I'd like to find whatever area of fandom you're frequenting where hating the reboot is not only allowed but actively encouraged. Because from what I've seen you're not considered a TRUE FAN if you dislike the reboot.

Fandom Secrets has had a lot of that in the last few weeks tho.

Everyone in my fannish circle is pretty polite about it, but many of them hate the reboot and see it as a travesty. When I click on friends of friends is when I start getting into the TRUE FANS can't like the reboot mess, so I quit clicking that shit cause it made me sad. LOL

Yes, by and large the Star Trek fandom is very welcoming. Only a few "newbies" are that idiotic.

I've been in the fandom since the beginning- yes, 1966 and all that- and we do welcome everyone. Those "true fans" are few. Sorry you ran into them.

That's what it seems to me; there are various parts of fandom extending far past tumblr, and most of it seems pretty accepting to me.

I enjoy the new Star Trek movies and consider myself a fan. You will never get my to watch TOS.

I'd honestly suggest watching certain key episodes just because they have legitimate historical significance if you're into sci fi. I consider myself a Trekkie but I haven't watched every single one.

The thing about Star Trek fandom is that it's the group of people who really created fandom as we know it. The first Kirk/Spock zines came out in the 1970s; these were a hell of a lot more difficult to publish than uploading a file to a big fanfic site. Star Trek conventions predated the internet. Many Trekkies are old enough to be grandparents, and run the spectrum of ages.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you're dealing with a fandom that is much older than tumblr, with fans three times the age of whatever petulant teenagers you might be dealing with there. It's huge and pretty diverse. I'm not saying there aren't Trekkies with issues, but you can't really talk about the "fandom" in the same cohesive way you can with newer franchises.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you're dealing with a fandom that is much older than tumblr, with fans three times the age of whatever petulant teenagers you might be dealing with there.

Most of the fans who go on about how the 2009 movie 'invalidated' Trek, or 'completely misunderstands what Trek is about', and how the people who like it are uncultured clods are the ones who've been fans of Star Trek since the 60s and 70s.

Pretending that it's a 'Tumblr' or 'petulant teenager' thing is just completely ignoring the bulk of the complainers.

Well I'm not in the fandom at all, but I've seen most episodes and all the films. I would doubt someone was a massive Star Trek fan if they'd only seen the reboot films. It's not hard to get hold of any of the old films or series. To be honest I think TOS is worth seeing and is still fun, but the other three series have dated really quickly.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The other four series; Enterprise may not have been awesome, but it still exists.

TNG may be a bit dated (especially early TNG), but it's still fun (and not nearly as dated as TOS, let's be honest), but I think DS9 and Voyager have held up pretty well so far.

Maybe I've just been lucky but I've never seen any of this 'true fan' stuff. (Don't get me wrong, I'm sure those people exist. But they're probably louder than the more chill fans, and fewer in numbers than you think.) Most people just seem happy that the series is still pulling in new fans. Is it a perfect fandom? Of course not. But a perfect fandom doesn't really exist either.

Anyway, you don't have to watch all of something to be a true fan. You don't have to be a master of obscure fandom related trivia or anything either, and if anyone acts like you do...well, fuck 'em.

When you have a franchise as huge as Star Trek it takes a lot of time (and possibly effort and money, depending on how difficult it is for you to find the episodes; then there are books, comics, games, etc...) to experience everything. Most people aren't going to look down on you for not being a completionist. Watch what you want, because that's the whole point of fandom in the first place; to have fun.

Maybe you're hanging out in the wrong parts of fandom?

[Picture is a screen-capture of a tumblr post.

The first comment says: "Can I still be considered a part of the Star Trek fandom even though I've only seen the new movies?I'm guessing not, but I'd still really love to be one of you guys (Especially considering I was 9 when the last movie (before the 2009 one) came out. So hopefully I can be forgiven for that.)"

There is a reply with a picture from the original series, but I can't make out what the subtitles say.

There is a reply to that, that says "the star trek fandom might be the nicest so far wow"

And then a final reply: "good job star trek fandom you keep truckin on"

The post is tagged with the tags: star trek fandom, star trek, fandom, awww, its nice to see that at least over on tumblr people don't care, wasn't exactly easy when the 09 movie came out initially, trust me there was a whole your not a true fan phase initially, but not here

Text from the secret:

Are we talking about the same fandom here? That "true fan" stuff is still around. Worse because, "Oh you just came in due to Cumberbatch. I liked it before then." They still want you to watch everything and get on you if you're not interested. Then there is still the ship wars and misogyny. This fandom isn't nice and is full of elitists.

Secret because: I should be nice and welcoming but being in this fandom has made me bitter.

Have you been to TrekBBS at all? It's where a lot of old timers hang out, and you'll seldom find such a diverse bunch of regulars. No combination of loving/hating versions is unrepresented.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems like most people here are saying "It ain't like that." Well, I've never been part of that fandom so I don't know. But I have been in an older fandom or two, as a younger fan, and yes, some people can be quite unwelcoming. It's more a feeling of "Go away little shit" than anything out in the open, but it's there sometimes. Frankly I resist entering older fandoms now, even if I'm interested in the shows/fics. I just don't want to deal with elitists who are SO cool with having invented the fandom and the world and life as we know it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I've experienced this, too, but not with Star Trek. Doctor Who prior to 2005 was like this for me. Star Trek was huge and very accessible for most of the time Who was off the air, so if anyone in Trek fandom gave you crap for being new, it was easy to find someone else to play with.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
That's funny because I've seen that with younger fan groups of established fandoms towards the ones who have been fans from the beginning.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think that the main problem of "you're not a true fan" of Star Trek if you like the reboot has to do with the plot holes/distinct lack of philosophical or social justice issues tackled in it. Most of Star Trek's appeal to many is the utopian idea of society and the way they think through issues. The new Star Trek just wants to entertain people, which irks some who got into it for the thought provoking aspect.

I'm sorry you've had a negative experience though.

My experience with the Star Trek fandom has been very positive. IMO, all large fandoms have both wretched hives and awesome playgrounds, and your experience in those fandoms depends on which circles you fell into early on.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still puzzled why people think what happened in the original series has any relevance to the new movies. Did they miss that it's a completely different timeline? And I love that. Familiar things happening in different ways. Or just new things if you don't know the old ones.

And I loved the reversal of things in the new movie.

At least it's acknowledge as different. Unlike the hatchet job done on so many other things that claimed to be part of the original timeline.

Didn't Trek fandom once be a place to celebrate diversity?

The thing is, I actually watched Cumberbatch fans flood the fandom and they all said they loved the movie, but they really didn't. They loved Cumberbatch. Every discussion and fic and fanart was about Benedict Cumberbatch. That's not a Star Trek fan. It's possible to be a Cumberbatch fan AND a Trekkie, but those people were already in the fandom before he was even cast. The ones that came after are mostly batshit crazy and flip out if people post about anything other than ST:ITD and Cumberbatch. The fandom became unbearable for a while, but it's thankfully died down a lot. Based on what I've seen in some other fandoms, it will probably pick up again a bit when the DVD comes out and then die back down again quickly. I just wish Sherlock was back on the air so the die-hards would move along already.

I don't often wish that words or phrases should never be uttered again, but "true fan" is an exception. If you are a fan, you are a fan. (The exception being fair weather fans, but that doesn't really apply here).
