Yeah, they needed to lighten his eyebrows, the contrast is too distracting.

I saw him described on one messageboard as looking like the bastard lovechild of Lucius Malfoy and Nicholas Cage, and I cannot agree more. He just looks weird. And that way he moves around like a slowed down Jack Sparrow makes him come across as permanently stoned, I guess we have to ask what kind of mushrooms and berries grow in that forest of his?

Is he meant to be beautiful? I mean, separate from how audiences react to him and the fact that Elves are generally considered beautiful, in this part of the story Thranduil is a villain of sorts, so maybe he's only supposed to come across as fey, otherworldly, and mildly unsettling. Which he does to me.

I just think he's Lee Pace who they made look kind of weird. I love Lee Pace so I'm still kind of attracted to him here even though it's not the look I like on him.

Generally, I don't think in the categories of "attractive-unattractive", my perception of people's appearances is more on the spectre of "interesting-uninteresting". This is interesting. I'd enjoy drawing it. Interesting=good.

I do notice if someone is exceptionally pretty by conventional standards, or if someone is exceptionally ugly (physically deformed, has a skin disease or somesuch), and some things tend to disturb me in a "I'm not sure I'm comfortable looking at it" way, but in general, everyone has some sort of aesthetic appeal.

That being said, I am not entirely sure I'm comfortable looking at his eyebrows (and Bloom's, for that matter). They are so Brezhnev-esque. Cannot take seriously.

Not all blondes have light eyebrows

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
But people with that complexion and hair color exist in real life. It's not like all blondes have light body hair.

Storytime: There was this girl in my class growing up that had the blondest of blonde hair, but she had essentially Lee Pace dark eyebrows, dark arm hair, and later a visible dark mustache. People used to give her such shit about it. Taunting her and telling her if she was going to dye her hair at least dye the rest to match. Which is dumb, since she's been like that since pre-K and obvs didn't dye anything. She also had really pale skin so that didn't really help the whole dark body hair thing.

I've always found the contrast of light hair/dark brows to be very attractive, and i rather like heavier brows, so long as they're groomed. I hate spindly, over-plucked brows on anyone.

ETA: Pale blondes with very pale brows and lashes always look kind of 'unfinished' to me, and it's hard to see their lashes/brows, so they often don't seem to have them, which i don't find appealing. So, yeah - his coloring works for me.

I think he's pretty, but only when he's silent. It sounds weird, but his manners just don't match his regal appearance.

A lot of blondes have dark eyebrows naturally. Plus, uh, no they couldn't just make them dark haired not unless they wanted every Tolkien purist calling for their heads?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I always think Lee Pace is pretty...the mismatched hair/eyebrows thing isn't always my fave, natural or unnatural, but in general I prefer dark brows cause they stand out more and to my mind make people look more expressive. (You know how in 'Spirit' there was a pre-production debate about 'should we make the horse talk or should we just give him eyebrows?'...that kinda deal.)

mostly I find Thranduil attractive 'cause he's just...odd. Very old, very insular, probably done more than his share of magic mushrooms in his time, a bit majestic and a bit petty, makes no bones about looming over his enemies, and knows how to be fabulous.

To each his own, I think he's gorgeous, and I absolutely love the way the actor plays the role to the hilt. I think he and Charlize Theron's Ravenna from Snow White and the Huntsman should get together and be stunning and chew scenery in ridiculous outfits all the live long day.

I think Lee Pace is adorable, but Thranduil is gorgeous. I really like the light hair/dark eyebrow contrast, and just the way he moves is really fascinating and weird and beautiful.

I actually found the eyebrows on him a lot less distracting than whatever was going on with Legolas's face. I don't know if it's just me but there was something weird about it. I know he has been "de-aged" but it wasn't even that. I think the huge pads on the shoulder armour just made his head look a bit squashed. Also I know in LOTRs Orlando Bloom had to wear contacts but was the blue CGI this time? It looked really off putting.

Not that it ruined my enjoyment or anything, just something I noticed.
