definitely see the appeal for fans of the pairing; I've always thought that their friendship would be a good stepping stone for further developments in their relationship (romantic or not).

5. So much word.

39. We're not all like that. It's just that the laid-back ones who are willing to live and let live aren't shouting it everywhere or trying to convert people; it would be contrary to the very nature of our philosophy. And yes, we're sadly outnumbered, but still, we are here.

7. What's wrong with a healthy balance of crack and pairings? It's like a meal. A main course without pudding is stodgy and not very satisfying, but you can't have pudding all the time! Right?

35. I was so into LJ Smith when I was about fifteen, and I still enjoy it very much. Forbidden Game is my favourite, but I'm still waiting with my fingers crossed for Strange Fate, even though it's probably not happening.

39. You don't have to be active in fandom to enjoy a role-play. I happily hide in a corner from mine. Though if you're playing with fandom active people, it gets difficult.

1. Are you insane? Most of the best fics are about villains! Antagonists are usually the most interesting characters in any work. See Severus Snape. See Miranda Priestly. See Paradise Lost!

9. I cried for Novvy too. Like, hardcore cried. Like when I cried when Jin in Xenosaga died. ... Stupid female emotions. But I do agree for your secret. If I hear Jac fanspazz at me one more time, I'm cunt punting her.

12. I LOVE THAT COMIC AND I DON'T KNOW WHY.

33. I've done that.
