I am surprised no one thought this was a bad idea.

Here's a future note to studio executives who are trying to turn the latest "it" YA book into the next Twilight, Harry Potter or The Hunger Games. You need the adults for a market. If a book is only huge with the kids but the adults have largely ignored the series, it will not do well as a movie. Twilight, Harry Potter and The Hunger Games have an equally as large of a fan base amongst adults as it does the 19 and younger set. And it's the adults who have the larger disposable income and are willing to shell out the money for a ticket while the younger set will just torrent the movie.

The writer of this series just makes me feel sad for actual talented fanfic writers. And if they're also nice people, I feel even sadder.

The world is not fair.

As I've never read any of her work, I do want to see the movie, just to see it, but given her history, I do not plan to do so in any way that helps her or her backers profit.

I read the first three books (at the time no more existed) long before I knew of any controversy. Not my favorite books but I enjoyed them and I'll probably end up seeing the movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do the middle three look weirdly like Harry, Hermione and Ron?

Putting aside the whole author thing for a second, I have to say that it was just a bad movie all around. I haven't read the books but I found Clary utterly useless and the entire thing kind of 'meh'. It felt less like it was made for everyone (the director didn't seem to realize that not everything translates well from book to screen) and more like it was made solely for fans of the book so people like me, who haven't read the books, just kind of left shaking the heads and feeling like they wasted their time/money.

[Picture is a promotional image featuring the cast of the movie adaptation of the book/book series "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones". It features two young women and three men standing all serious in a line, looking at the viewer and wearing the sorts of casual clothes young people wear, kind of on the dark side. They all have light skin, the women both have long dark hair, one of the men has medium-length blond hair, and the other two have short dark hair. One of them is wearing eyeglasses.]

It makes me so annoyed when I see someone likes this series, especially when they have otherwise good taste. And then there's the whole Cassie Clare scandal. I hope this movie bombs at the box office.

I get why people got mad at Cassandra Clare to begin with, but at this point I suspect most people -- however they rationalize it -- are just hating her because everyone else is, not because they'd hate anyone who plagiarized, profited from plagiarism, and was generally bitchy and a BigNameDramaFactory ten years ago or whatever it was.

If it's any consolation OP, I heard a few reviews today that all said it's just dull and boring. I wasn't that interested in it anyhow, but they really put me off.

(Disclaimer: never read anything from this series, or anything else by CC. It's just the wording of the secret...)

If somebody else enjoying something annoys you, maybe you need to rethink your life. Because it sounds like you need more joyful things to distract you from giving a fig about what other people watch and read.

It made me sad to find out Aidan Turner is in this because I knew this movie wouldn't be any good. I tried to read the first book but I just get so irritated at CC's writing style. It just never clicked right with me. I would've been surprised if it had done well.

The only thing about this movie that I personally think is that I hope it doesn't negatively impact on Aidan Turner's career. I may not have seen any of his work outside The Hobbit, but I like Kili, so I wish Aidan a long and successful career.

From above: "It's something everyone can be nasty about while patting themselves on the back about how awesome they are for being nasty."

This is totally true, whether people want to admit it or not. I am FULLY AWARE that there are a million legitimate reasons to hate CC. But people regularly say they lose respect for people for NOT hating her, and also aggressively question how writers who DON'T have her reputation could possibly be friends with her. This is creepily excessive and is not something you can brush off by listing all her internet-wrongs, because it's putting hatred overflow onto the innocent people around her. This is not just hating her, it's putting a big radius around her and judging anyone who steps into it.

Adding to that, this opinion is ridiculously widespread. Someone makes a secret about judging their friends for liking CC, and the comments are all just hating CC. They don't address the content of the secret, it's just an excuse to hate on her again.

The few people who respond to the actual content of the secret, when there are comments to them, are just about CC again. Like people think you don't know enough about CC if you dare to suggest that people shouldn't lose respect for their friends over the media they like.

This secret doesn't need to be a secret, because fandom in general hates CC SO MUCH that apparently it's totally acceptable and not even noteworthy to dismiss your friends' taste if they don't hate her too.

Her time in the flicks is done. If the shitty b.o. for this film alone doesn't do it, the horrible rep she'll receive in the industry from lying about her involvement before and/or after the fact, as well as her general badmouthing a sinking ship, will.
