(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)I mean, more entertaining maybe, but definitely not more faithful, or of better quality. at least as a general rule.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)Like anon above mentioned Samurai Pizza cats, and I did like that dub tons and thought it was funny, but I also can't compare it to the original because I've never seen it?
Wackier shows can work with rewrites, and if it's already been done then what's done is done, but I usually as a rule hate severe changes in animes.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)I unironically love the dub so much.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)though admittedly it's also getting tiring only hearing the same like five voices on everything ever. pseudo-feminine guy voiced by liam o'brien? YOU DON'T SAY. and idk it's not like the original audio's much better in that sense. the effects of the dark age of megumi hayashibara and takehito koyasu are still being felt to this day.
but anything's better than some of the english dubbing we had to endure in the early days of anime importing. tenchi, slayers, ranma...all just fucking atrocious.

I hate most dubs and prefer subtitles because 1) Many times the English voices sound horrible and 2) a lot of little details about anime gets lost in translation. There are certain things in Japanese that English doesn't really do (for example, how characters refer to each other) so when it's translated it just doesn't sound right.
But then I love dubs like Shin Chan and Digimon. I enjoy the rewrites that make Shin Chan hilarious and Digimon also funny, and for the other dubs I like them because I don't know the dubs for older anime were better? Some but not all.
Po Boogie-Woogie!
(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)Never watched it in English.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)(Equally, if the joke/pun/idiom is handled straight and the audience gets nothing out of it, one could argue this is also losing in translation, because it simply doesn't translate.)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)Subtitles can be horribly translated too, but if you watch enough anime and/or decide to learn a little japanese on your own you can very often still pick up on an accurate translation.
The major trend is I am still getting a more accurate story from subs then I am from dubs. This isn't a judgement on dubs at all, it's just what I've noted from watching a number of dubs and subs over the years.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)There are very few exceptions to the rule (Cowboy Bebop has a good dub, though I wouldn't watch it, and the dub for Akira wasn't bad, when that was all I had), but all in all dubs were getting better 10 years ago, but if you reach farther back into the "Japanimation" days, they suck pretty hardcore.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 12:35 am (UTC)(link)Am I into Hetalia? Nope.
Was the voice acting stupendous? Oh HELL no. It pretty much reminded me why I hate dubs.
Was the content staggeringly accurate to the original? Nope, and that's why I loved it.
Hetalia's dub is RACIST AS FUCK, but every single country gets a potshot taken at them, and some of the jokes are so so horrible (as in, OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU SAID THAT--like Germany getting a Christmas present and expressing disappointment that, "I hope it's not another Jew...") you just can't tear yourself away from it. It's like three trainwrecks at once with a semi crashing into them from both sides of the tracks.
Everyone needs to go watch. I can't believe it's a thing that actually exists.

Some dubs are awful, even if they are nostalgic (I'm looking at you Sailor Moon). Others change the dialogue because there isn't a lot of context for some Japanese jokes, especially when they are rooted in culture or mythology. I'd rather they change it than read a block of text to explain it, and I lived in Japan, so I speak it well enough to have a good foundation. Plus, it's not like this isn't a universal translation thing. The purpose of translation isn't to be 100% literal, but to get the feeling and the meaning across to your audience. I learned this when I tried to watch Shrek 3 in a Japanese movie theater. I have no idea what those subs were trying to relay, because they were wrong. I ended up having to explain the comedy to my Japanese friends. Do you know how hard it is to simplify the story and the meaning of the Muffin Man?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 06:55 am (UTC)(link)Though, to be fair, those are a lot older than Digimon and Shin Chan, so, eh.
I love dubs but I am tired of Stephen Blum and Cam Clarke and man everyone in every California/Vancouver dub. I'm starting to get super tired of Funimation voices too. I know VAing is like some kind of super secret BFF club thing but damn, get a bigger voice pool, it won't kill you.
But, seriously, lol at the "I get more nuances~~~~~~" argument for subs. How do you get any sort of nuance unless you know Japanese? And if you know Japanese, why the fuck are you watching subtitles? So you have something to bitch about?
Seriously, whining about how dubs suck so you prefer subs but wah wah subs are translated and therefore inaccurate is so shooting yourself in the foot. If the dubs are terrible but the subs are terrible too, short of sitting your ass in a Japanese class for a few years, how the shit are you gonna watch your shows?
