So, about a month ago my car was shaking really badly and the check engine light was on. The couple people I talked to (random friends that know about cars) said it sounded like the spark plugs needed to be replaced, so I called the place my family uses. They were really busy and weren't going to be able to get me in for awhile, and I was worried about the shaking, so I wanted to get it in somewhere sooner. I went on Yelp and found a place that had all 5 star reviews that talked about how awesome they were. I dropped it off there that afternoon, and things seemed fine. The people there seemed friendly enough, it ended up being the spark plugs and coil (?), which they replaced. They charged a little more than my usual place had quoted me, but it was fixed, so I didn't really care.

Or so I thought. Today I went for an oil change, and on the way home the car started shaking horribly again, and the check engine light started flashing. I thought something went wrong with the oil change, so I went back and had them look at it. They hooked it up to a diagnostic machine and were able to tell that the issue was from the coil that had just been replaced, and suggested going back to the place that did it.

I went back, explained the situation to them, and they called me this afternoon. The guy I talked to explained that the coil they'd used was defective and would need to be replaced. He said the brand they used the first time around wasn't very good and was often defective, and he recommended using a different brand, that cost $20 more. So the charge on that will be $60, he said. I was kind of dumbfounded and said I'd call him back. Called my parents to see what they thought of it (I didn't think it sounded right but don't have much car maintenance experience so I wasn't sure). They both said that they shouldn't charge me anymore than the $20 for the better brand of coil, because they were fixing their mistake, and to call them back and tell the guy that.

I called back and asked why it would be $60 if the coil was only $20. He said that it was $40 to "diagnose what the problem was". I said there wouldn't be a problem TO diagnose if they hadn't used a defective part to begin with, and he said in a really rude voice "well, do you expect us to do it for free?". I should've said "yes, I do" but again, I was a little shocked, so I said I'd have to call him back. Called my parents back again, and they both agreed that it was bullshit, but to call them back and tell them to go ahead and do it because I still need my car back regardless, so I did.

Now I don't know what to do. The more I think about it, the angrier I get. I didn't have an issue with paying the $20 for the better brand, but now I don't think it's even fair that I should have to pay that. I mean, the guy flat out admitted to me that they used a brand that was often defective. They knew that, and used it anyway. But ok, I'll pay the $20 for the part, whatever. But $45 (at first it was $40, then changed to $45 "with tax") for them to figure out what the problem was?! It was THEIR FUCKING FAULT THERE WAS A PROBLEM TO BEGIN WITH BECAUSE THEY KNOWINGLY USED A SUBPAR PART!

It's supposed to be done by lunch time tomorrow and my dad is taking me to pick it up. My mom is the kind of person who won't hesitate to complain if something's wrong, and I know if she were there I'd probably get the whole thing for free, but she's going to be out of town, and my dad and I are both awful at confrontations like that and although I want to tell them what I think, I know once I'm there I'll be too afraid/intimidated to.

So now I just don't know what to do. My mom says to just pay it and be done with them, and that it's not worth $65 to deal with all this, but it pisses me off. It's not fucking right.

A friend I told about it said to go the Better Business Bureau, this guy with the local news who does investigative reports on unethical businesses, Yelp, Facebook, etc., and let everyone know what happened. I think the local news thing is going a bit far and I'm not big on social media - I don't have a Yelp or Facebook account, I rarely use Twitter, and I'm not sure that going around bashing this place all over the internet would really accomplish anything anyway. But at the same time, in this day and age when everything's going viral, some pissed off part of me thinks "yeah, let's put this out there and see what happens".

And then there's the fact that they have my address and I'm afraid if I do anything negative towards them at all, even voicing my opinion tomorrow and telling them what I think, that they'll retaliate towards me somehow. Which everyone agrees is incredibly paranoid and crazy of me to even worry about, but still.

Ok, just now looked, and the Better Business Bureau's site has them with an A+ rating and zero complaints. What the hell.

Anyway, so I don't know. I guess this is just partly a vent, but...what do you guys think? Any advice for how to handle this situation?

Today I've been diagnosed with high blood pressure, which I'll have to take medication for indefinitely. This might or might not be cause by sleep apnea, which in turn might or might not be caused by me being overweight.

I've been heavy all my life, and mostly managed to dodge all side effects up till now. I always knew this could happen (especially since my mom also has high blood pressure), but I'm still pretty shook up about it. Especially since for the last few months I've actually been trying - and mostly failing - to lose weight. Apparently now that I'm in my 30's weight loss is even harder than it used to be. I'm also in a really shitty place in my life now, and I've always been an emotional eater.

I wish I had some grand plan now, but really this might just be it. This might just be the start of me taking meds for the rest of my life. *sigh*. I just needed to vent.

Has anyone here seen it? It's a BBC series about zombies. I don't normally like zombie shows, but I thought this one was interesting because it takes place after a cure is found and the zombies are being reintegrated into society. The main character is a boy who originally died when he committed suicide (after his boyfriend died in war) who has to try to fit back in with his family even though his parents are in denial over everything that happened and his sister was on a special task force that eliminated zombies before the cure was created. I hear that it also might be getting a second series, so I'm interested in where they'll take the show.

Leg cramps from HELL

Oh my god, you guys. Today at work, I got the worst cramps I have ever experienced in my life. They started on the toes of my right foot -- you know how it, when they just want to curl up and smoosh together and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. The the cramp traveled up to the rest of my foot.

And then I could feel my other toes start to go -- and that's a horrible thing, KNOWING that you're in for some big time pain and that there's nothing you can do to stop it. And then more upward motion started. Before anything started to get better, I swear, I was cramped up from toes to thighs, and it took about 10 minutes to feel relatively normal again.

Only, I didn't realize it at the time because I was so focused on my legs, but all that tension doesn't stay there. It's hard work being in crampy muscle-spasmy pain, and I'm really feeling it in my right shoulder/side of the neck.

And it's probably all my fault, too, becaues I haven't been drinking as much water as I should nor eating much by way of fruits and vegetables this month, so I'm sure I'm pretty damn low on potassium and other essential vitamins. I should take a multivitamin, but have you seen them for adults? THEY'RE ENORMOUS.

Does anyone have any advice for finding work? I'm at a complete loss at this point.

I live in the middle of nowhere in the countryside, so there are next to no jobs available. Almost everyone works on farms or family-run businesses, which are never hiring. There's a slightly bigger town about 20 minutes away by car that has a Walmart and some smaller businesses, but I've applied everywhere already and haven't gotten so much as a call back. Anywhere further than this town would cost more money in gas to get to/from than I'd actually be making on minimum wage. I have no experience and no references, and I'm starting to think that I'm not even being considered now because I have a BA and I'm "over-qualified." Before I got it I actually managed to get an interview once, but since then I've had no luck at all. My BA is one of those "useless" ones like History or Architecture, so looking for something that actually has something to do with it is right out. The only things I found were unpaid internships in the most expensive city in the state. :\

I don't know what to do. My student loan bills are going to start coming in any week now and I have to start saving up to move out.

Tagging Question

So I'm writing a series of fics, they're AU, and in the last one one of the major characters dies. Now the other fics build up to this, and I don't want to spoil it in the summary of this last fic or the tags, but I don't want anyone to be triggered or to read it expecting a lighthearted fic (well just by the subject matter it won't be expected to be lighthearted, but not expecting the death) at a time when they really don't want to read a story where the major character dies. It is a canon where canonically most of the characters do die, but the AU is something completely different. Would it be acceptable to put the character death warning in an author's note at the end of the story, and have a link at the beginning to the author's note at the end?
