At the end of the day, reading fanfic isn't really adult-like or mature regardless of what you're reading.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
...why not?

Plenty of us in fandom are adults who like fanfic. As fandom ages there are likely to be more adults reading/writing fanfic than there are minors. Most of dedicated fic readers and writers seems to fall between 18-30 years of age.

Define adult.

Why not? I don't really consider it any different that reading a book.

It's not that different from reading comic books or books in general. It's just something else to read, I feel.

I think it's maturity-neutral, like most hobbies. There are people twice my age who have been interested in fanfiction for as long as I've been alive or longer.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about you, but I always read fic while holding a snifter of brandy and sitting in a leather chair in a library.

I can understand your feeling that because slash is mentally related to 'yaoi fangirls' for alot of people but I think it's pretty childish to lump any one of those genres together as 'What the kids do.'

It's no different than reading anything else and reading one kind of fanfic doesn't make you more mature. There is no one way to "act like an adult" after all. Plenty of us here who read/write fic are adults.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel this way about the porn I've been consuming, honestly

Used to be almost all hard, non-con male/male. Now it's almost all hard, non-con male/female and slash is looking less appealing. I feel like I've "graduated" from projecting on the uke or submissive male, and it shows I'm more comfortable and confident about my feminism as well - I know how to separate my fantasies from what happens in the real world.

Being more open-minded about what you read and willing to explore things outside of the quick satisfaction of what you're used to, I can see as more mature... Moving in between genres of fanfiction doesn't sound like quite the same thing though.
I read other things because reading is important to me and I'd feel like I was missing out if I only read the same boy meets boy story four thousand times in a row.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I would think it's not so much the genre as the type or quality that would make you feel more mature. I honestly can't see how one type of pairing is more mature than the other, but the *way* it's written? Sure.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)

I think somebody saying "I feel more grown up for doing a thing" probably is not really all that grown up.

Some with the under-aged kids proclaiming they're mature enough to handle "adult stuff". As in porn, not responsibilities.

Huh. I read het and gen in my teens/early twenties, and then moved on to mostly slash as I "matured." Guess one of us is retrograde.

right.... that's how it works

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
This would make more sense to me if you felt more adult because you started reading more gen & het because, say, you've broadened your horizons or you previously avoided female character narratives and now you appreciate nuanced female characters. As is, it doesn't read that way.

Feeling the need to make comments like this actually makes you seen less like an adult.

I started out with Gen and Het and then moved to slash. Clearly I must be aging backwards!

I think a lot of young women use slash as a way to expose themselves to sex, without feeling personally threatened by it. Without a woman/female character to "Mary Sue" yourself into you're removed from the situation and can enjoy the sexy fun times from a distance.

A lot of people don't seem to like to talk about the fact that sex can be scary to someone whose never had it. There's so much importance put on it and it seems like this HUGE deal what with all the virginity BS that gets spouted. Also a lot of women and girls have experienced sexual violation at a young age. Slash can be baby steps to ease yourself into it.

As you've matured and gotten capable of understanding sex on a personal level you've gotten into stuff you have an easier time imaging yourself in.

As for gen, it relies entire on story telling and skill. Erotica can be exceptionally well written, but a lot of it is just about the fucking.

TL;DR I get it OP, for some people that's just the path they take as they mature
