I don't hate any of them, but I don't love any of them either. I have various levels of disinterest to dislike for each of them. For whatever that is worth to you, OP.

I probably like all of them in some way, but I don't think I love any of them by any means. There are far more likeable characters in the series.

This probably doesn't count, though, OP?

For what it's worth, I agree with you about Hagrid and Dobby. Especially Hagrid. I liked him in the earlier books, but as time went on, his incompetence with everything ever began to get to me.

Honestly, I've never been a big fan of Hagrid's either. When there was the big hullabaloo over who was going to die in books five and six, I kept hoping it was him.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really just curious if you like Harry, OP. Not that it matters, you can like who you like.

I think Dobby and Hagrid are boring too. I didn't cry with Dobby died and I wouldn't have been sad if Hagrid had died.

Snape is an asshole, but he's somewhat interesting.

Dumbledore is something of an asshole too, but I find him to be a really interesting character.

My unpopular Harry Potter opinion is that I REALLY don't like Sirius Black and I didn't care when he died.

I'm with you that Snape's a fandom darling, but I don't know, Dumbledore, Dobby and Hagrid all get a lot of hate. I personally like them a characters, but with Snape and Dumbledore, not for the usual reasons (in sort, I LIKE that they're so effed up), and I think Hagrid's okay, though he's not one of my favorites.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I find Dumbledore being an asshole interesting, not entertaining? Is that the same thing?
I am rarely interested in HP anymore, but I think morally grey or tragically flawed interpretations of Dumbledore, that explore the creepy parts of the wizarding world, are really compelling.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh on Dumbledore, Hagrid, Dobby.

I liked Snape, but really burned out on the fandom craze over him.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
There are people who like Dobby? Huh. Color me surprised.

At first I confused the picture of Dumbledore with Gandalf and I was like THEM'S FIGHTIN' WORDS, but then I realized who it was, and yeah, I wasn't particularly impressed by any of them, and I could never figure out where the line between "hero" and "bastard" was drawn for Snape and Dumbledore. Dobby's death did make me sad, but only because it seemed so utterly pointless. I liked Hagrid's pets.

I don't hate Snape but I'm not a fan by any stretch. It's just really hard for me to muster up too much sympathy for him since I think it was entirely his fault that he lost Lily's friendship. I also think that he really wouldn't have cared terribly much if Voldermort went after the Longbottoms instead. Then he spent years being a complete asshole to innocent adolescents. Wow, that was a rant I hadn't anticipated. Dumbledore I find interesting because of his questionable behavior and I have an affection for him, I admit.
Hagrid and Dobby...I was sad when Dobby died, I still get teary but it didn't trouble me too much. If Hagrid died, I wouldn't have been too broken up, either.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Not in the HP fandom but from what my friends told me Dobby has always been kind of despised?
Never met anyone who hated all four, though. Especially Snape has such a huge fan following, I found it impossible to find someone who really hated him.

I thought Hedwig the Owl's death was much more tragic than Dobby's. In fact, that may have been the only death in the series that genuinely bothered me.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Severe dislike for Dobby, highly irritated with Dumbledore and Snape, but totes cool with Hagrid. In the end, like/dislike who you're going to like/dislike and if anyone gives you trouble, ignore them.

...now I feel weird for saying I still like all of those characters to one degree or another.

But then, I was never really immersed in HP fandom, haven't read a lot of meta, etc. I've basically just read the books, seen the movies, and read the occasional bad!fic.

Hardly an unpopular opinion. I think the ones that would cause surprise are: Lupin, Hermione, Neville, Fred&George.

Dumbledore's the only one of the list I actively enjoy. I don't... dislike Hagrid and Dobby, but I don't... like them. And I LOATHE Snape. And Snape apologists.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-15 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you on Dumbledore and Snape.

Snape was an obsessive man. His idea of love was more of...well, creepiness. I didn't find it to be a tragic love as in he lost the love of his life, but he only fell in love with her and never loved anyone else. His life was a tragedy, but when fans are all "oooh" over the "Always" line, I just feel weird. I had a guy who was obsessively interested in me and I was never so relieved than when he moved away and couldn't obsess over me.

As for Dumbledore - he clearly had racist/classist (what's the term for prejudice against Muggles? Are wizards a race?) ideas what with what he wanted to do with the Deathly Hallows. And then he fell in love with Grindelwald, the Wizard Hitler and yeah, Grindelwald might have been a manipulative sociopath, but Dumbledore was a smart guy who must have formed his own opinions as well. Then Dumbledore has Harry stay with the Dursleys for the blood protection, rather than casting a spell and being the Secret Keeper of Harry's location or something, so every year until he was eleven and then every summer, Harry had an abusive home. Then Dumbledore allows all this crazy stuff to happen at Hogwarts where kids nearly get killed every year and yet he rarely acts concerned. The students had to fight his battles. I mean, yeah, the more I think about Dumbledore, the more I don't like him.

No, none of the characters were perfect, but when you look at some of the stuff Dumbledore did, he wasn't the saint everyone seemed to think he was.

But I like Hagrid and love Dobby.

[Picture is Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, Dobby and Severus Snape from the film adaptations of the Harry Potter books.Albus is a pale-skinned man with long white hair, beard and mustache; Hagrid is a man with pale skin, frizzy kind of long brown hair, beard and mustache and wearing rough fabrics for his clothes; Dobby is a House Elf, a small humanoid creature with a human face, big triangular ears, huge eyes, big nose and wrinkly flesh-pink skin. He is wearing rags; Severus Snape is a man with lightly-tanned pale skin and dark hair that reaches his shoulders. He is wearing dark clothes.]

I hate all of them. I think Snape and Dumbledore are assholes (and not in an entertaining way) and Hagrid and Dobby are two-dimensional, annoying and unfunny.

Secret because: Fandom darlings, never heard of anyone who didn't love at least one of them.

I fucking hate Hagrid. He frustrates me so much. He's so INCOMPETENT, it enraged me.

I never liked Dobby but I was sad when he died, which surprised me.

I find Dumbledore and Snape very interesting but I wouldn't say they were my favourite characters or anything.
