I've seen this guy get attacked for misogyny before, and I can kinda see where those people are coming from.

But reading the books recently, I found that I dislike the female characters a lot less than I do those in other series.

Basically, I usually loathe female characters, but in this series, I took them on their own merits/shortcomings instead of that kneejerk 'arg, female, do not want'.

AYRT

Thank you.

(To OP: I don't like to jump on the "YOU HAVE INTERNALIZED MISOGYNY" bandwagon, but...)

Is your problem with female characters that they are often not as well-developed as male characters or is it something else?

I love lots of female characters in ASOIAF: Sansa, Arya, Dany, Brienne, Margaery...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of disturbed that you generally just hate any character that's female.

Why? And what are you reading?
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2014-02-12 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure they are saying they hate all female characters, but rather that this genre has a tendency to create far more one/two dimensional females that lack substance, which this person immediately hates in a character, and thus, the female being written as one.

This. My favorite ASOIAF characters are all women, but someone hating all other female characters bugs me.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I've never liked reading female characters either. Just doesn't interest me much. I think I got turned off at a young age when every single female character, in the end, turned out to be beautiful even if they were introduced as plain. Since I'm not the most attractive nut on the tree I suppose I just couldn't identify and I always felt betrayed somehow that only pretty people can have adventures. Since I'm not a guy, I don't care much about how they look I suppose and can enjoy them for themselves.

Too late now to change my ways.

That's because despite the hate that Martin gets online, he's actually really good a writing people in general (women included) and writing them like real human beings with both flaws and strengths.

Anyway, glad you're enjoying the series.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Misogynistic? Why? Because Westeros is a patriarchy? All of GRRMs characters are vivid and real, the women no less than the men. They move along the plot, some wield considerable power, and they aren't routinely reduced to one-note sex objects, wives or mothers. If anything, I find his work progressive.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
If progressive = rapey.

Most of my favorite characters from the books are female.

But there are some kind of squicky stuff in the books in terms of how rape is treated.

The show though... the show has issues up the wazoo.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I hate GRRM's female characters. I also hate his male characters. I didn't find them realistic at all, they all seemed like caricatures of horribleness to me. Kind of like his storytelling.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. Also, the OP sounds like a misogynist.

Op, even with weak-written female characters, you really can't find anything good about them? So much that you have a knee-jerk reaction to them? You're a fucking misogynist.

His characters are a hell of a lot more realistic than the rest of the fantasy genre.

ASOIAF has some very awesome female characters. The books/TV series are also pretty misogynistic at points.

So basically I consider it a wash, as far as feminism is concerned.
Edited 2014-02-12 04:36 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
GRRM's sort of misogynistic in that too many female characters (none of the main ones, mind you) seem to get raped every other page and that it's the default form of assault women in GOT face, while it's only a threat to about 3 male characters in total. He also has a creepy fixation on Dany's body. However, he also writes very fleshed out, interesting female characters with their own strengths, weaknesses, and motivations, so it's sort of a conundrum.

The show is full misogynist and exploitative shit though. Fuck it.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Get out of my head anon.

I feel like his female characters often have primary motivations revolving around male characters though. The only exception I can think of off the top of my head though is Arya. Of course, she was WAY below the "fucking" age when she was introduced, so I have a feeling that's the only reason she was spared that bullshit.

I'm also drunk, so I could be misremembering things.
