well of course you don't feel welcome; Steam, being fundamentally a storefront, is a monument to capitalism.

I have nothing to add except: ugh, Steam, may a pox be ever on their houses.

Why?

I realized after I submitted this that I didn't completely cut my username out. I decided I didn't care--this is my secret from the Steam forumites, not my secret from you guys.

The Steam forum is a cesspool pretty much full of those types of people though. Best thing to do is just ignore the fact it exists and enjoy your games, who gives a shit if you don't have a top notch rig.

i think steam is really great and super convenient but i steer clear of the forums. i've asked a few questions myself and was met with kindness but i definitely believe you. i think that's less an issues with the steam community and more an issue with nerdy ass gamer dudes wanting to find something to be on top of in life so they might as well be Supreme Geek Snob. most of the people i'm friends with on steam are pretty poor, we all wait for steam sales. granted our computers are decent but money being tight doesn't seem to be a rarity in my experience, so you aren't alone and i don't see why people who shell out a lot of cash to spruce up their specs would put you down for not having that same luxury.

in the future - and maybe this is obvious - i'd suggest googling any issues you have, as most of them were probably discussed somewhere. it'll save you the trouble of waiting for an answer and potentially dealing with assholes. if you don't yield any good or helpful results then maybe asking on a different forum would be beneficial.

Welcome to every gamer forum. The other ones aren't much better, they're just less derisive (because think about it: what kind of people can't find a better community than STEAM FORUMS? Kids and the socially broken).

Honestly, I suggest going to game fandom sites--that is, a forum full of people who really like the game. You're more likely to find people who have to play on low settings.

I use Steam like I use YouTube: browse around for stuff I'm interested in and pretend no one else is on the site. XD
Sorry you ran into some snobby gamers though. My laptop isn't the most powerful either.

Ignoring the trolls and Steam-haters for a minute:

I'm surprised you hadn't figured out already that the Steam forums are a fucking waste of bandwidth. Well, I guess you know now, and knowing's half the battle.

I'm pretty good at scrounging up games that are shitbox-friendly, and I know I'm not alone -- why not ask here?

Those forums are pretty much your typical gamer forum, only with more-ish moderation. If I have to look up tech solutions, I skim as fast as I can or else I'll initiate a serious loop of groans and eyerolls.

As someone who plays games on their super-aging laptop, I already feel left out of most conversation about recent games. Not that I tend to buy PC/console games as soon as they're released anyways, much less several times a year. Ah well.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-31 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Try the GOG forums. Things are a bit different at a place where the name of the game is getting old games to even run on semi modern computers. I've always found most of them really nice no matter how shitty or shiny your build was.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-31 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
My computer also isn't the best for gaming but I still use it for that, and most of the time I have no problem (because, like most gamers, I always check that I meet the tech requirements before buying). But occasionally I have run into problems and have noticed that, by and large, people are total assholes about it. The first response always seems to be that the poster is a moron who didn't bother to check out what they needed to have before buying the game, and that they threw there money away - so why not get a better rig. Etc. So when I have a problem I check the forum first, to see if any of the douchebags in question have given any helpful advice to some other poor unsuspecting soul. In that way I've managed to find some good tips to manage when my computer will play a game, but doesn't seem to do it well. I don't think I'd ever actually ask about it on those forums, though, because I sure don't want that attitude directed at me.

However, if you play a game that you really love and it hasn't made much of an impact in the gaming world, you can sometimes find really lovely conversation and support of it in the Steam discussion hubs. So I do visit the forums fairly often to talk about some of the indie releases I've bought off the program and have really enjoyed.

I just won't ever turn there for tech help, because I think that the enthusiasm of gaming gets totally crushed under the enthusiasm of superiority when it comes to that aspect of games. It's a different, uglier mentality and I think those types only hover in places where they're likely to get to condescend to others.

I actually have a Steam account, but it's only so i can play Age of Empires. (Love love love!!) I've never gone on the forums.

How lame of people to mock you for basically not having disposable income. Feh.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-31 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Most gaming forums are shit. That's just a fact. They're full of basement dwelling trolls and neckbeards who have their fedoras on way too tight. You can usually find what you need though, if you wade through all the crap. The Steam forums are no different, Especially when you get a bunch of super nerds together who measure the size of their e-penis by the specs on their gaming rig. It's better to try and get involved in gaming communities for specific games than to dive into general forums.

But I have a beef with Steam anyway. I'll continue to play the games I've already bought from them, but I sure as hell am not going to give them anymore of my money.

I hate this about the PC gaming community, in general.

"What do you MEAN you 'can't' shell out $600 for a better computer? That's so cheap!"

I have a fucking roof to keep over my head.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-31 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
And yet if you look at the stats they publish every month, most Steam gamers do have relatively modest system specs. I suppose the users who talk on technical forum threads are more likely to have an above-average rig, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-31 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think of my comp as bad (I can play assassin's creed 1-3 - dunno about 4 bc I got it for my ps3 for xmas - and bioshock infinite, dishonored, skyrim, and other fairly recent games). I always check if my computer can play it first because I don't have a lot of free money for this kind of thing. But a couple weeks ago I got a check from my aunt for a graduation gift and I bought Far Cry 3 (which the Steam site said I met the requirements) but every time I try to play it I can only get about 10 minutes in before it starts getting messed up, with the sound and video getting off from each other and the input from my controller not going in until a few seconds later. It's so frustrating and I spent money on this game but I can't play it normally.

But still I don't really know how to ask about it on the Steam forums because I've seen all that same things you have and I think they're kind of mean about everything there. And no, I can't get a new computer! I can make ends meet and treat myself every now and then on this computer I already have (a gift from my parents btw) but it is really upsetting that I spent money I could have used for a other things on this game and I can hardly play it because the site lied and said I could use it. And I have the nvidia geforce thing which says I don't have the minimum optimal settings, but I don't care about optimal settings, the minimum REQUIRED settings should be enough to play in normal time, even if you don't care about it being the most pretty pristine looking thing ever.

I'm going to disagree with the crowd here: you don't need the 'best' hardware to game, but neither can you expect to play recent releases on old hardware. The amount of people who have complained to me because their crappy Facebook-and-iTunes laptops wouldn't play the Sims 3... Why not do a bit of research before you shell out for a game, make sure your system can run it and you graphics card is supported, hm?

I hate that I can only buy my country's localised version of some games but that's not Steam's fault.

But I'm always very amused at those little kids (at least they read like kids) on the forums of Alpha/early Beta releases who whine about saves getting wiped even though they can read the warnings for that every time they start up the game.
