Have I missed out on anything?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
So despite thinking i'd go to a big university after high school, I instead ended up in a much smaller, privately run institute, with no dorms or clubs or lecture halls or anything.

Although I absolutely adore it there and I know I made the right choice...I always wonder what university stuff i'm missing out on.

What are some things about university you guys love, or are glad to have experienced? Or what did you hate? Do you think there's anything i'm missing out on?

No lecture halls. How does that even work. Where do teachers teach at.

We have one small (100 seat) lecture hall that doubles as a theatre, but it's mainly workshops, usually in computer labs. It's all very hands-on and project based, as opposed to lectures.

I think they mean no large lecture halls for big classes, just small classrooms.

I am so so glad I didn't stay in the dorms, I don't think I could have stood a roommate or living in such close quarters with 300 other students instead of the 3 housemates I had. I don't think I missed out on anything really.

No dorms or lecture halls, how does that work? Do you all live locally and commute? Is the town just full of student apartments or student housing? And where do you commute to if there are no lecture halls? Where are classes taught?

Dorm life can be kind of fun. If you get along with the people on your floor and your roommate it's basically like living with a bunch of friends, which is fun. However if you don't get along with people it's like living in an awkward kind of hell.

I replied above about the lecture halls ^
It's basically a skyscraper, and the school takes up 6 or so floors of it.

And most people either live locally or rent apartments. Some people live an hour or more away by bus, so it's not ideal, but most are 10 mins walk away

AYRT

Ah, saw the above reply. Makes sense now. I was just imagining like no buildings and you just attending classes in random spaces.

It actually sounds like a really great experience. And while you may be missing out on more traditional college life, traditional college folks are missing out on a lot that you're lucky to experience.

Well Norway among others don't really have dorms we manage...

To clarify we have some student housing through the schoolish, but that barely makes a dent in the living spaces needed... So mostly all of us rent privately.

Re: Have I missed out on anything?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
That's interesting! So when you go away to college/university you have to find an apartment to rent on your own or does the school help you find them? For example, my college had dorms but they also had a list of student friendly apartments you could go through, so if the dorms were full or something the school would still help you out and take some of the stress out of the situation.

Another question, in Norway university is paid for for residents, right? (If I have this information wrong just ignore this question.) So do you get like a living stipend to help pay with your private housing or is it expected that you'll be working along with schooling?

I dunno.

I went to a community college, transferred to a big university and dropped out after one semester, then finished up at the community college, then after a couple of years of wallowing, enrolled at a local university to finish my BA (I could go to campus if I wanted to but my classes are all online).

I dunno. I'm in it for the education more than socializing. I made friends in my classes but I never stayed in touch with them after the class ended.

We probably missed out on a lot of drama and bullshit according to my mom and my cousin.

I like big lecture halls because there's no pressure to interact with anyone. I like small discussion-based classes too but it makes me so anxious and takes so much energy. It's nice to be able to just listen sometimes.

You may have missed out on some fun times in the dorms if you're a social person, but personally I hated it. Luckily the disabilities office got me my own room when having a roommate was driving me crazy, but even then the dorms were stressful.

Re: Have I missed out on anything?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't think I could have coped with dorms either.

Living with other people 24/7 and they're all up in my shit?
Aaagh! D:

I do think I would have liked a little of university social life though, making friends seems easier with clubs and such

I did go to some clubs that I liked, though the one I enjoyed most was one where I knew the person who started it and got an explicit invitation, so I didn't have to feel out of place in the beginning. Clubs can either be a few awkward weeks where you feel like you might enjoy yourself if you ever actually get comfortable with these people until you finally give up, or a fun way to spend some time each week when the people are welcoming and compatible with you.

I loved the big lecture halls myself. Small classrooms sucked.

Having gone first to a big unpersonal university with a great standing* and then moved to a small University College* no one has heard about except the imaginatively named: The Film School which only shares a building with us.

I prefer the small one, our lecturers and professors really care about up and know us, being in student council I know they make changes when we tell them something isn't working and I know everyone to some degree in my class.

I might miss out on some stuff, but really I would rather be where I am hours away from most of my friends, my girlfriend and family over moving to a bigger university.

What I love about my school? I love the buildings and atmosphere I get being there, the fact that everyone in my class is up for discussions and a helping hand in every subject. That I can knock on my professors food and they will talk to me right away as long as they don't have a meeting. I am respected and admired for being intelligent and the staff is fantastic!

Downside being I can't take a double BA in sociology and film and television studies, because they don't offer sociology at my school and they would if I had stayed at NTNU, but as that is something I want to do for fun not for my future career I don't think it is that much of a biggie. Also being a small class you kinda have to hang out with the same people every day... There is probably more but I'm sleepy.

*HiL (Lillehammer University College)

I get what you mean about having a more personal connection in smaller schools. I'm on the student council too, and I know things get fixed when I complain, lol

And yeah, having smaller classes and more time with the teachers is awesome too. I can just go upstairs to my lecturers office whenever I want to ask a question and he's there...and sometimes we've just ended up playing Skyrim, lol

Student council is fun! Well the extra points* and recommendation I get from the head of my department is!

Yeah only difference I think between our teaching methods is we have lecture halls, like 10 of them, but the are not huge and like my class was 90 students the first year (biggest ever 60 this year) we are now down to 30ish because the BA students are with the year students. Anyway what I meant to say was we have half classroom discussions and half lectures in most subject and they split us in two for class discussion.

I'm not sure what you call it in English but our subjects have a point system thing as in we have to have 180 points to get an BA. Subjects range from 7,5 to 20 points and we take at least 30 each semester to be considered full time students. Has nothing to do with grades it is supposed to have to do with the size of the subject and the lower points the fewer lectures.

Also damn typos, my iPad hates me, anyway.

Marching band was my favorite thing about college. I didn't care about the football games we were the backing track for, but I did like the stadium energy. And I ended up bonding with one of my section members who did like football and didn't mind explaining it to me, and we're still friends some ten years later. Aside from that niche interest...no, I can't think of anything I'd feel like I'd missed.

I personally loved it. I get nostalgic and wish I could go back pretty often. I only lived in the dorms for the first two years and then commuted. And I belonged to a frat but it wasn't the stereotypical frat you see in movies. Weirdly, even though I made several good friends I don't really talk to them anymore. I'm much closer to my high school friends.

Re: Have I missed out on anything?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhh, fraternities and sororities, I have never really understood them.
I guess it's a very American thing (I live in New Zealand, raised in England)

From what I can understand they're like elite clubs, right? You need to have certain requirements to get in? I'm probably way off the mark here, haha

Re: Have I missed out on anything?

[personal profile] queerwolf 2013-12-20 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I meant about them not being like you see in the movies. For example, instead of going through regular Rush (where you go to each frat house during a party, talk to the brothers and see if you want to join) I went through informal Rush, which is less stressful. I didn't meet anyone who was snobby.

There are no real requirements to get in. It's all about if you will fit into that specific one personality-wise. You do have to pay dues once you're in though. Also, you have to keep your grades up and most frats/sororities require some sort of philanthropy/community service.

Keep in mind this was my experience only. I'm sure other people have different experiences with the Greek system.

I enjoy being able to say that I had a 500-person class lecture and while my professor was awesome, there were other downsides. It was great to not have to socialize but there were people there always talking in the back where I sat, and I didn't have much choice because there were no left-handed desks in the auditorium seats so I sat at the tables in the back.

You probably should be happy to not have to experience catching a campus or public bus during rush times in between classes either.

I go to a big land-grant university in the midwest. I love the sheer huge amount of cool research being done by my professors, the whole idea of the land-grant mission, the big park-like campus with its bell tower--and the fact that it's all in the midst of a walkable community with a fantastic bus system and friendly people.

Even in the same school or same type of school, two people can have very different experiences, so it's hard to say that going to a different school would have given you certain experiences or that you would have liked them.

I went to a large university and lived in the dorms. My dorm was never particularly social, though. It wasn't one of the big freshman dorms (I wanted to be in one of those to start with, but didn't get in) and the upperclassmen weren't as eager to make new friends as a group of all freshmen might have been. I had to search a bit further afield and put in more effort to find friends, although I did eventually.

Student clubs were something I liked, because those were where I found most of my friends (the other main source was a study abroad program). You can probably get similar experiences through community groups not affiliated with your school, though.
