Because I hate tumblr research (that being you read something on a tumblr reblog and assume it is fact)

The one point for Legolas being in the movie is that he would have been in Mirkwood at the time. Even the youngest age estimates for him put him over 500 years old, and this is only 87 years prior to LotR.

I still hate what they did to him, turning him into a total asshole. Why couldn't he have been the voice of reason that they turned Tauriel into?

Been writing a post-movie Frozen fic starring Anna and Hans. Anna is visiting her cousin Rapunzel when a sudden blizzard strikes a nearby kingdom. As it is summer, Anna suspects something magical is up and gallops off to find out. Not posting it until at least Act One is done, because I always tend to peter out around 10k and I don't want this to become yet another public WIP. (Everything is currently first draft. Aggggh...)

---

The two cousins continued chatting for a good remaining portion of the evening, inviting new people over and waving hello to others as the ebb and flow of the crowd saw fit. Anna excused herself at one point to grab some chocolate cake that'd been rolled out, bumped into her aunt who was as regal and soft-spoken as always, and promptly got swept up into their - now usual - conversation about how she was looking more and more like her mother.

"Honestly, I think Elsa looks more like her than I ever did, but thank-"

"Ahem!"

The two women turned to see a rather nervous and harried looking servant clutching a small strip of paper.

"Yes?" the Queen of Corona asked.

"May I speak to your majesty? Alone please?"

The Queen frowned.

"Anna, dear," she said, placing one of her hands lightly under her niece's. "Hopefully this should only take a second. Would you mind waiting here?"

"Umm, not at all."

The two swept out through a side door Anna hadn't even noticed until then. She was still standing there, holding her uneaten piece of cake, when Rapunzel pushed her way through the crowd again with Eugene now in tow.

"What happened? I saw mother just leave."

"I'm not sure; a servant interrupted us. I think he was holding some kind of message. It must've been extremely urgent."

"You're probably right," Rapunzel said, her tone optimistic but her face creasing with worry. "For her to leave like that though… it can't be a good message."

There was a period of tense silence.

"Uh… hi by the way," Eugene said, with a little wave to Anna.

"Oh, yes! Hi."

With nothing else coming to mind, the three fell into silence once more.

Finally, the Queen re-emerged, her face markedly paler than it'd been just a few minutes ago.

"Mother!" Rapunzel cried. "What-"

"Not right now," she said with a smile and one eye locked on the sea of guests. "It will cause a scene."

Rapunzel's eyes were wide, but she slowly nodded. Then the Queen turned to Anna.

"You on the other hand. Peter, the man you just saw, is waiting in the room beyond that door. I need you to go and hear him out."

"Anna?"

"Me?"

"Yes, you'll understand as soon as you hear it. We'll be back as soon as our absence can go unnoticed."

With a sweep of her arm, she scooped Rapunzel into her arms and herded her away. Eugene followed with a sympathetic shrug.

Anna was alone once more.

With her cake.

Feeling as though she was about to need the energy boost, she gobbled down as much as she could in one go. Placing the rest on a table full of similarly half-eaten dishes, Anna took a deep breath and walked through the door.

Yay! *fist-bump*

Yeah, yeah, we're all supposed to hate her now. I'm not giving into that.

Also, like it or not, some people can wear extra weight and look great. Others just can't do that. I don't get the idea that Jennifer Lawrence is some kind of plus sized goddess because she doesn't look plump to me (but she is a goddess!) And Christian Bale did not look (that) good in American Hustle. He wasn't supposed to look good (but he's kinda ugliness resistant.) If they wanted him to look and play an attractive and chubby man, he could totally do that (because he's hot.) Christian is a shapeshifter (but he can never be completely unattractive. Go see the Machinists and you'll understand.)

As someone who has a case of "comes between a ship" about her... I still don't hate her for it, I simply don't read Tauriel/Kíli, unless it's a friendship fic.

But then I am a very laid-back person and I mostly avoid arguments and ship-wars. Ship and let ship.

I can't make a judgement on it, since I never watched Lost. All I can say is that I liked Tauriel more than I liked Legolas.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's a movie about a giant killer lizard. Don't get your undies in a bunch.

Godzilla movies are popular all over the world and the vast majority are full of Japanese people. One version full of Hollywood white folks (that hopefully doesn't suck like the last one) won't destroy the fragile Asian psyche.

Well, first of all, if you believe me to be singling out writers, it's because I'm responding to a thread about writers, and because I am one of them. I write fiction and I'm working toward getting published, and I very much hope to earn money for my writing. Nowhere did I say that writers should work for free.

What I said is that pay should not be the sole motivation for a writer to write. And I don't believe that most of the fiction in a bookstore was written solely for pay. That doesn't mean the money wasn't a factor. That doesn't mean money isn't important. But think about all your favorite authors and if you can, ask them which of their works they're most proud of.

This was a thread about seeking motivation to write. I believe the most essential reason any person should write fiction is because they have a story they want to tell. It doesn't have to be the only factor, and I'm sure it isn't. If a writer is lucky enough to be paid for their writing, all the more reason to do it. Money determines a lot of things. But if you're a writer, the fundamental question of whether you write or not should not be one of them.

Re: Great Scenes from the Pilots of your favorite shows

[personal profile] rubbertea 2014-03-05 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Person of Interest: The pilot was amazing in every way but the greatest scene is the one where the two main characters meet for the first time, under the Brooklyn bridge by the river. It's beautifully shot, very mysterious (makes you wonder 'who the hell is this guy and how does he know everything?') and sets the mood for the entire show. Also, it has memorable quotes.

'You don't know anything about me.'
'I know exactly everything about you, Mr Reese.'

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be bothered less if there were variety. Like, in the same show, there should be some characters who dress conservatively and practically because their personality and/or lifestyle makes it so, and then other characters who dress revealingly for the same reason. You know, like in real life, where people are different and do things for reasons. Shows where every female character is fanservicey for no apparent reason and against all logic piss me off.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
People in fandom have the tendency to lash out at other people sometimes because of their own insecurities. It's not "glorifying obesity" to just want it acknowledged that fat people exist and have varied personalities.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to see a character more like you OP.

DA--a couple of caveats on valerian. One, it tastes terrible. Two, like all herbal medicines, just because it is a plant does not mean it's safe to take without medical supervision, especially if you take other medications. If you want to give it a go, talk to your doctor first. Also avoid taking it with alcohol. Good luck getting a good night's rest.

I think the right/left issue is around the other way here - I think it's influenced by the way traffic goes, and Australia is a lefthand drive (that is, cars drive on the lefthand side of the road) country.

Well I know that when I was a kid I wasn't exactly what you'd call fashionable, but that was the 90s so... Anyway, I think generally children here are dressed in more muted and darker colours than American children.

Ah, I've seen this video! It's funny, although I don't see what the big deal is about 'ananas'. It's the word for 'pineapple' in almost every language except English.

No our flag is never confused with Russia's, or with any other country's as far as I know. It's quite recognisable, I think.

Aussie here - we're the same!

The only difference is my driveway - I live in a block of over 30 townhouses, and the button to open the gate has to be driver-accessible, which means people drive on the right-hand side to reach it. It can be irritating for resident drivers when someone comes in that doesn't understand that. (I don't drive, and Mum doesn't anymore either.)

Is it her acting you have problems with? I can't imagine it's her personality, from most interviews I've seen Evangeline seems a perfectly lovely girl. I've only seen her in Lost, The Hurt Locker and The Hobbit, and while I disliked Kate I'm certain it was the writing that made it so. Her role in THL was too small to judge, and I quite liked her in The Hobbit.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Same. There are some things I really want to see in writing and can't seem to find. People who take free requests never seem to deliver the quality I need either. I'm willing to pay for it, writers, take all my money.

Eee! Airblades! I love those! The nearest of the big shopping centres (big enough to have two supermarkets, two department stores, a food court and a cinema) to me has installed them in their last refurbishment of the bathrooms. I love them! They're the best hand dryers I've seen. If a bathroom doesn't have those, I'd rather just wipe my hands on my trousers if paper towels aren't available.

Especially in fanfic. Why can't they just say "[Character] swore"?
