Really popular non-canon ships who you see as just really good friends

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Can be either het or slash/femslash! Not those times when you're lukewarm about or dislike a relationship that other people are crazy about, but the times where you interpret the strength of the relationship as being platonic.

Yugi/Yami Yugi comes to mind.

I don't mind Puzzleshipping, but prefer to see their relationship as a very deep platonic bond.

Most, to be honest.

Unless there's heavy implications, I usually assume relationships to be platonic.

Ichigo/Rukia

Hell, Kubo himself even said it iirc.

Mulder/Scully eventually becomes canon but that's still how I feel about it, especially before it becomes canon. There's just something so interesting about their relationship as a platonic relationship to me. I think they're already the most important people in each others' lives, well before they hook up, and the hooking up is secondary to the strength of their relationship. And it'd be really interesting to see a scenario where both of them are in relationships with someone else, because I think they would still have that incredible bond.

Sorry for disobeying your rules, OP!

There are actually a lot of these for me, but limiting myself to just a couple...

Gibbs/Tony from NCIS
Tony/Steve from MCU (I see it in the comics, not in the movieverse; I'm much more Tony/Bruce in that 'verse)

Scott/Stiles. Not super popular but they're becoming more popular. I've never been able to ship them romantically. They're best friends who have called each other brother and I just can't.

A lot of really overtly touchy-feely male/male friendships are like this for me, because I love seeing guy friends be touchy-feely without having anything romantic about it AND without any homophobic macho anxiety issues so much that I feel reluctant to ship them.

Pretty much every fanon ship. Every one. Heck, I might even ship it and still think they're better as friends.

Magneto and Xavier.

I totally get who people ship them, and hell even the actors who play them ship them, but I just don't.

Not currently popular but very prevalent among fans of Road to El Dorado would be Tulio/Miguel. I can technically see the gay, but I'm not feeling it you guys. And I hate how people bash Chel and say she broke up a romantic relationship, because that's somehow worse than breaking a friendship.

EVERY DAMN ONE except Sam and Jack I will go down with that ship. Every other one, I'm like "dammit get ur romance outta my broship!"

Harry Potter - James/Sirius. (Well, Remus/Sirius is more popular, but that one I can kind of wrap my head around.) I do think they had something beyond a normal friendship - James was, for all intents and purposes, Sirius's "significant other" to the point where Sirius kind of wants Harry to be James 2.0. I love how strong their bond was even though it wasn't romantic.

Starsky and Hutch.

Not because I think there's any reason not to ship them*, just that I love their relationship even more when I interpret it as platonic.

*except when people have them get together before the episode "Death in a Different Place" because, no. I can't imagine Starsky having such a hard time dealing with the revelation that one of his oldest friends was gay if he'd been secretly banging Hutch all this time.

- Mrs. Hughes/Carson from Downton Abbey (I don't know if it's super popular, but it definitely has some backing. I prefer them as friends, though).
- Joan/Sherlock in Elementary
- Reiner/Bertholdt and Jean/Marco from SNK
- Makoto/Haru from Free! (Rin/Haru just gave me much more romantic vibes).
- Lelouch/C.C. from Code Geass (This is one pairing where I'll read smut for it occasionally, but I can't really see either of them as being that romantic).

Jeeves/Wooster

Miles Edgeworth/Phoenix Wright (or at the least only one-sided and unrequited)

Cesare Borgia/Micheletto (again, unrequited)

Sherlock/John

Howard Moon/Vince Noir

James Potter/Sirius Black

Harry/Hermione

Eren/Armin

Legolas/Aragorn

Pippin/Merry

Liz Lemon/Jack Donaghy

Sansan from GoT

Aang/Katara (WTF, that one's canon? I just googled it and did not know that, nope friends only still in my head)

Kirk/Spock (in all incarnations)

I have trouble seeing most of the most popular non-canon ships of all fandoms as anything more than friendship. I'll read shippy fic, but I don't see them like that.

For some baffling reason my brain is fine with many rarepairs, which are usually the even less likely hookups. Perhaps because they have fewer canon moments so I can imagine away?

Already mentioned - Harry and Hermione.

Frodo and Sam. I actually did ship them romantically when I was younger and shipped anyone that moved, but now I just love them as platonic soulmates.

Mako and Raleigh. Because interpreting drifting as being inherently romantic is kind of, uh, worrying considering most are family.

Annie and Kat. Aside from the fact that their friendship is (and, actually, Annie and Renard's, and Annie and Ysengrin's friendships) just too damn adorable, Paz/Kat is amazing.

The Doctor and... most of his companions.

Blanking on others right now, but I'm sure there's more! Although, admittedly, some of my ships I also absolutely LOVE as platonic - I can see Link and Zelda from Skyward Sword, for instance, both romantically and platonically. It's totally canon in my mind that they love each other, it can just be different forms of love.
