I have to be in the right headspace to listen to it. I can't be thinking of a bunch of different things at the time. I try to listen to it before bed, but sometimes I forget to listen to it. To me, radio shows need lots of attention and a good imagination to enjoy them.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)Especially since English is not my first language and so it gets really hard to concentrate on it despite not having any problem with focusing on English when I'm watching TV shows with no subtitles.
But I love Welcome To Night Vale, and the fandom, and everything, it's just that I proceed very slowly with it.
I've found a way to get through them though, but I'm not sure if it will work for you. I play minesweeper on my phone. It's something I do almost all the time when I'm bored and so it doesn't take a lot of concentration for me despite the nature of the game, so I'm occupied and therefore I won't end up dozing off as I'm listening to it but not too occupied that I end up getting too invested on the game and not enough on the podcast (like, who the hell can get too invested on a minesweeper game?).

Just a thought.

I'm so disappointed that I can't get into this series. It sounds so cool but the lack of visuals makes me lose interest immediately.

I think the creator said they're likely going to do a book of transcripts at some point, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)For me personally, though, can I just say I don't like audio-only canon? It's hard to keep track of, and I prefer books/tv/movies. As interesting as WtNV sounds, I wish it was in literally any other format.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)It's odd, because I can focus easily on the written word for hours but the fact that Night Vale is audio-based and only has one voice actor means that my attention drifts.
I wonder if some sort of slide show might work, set to the audio. It wouldn't be exact drawings of what was being described, because I feel that that would ruin the mystery, but maybe occult logos and symbols and general weirdness that would fit in with the episode. Unfortunately I don't think my skills would be up to the job, but if any fan does attempt something similar I'd be interested to see if it would work or not.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)I feel like I'm missing out, but I get bored just listening to it doing nothing, zoom out and get distracted if I listen while doing other stuff, and can't hear properly if I listen while I travel.

I'm 57, and still a little too young to be part of the generations who grew up with radio drama. However, I'm a fan of old time radio, and have probably become at least as comfortable with it as my mother and grandmother were. By "comfortable" I mean that I have no difficulty listening to a story unfolding solely aurally, or creating the visuals in my head, or (perhaps more central to the conversations I'm reading here) sitting, or being, still while the story unfolds.
I'm intrigued by the number of posters (many of who I'll guess are much younger than I am, and who grew up without that type of listening habit) who are unfamiliar and less than comfortable with storytelling that lacks visuals or dynamic motion.
Radio didn't last long as a stage for story telling, but for a short time (the 30s, 40s, the early 50s) it was the major stage for popular drama, at least in North America. While it was, the consumers of that sort of story telling were required to exercise different consumption skills than are now common.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 01:07 am (UTC)(link)(Especially because I've been listening to the same 25 episodes of Cabin Pressure for the last year or so - god, it's nice to have something new.)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 02:04 am (UTC)(link)Same as people above, my attention is drifting way too much to catch all the details. Cecil's voice doesn't make this easier as some tones don't register to my ears (borked ear build - I don't hear some spectrums). As for the transcripts - they don't read as a novel or theatre drama, they don't work for me at all. This is crap - Night Vale sounds like my kind of thing (finished 5 episodes).

I don't listen to audiobooks, either, for the same reasons.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 03:46 am (UTC)(link)We're sorry you can't enjoy the awesome. Maybe try looking at some fanart while listening??

Something like this would only truly work if I could go on a long, cross country drive, which won't be happening any time soon. Or out walking for more than 30 minutes (too damn hot around here).
