Re: Breaking up help :(

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait until after, for sure. As for tips, just try to say everything at once, and as honestly as you can, without dithering. When I say "honest" I mean don't try to beat around the bush or twist things or come up with random insincere excuses, but that doesn't mean reciting a litany of every reason you have for breaking up.

I do too. Eowyn is badass.

Re: Interesting Secret Thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Me neither, anon. I have this a-gender friend who says "great, reject all labels!" but truth is, I'd really like to know just who (and what) I am.

An idea... maybe.

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-04-05 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I have an idea that I think might be maybe fun, but don't want to suggest it because either it's a shit idea, or because the fact that I'm the one to suggest it means I'll then have the responsibility to organize it. I do not care for responsibility.

But whatever. Hypothetically, how would you folks feel about a FS book club?

Someone suggests a book on X day, we all get a copy (Libgen is a paradise for book thieves if you lack the funds), and read it and a week / two weeks / four weeks whatever later we post up a discussion thread about the book?

Tell me to go bugger off if you think it's a shitty idea, but I think it might maybe be fun?

Star Trek TNG

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Known canon: CPT Picard and Dr Crusher love each other romantically

Canon or fanon?:
They met when she married his best friend?
He was in love with her before her husband died?
His friendship with her husband is a huge factor in not acting on his feelings?

Favourite body parts

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
that you wish got more attention in fic.

I love collarbones. I find pretty collarbones absolutely sexy, but there's rarely much mention of them in porn fic.

Re: Interesting Secret Thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I go with female just because that's the body I have, but I've never felt wholly comfortable with that. I would have preferred to been born male but I also don't really want to transition. Sometimes I have dreams where I'm male and I wake up so fucking sad that it's not true. But then a large percentage of the time I don't give a fuck about gender or even think about it. My clothes are a mix of everything from 'girly' dresses to mens clothes and I'll mix and match or go to either end of the spectrum* depending on mood.

tl;dr Same. I'm a mess when it comes to gender ID.

*used for ease of description, I don't actually think "girls wear dresses, boys wear suits/whatever" is a Gender Rule or that it's a spectrum at all.

I wouldn't participate but go for it.

Hmm...

[personal profile] ansela_jonla 2014-04-05 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
(Yes, it's me again.)

On a longshot, I emailed the local Housing Register team, hoping that they would be more helpful over the internet than they are face to face (where they basically tell me to get knocked up to get a house).

I explained my situation, that I'm living with my parents and brother in a 3-bedroom house that was not designed for four adults, and that I'm not wanted here and my mental and physical health is suffering as a result. I also explained that even though I've been looking for somewhere else to live, most of the one-bedroom private rental properties in the area are either a) for students only, b) priced "based on two-people sharing" meaning I would be paying double the listed rent, or c) don't accept unemployed people as tenants. The few that don't have those issues want a deposit and several months' rent in advance, which I cannot afford.

I got a surprisingly prompt reply from them. I'm too young to get housing benefit to live on my own. I can only get it for shared renting with another person, and only for £250pcm, which wouldn't cover most of the properties I was finding.

I also might be eligible to go on the housing register "with a need for sharing facilities with people you are not planning on moving with." Whatever that means. I think I'll pop in on Monday, armed with a print out of the email, and ask for clarification.

I think you mean immoral?

I think the answer to your question is squick factor.

Re: Questions there's never a good time to ask.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The Old Testament is important but it is less important than the New Testament, because the coming of Jesus represents a new covenant and a new relationship to God that supercedes the Jewish religious law and that is for all people. It's still worth studying and reading - it's a part of the religion, and it contains much virtue and wisdom - but from a theological perspective, it is much less important than the New Testament.

I think the other factor is that, if you're relatively liberal from a doctrinal perspective, the Old Testament is a little more difficult to deal with than the New Testament, because there are some issues that are more visible and difficult to deal with in the Old Testament - there's a lot of things that are not in tune with contemporary moral sensibilities and there are a lot of things that are impossible to take literally and require allegorical interpretation, and so it is much more straightforward to deal primarily with the New Testament. But that's a secondary reason.

i get a weird case of schadenfreude whenever i see people fucking up in this place

Re: Star Trek TNG

Fanon, fanon, fanon. The third was mentioned in canon, but it's not canon that it was a "huge" factor. I think the "huge" canon factor was professionalism.

OP, that isn't weird at all. Actually it's pretty cool and clever! I've always wanted a One Ring (Or Nenya!) but never got around to buying one; I'm glad you're enjoying yours and it gives you some comfort.

I like wearing fandom related clothing or jewelry or accessories. (I have an awesome Hobbit tote bag, and a neat Portal necklace, and some Starfleet pins. They make me happy, too.)

Hands. Also feet, without going all the fetish way.

Shoulders on either gender. Forearms on guys. Calves on girls.

Re: Questions there's never a good time to ask.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a few things that influence it, I think. Some of it is the way it changes or goes against perceived family bonds, a kind of transgression of the familiar structure than makes people uneasy. Some of it is the association with genetic weakening and diseases from inbreeding, though that's complicated depending on the era and how good the understanding of genetics is, but the prevalence of certain diseases in families with high levels of incest is usually noted as a factor. The combination of fears for genetic integrity or the health of any offspring, plus the transgressive nature of a relationship that might damage family bonds, come together I think to make incest taboo.

There's also maybe a cultural element. The scandals of the European royal families and their inbreeding around the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th made a big impact on Western views of incest, and it also has an association with certain 'primative' cultures like the ancient Egyptians, so there's a bundle of old and complicated cultural biases involved as well.

Same here. Same same same so much it hurts, except that it really doesn't hurt so much because I'm not "unhappy" being female, I just would also be totally pleased if I woke up male one day.

Most of the stuff I've seen based on this interpretation seems to be humour, and mainly black humour at that. Nobody seems to have lost sight of the fact that they're the villains, or at least not in the parts of fandom I frequent.

(I'm also wondering where the woobifying-only-porn-writing Silm fandom is. I mean yes there's porn, but it's not exactly an overpowering amount compared to the meta and meta-turned-fic stuff that's also there. I generally think there's a pretty good mix)
