Proper grammar is a part of good writing, and it's learnable. Not easy, necessarily, but learnable. If she can't take constructive criticism and learn from it, screw her. (I'm editing for a Swedish writer right now, and his grammar is steadily improving.)

Especially English grammar. It's so much easier than any other language I have any knowledge of. Not even remotely comparable to what learning my mother tongue would be.

All I can think of is this book but I doubt very much that's it.

Speaking as a person who doesn't have English as their native language, I appreciate it when people correct me if I make mistakes (as long as it's done in a nice manner) To be honest, I think it's quite ridiculous that you're not "allowed" to correct other people when they make mistakes, because how else will they learn?

Of course, everyone is different about things like this, and with this person being a BNF, you risk getting jumped on by that person's fans.

This. It's not rude to help people improve their grammar.

As a non-native speaker myself I had rather people point out my mistakes to me, than laugh at me behind my back.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-17 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I always look for ways to improve my grammar (for my native language and for English).

You are right, it's not fair to judge a non-native english speaker. And it's not like they can't improve their english skills with time and practice. Be patient with them, young padawan.

How're they going to improve if nobody corrects them? (I'm not blaming the OP for not correcting them -- I understand how it can be with BNFs and their sometimes rabid minions.)

Man, I'm re-reading my comment and it sounds like I'm being harsh on OP, rather than giving a solution. Imo, if you know they are open to being corrected on their English, then go ahead and do it. Otherwise they are not going to improve.

Well, yes. . .it is unfair to 'judge' a non-English speaker for not being perfect in English language posts. (Do you know their language? Would you be confident posting perfect-grammar posts on a non-English forum?)"grammar" is not something that one person can learn all at once. Would you suggest they stop making posts of any kind in English (which is the language a lot of fandom discussion takes place in) until their grammar is perfect? Are you willing to offer to beta every single thing they post before it goes up if they want you to? (Or take no for an answer if they DON'T want correction?)

If they're posting unbeta'd fic, it might be helpful to suggest they get a beta, or if there's a particular word they are misusing, there are contexts where a correction could be done politely. However, you say they are a BNF, which implies it's not somebody you know well and that they probably have people available to beta for them.

Basically I don't see how is it any of your business or your place to judge. Unfollow and block their user name if it bothers you that much. They're not posting for your benefit and if they're a BNF clearly SOMEBODY appreciates what you're posting.

This depends. If the person writes fic and the bad grammar is affecting the quality of her writing, then it would be appropriate to mention it, in the spirit of helping her get better. I imagine a fic writer would care about improving their grasp of the language being used in said fic.

If this is just about her spoken English in regular conversation and whatnot, then I wouldn't bring it up. Correcting a non-native speaker's grammar is appropriate in a classroom setting. Everywhere else, it's just rude as hell.

So correct the person then,, most of us English as a Second/Third/whatever language folks do know our English is not perfect and we appreciate it when someone corrects us.

The exception is if you are being rude when correcting us, because then you are just being an arse... Especially if you don't speak another language yourself.

I personally don't have any issues with communicating in English online, but it is a bit tiring to do so over time or when I am a bit sleepy or just generally not on the top of my game. So sometimes I make mistakes because I'm not concentrating fully, got distracted and/or talking/thinking in another language and I just mix it up a bit, and don't get me started on expressions...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
How is she going to improve if nobody tells her she's wrong?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're confusing different meanings of judging. It's one thing to be understanding about the difficulties people have with foreign languages but it's another thing entirely to think no one is allowed to correct a work they decided to share publicly. Letting someone believe their foreign language writing is flawless won't do them any good. If you're nice about it and they take badly, it's their problem that they don't care about improving. They should be trying to improve, not just do what they can and have everyone pat them on their back. I worked my ass off learning English and I find this idea that foreign speakers' mistakes are off-limits baffling, condescending and counterproductive.

Do you think you could suggest getting a beta reader to her? I'm ESL and briefly dabbled in fic writing when I was 15/16, and to this day I am grateful for the fantastic beta I had back then because she was hands down my best grammar teacher. (Even if I cringe at myself thinking back on those fics now.)
