I'm a little confused. I can understand, if not agree, with the OP's arguments about Joan and Moriarty but I don't get how this is homophobic.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I think this is the same OP as the similar secret about Sherlock from a couple days ago, and egregious overuse of the word "homophobic" and an almost absurd willing to dismiss things as "homophobic trash" is just their thing, man. It's just their bag.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's homophobic because Sherlock/whoever isn't canon, don'tcha know? /s

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
You can make the argument that it's homophobic if you reason that the reason they made the Watson and Moriarty characters female was so that they could have Holmes/Moriarty and Watson/Mycroft relationships without having homosexual relationships.

Maybe they made Watson female so they could do these kinds of plots without it being gay, maybe not. I don't really care since we got a pretty awesome female character out of it. It's not like the other Holmes adaptations have any gay relationships, so I'm a little tired of people singling out this one when it's doing other things well.

It's just funny how some fans are talking like gay relationships are canon in most of the Sherlock adaptations, especially in the latest BBC version. I love it when us fans become delusional like this.

Hi! You must be really fun on the Supernatural board.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Is this a repeat, or has the whining about the hookup just reached critical mass and become inescapable?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
You're never going to get any sympathy here, secret maker. Most of these peeps worship show runners and hardly ever think anything is homophobic.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe if OP would make an argument.

Or really, any understanding of the meaning of homophobia more nuanced than "Those dudes are't bangin' so obviously homophobia"

Secret 8 - Elementary (TV series) (warning for SPOILERS)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-04 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
warning for spoilers for TV series Elementary

[Picture is Dr. Joan Watson, as portrayed by Lucy Liu, and Mycroft Holmes, as portrayed by Rhys Ifans. They are having a sort of tense dinner with Sherlock, who is off-screen.]

I am extremely disappointed in this plot-line.

I felt a little uncomfortable with Sherlock/Moriarty but it was only one bothersome thing so I convinced myself it wasn't so bad, but this Joan/Mycroft bullshit has made it clear they've made Watson and Moriarty women so they can do a bunch of stupid soap opera love entanglements without any ~icky homo~.

Even if they keep their word and never make Holmes/Watson canon, Elementary has still become a homophobic piece of trash. And I'm really really disappointed because I thought Joan was a great character and that she/the show had so much potential.

I'll watch the rest of the season in the hopes it gets better or at least doesn't get worse, (and to find out what sneaky business Mycroft's up to) but I've fallen out of love with it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hey secret maker:

What did you think of Sherlock tongue ravishing Molly whilst not even connecting with Moriarty in 3.1? Isn't the UK supposed to be down with the gay or something?

The only way this would be homophobic would be if Sherlock/Moriarty and Watson/Mycroft were canon pairings in the original source material and they made Moriarty and Watson women to avoid having to deal with m/m pairings. That's not the case, so this sounds like your issue with women, and not the writers' issue with homophobia.

Changing the gender of a heterosexual character ≠ homophobia.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
(Irene was always a woman, they just changed Moriarty’s identity.)

Neither does putting a heterosexual character into a relationship with a person of the opposite sex.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, like, at all of these comments.

Now, I wouldn't call it "homophobic" like OP. But I'm gay, and yes, I do find it disheartening that now that some of the characters are women, it's "okay" to put them in relationships with other characters. Yes, I know all too well that probably no modern show would have the balls to make the characters gay, but it's still kind of sad to me that this is the only acceptable form.

Yes, I do think it's cool that some characters were genderswapped. We need all the good female representation on TV as we can get. But we have far less gay representation, and I think it's sad that the commenters here are reducing this issue to "LOL SLASH FANS CRY MOAR." I suppose you're all straight and don't really give a shit.

(again, I don't think it's homophobic that female!watson is in a relationship with.. whoever, I don't watch the show. but it's an example among a million of examples that gay people don't get to be represented, and that if Watson had been a man - the same person, same character - this show would not have included a sexual relationship.)

Do I think it's heterosexist? Probably. The pairings are par for the course for major network television and heterosexuality for the main characters is considered to be a default. Did they do it just to spite Sherlock Holmes shippers? I doubt it. So I'm not going to use a term like "homophobia" here.

I don't get it. If Watson were a man, there would be romantic plots involving him with women. Instead, she's a woman, and has romantic plots with men. How is one of these more homophobic than the other?
