I haven't seen this so if you don't mind me asking, what is it and why is it offensive?

Yeah, I need deets. This looks juicy.

It's this girl from AGT:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XO-abUhL_Ws

She's a singer who auditioned that has anxiety issues. In the 2nd round she broke down before going on stage and they showed the other female singers offering her support. She went out and knocked it out of the park, so to speak. The judges then gave her a free pass right then and there to the next round which is the live shows. I don't know if she's preformed yet at RCMH though.

not knowing the context, i'm guessing her "backstory" is that.. she has anxiety? and i assume your use of sarcastic quotes means you think she's faking it. you KNOW people have varying types and levels of anxiety and different ways of coping, right?

I hate the policing of what counts as a real problem. I've been reduced to a paranoid shut-in and had to leave school several times because of mine and I still end up worrying that my problem isn't really bad enough to complain about.

My depression comes in 'I'm mildly concerned about issues and self confidence issues' and then it goes into 'black, crushing despair, rocking on the floor in tears and hating myself, my choices in life and not remembering what happy is' and while in public you can't see it, there are a few people that know the extent of it.

There are all sorts of flavors and it ebbs and flows. I've been battling this crap my entire life and it's just gotten to the nasty end again.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know the context either, but I'm guessing it's some kind of reaction to producers of reality tv engineering "storylines" from participants' background/issues. And when those are laid on really thick, they can be quite annoying. So maybe every time this woman's on, OP's getting a big dose of "I OVERCAME MY ANXIETY TO BE HERE" type stuff? Which I can understand disliking, but I'm not sure it's offensive.

Personally, my least favorite are the folksy, small-town personae, all wide-eyed at "city life" (especially if it's something like Big Brother, where they're not even interacting with the city in question).

Not to mention that on a show like this, the people performing on it have nigh to no influence on what gets shown and how it gets cut and presented in the finished show in the end.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
You know, people do get over their anxiety issues. Not everyone, not even most sufferers. But it can happen! This girl isn't a fraud or a phony because she was able to get up on stage and sing to millions. I dare say it was an important step in recovery for someone who wants to be a musician.

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-08-09 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's kinda sad when someone considers RECOVERY from a disorder (or big steps made in defiance of it) is considered "offensive".

Let me tell you a thing. growing up my brother had a fear of heights. he decided that he didn't want his fear to control him and did stuff like skiing and roller coasters. He did all this stuff and got accustomed to situations so he wasn't as scared anymore. Would people consider that "offensive"?

I HATE it when people try to police other people's anxiety

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I have really bad anxiety, but you would never know, because I'm one of the most sociable people I know. Why? Because a huge portion if my anxiety comes from thinking about missed opportunities, and from letting people down. It essentially forces me to be outgoing, because I'm afraid of what I'll lose otherwise. So I go home at the end of the day and worryworryworry about what I've screwed up, but I'd worry more otherwise.

You don't know what this girl's anxiety is like, OP.

Re: I HATE it when people try to police other people's anxiety

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I second this. Some people act as if there's only one way of having anxiety and depression and I find that to be so frustrating. Both my SO and I have anxiety and depression, yet we cope and respond to situations completely differently. They're the type to pace, go over things in their mind, visibly show their panic.

I'm the type to shut down on my panic and fake a really cheery and optimistic pov, that everything's going to be okay even if I don't really believe it when internally I'm screaming at myself not to have a panic attack.

AKA, no one would ever really know I have anxiety and depression unless I told them.

So the mentality that there's only one way of having anxiety and depression and only one "true" way of coping infuriates me. People deal with things differently. It's different for everyone for god's sake.

To OP

If you're reading this, you're probably feeling pretty attacked right now, and I'll grant you that some of these comments aren't particularly charitable. Please just take a moment to realize where some of these people are coming from, though. Anxiety disorders are hard enough to deal with on their own, but the people suffering from them also have to deal with the stigma and stereotyping from people who don't understand what they are.

Maybe it wasn't your intention, but your secret reads like you're adding to that by claiming that there's only one way of having anxiety disorders and that everyone who doesn't is faking. I hope you take this as an opportunity to learn about the wide spectrum of anxiety disorders, especially because they're more common than you'd expect and somebody you love might have one.

I take it from the logo that's AGT and that NBC's doing that irritating backstory thing they foist on us during the Olympics. What a pain. It's not a competition over who has the saddest story or who overcame the most. It's supposed to be a talent show. Well, in theory. Since I'm pretty sure the winners are always singers it's really just another singing show. I swear, if aliens are watching our TV signals they have to be thinking that everyone in America is an aspiring singer. Enough already.

This

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
A dancer won AGT last year, but yeah, sob stories always piss me off.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I find the backstories on these shows to be offensive in general. Not morally (not always morally), but aesthetically. I don't give a shit who these people are or whether they're military or if they had cancer five times. I want to see them perform and then I want to pass judgment like the almighty critic I am. The sob stories, even ones I relate to, actually turn me off to the point that I won't support people who have them.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 03:18 am (UTC)(link)

I don't know -- I find it kind of hilarious on Chopped when the contestants are obviously trying to out-sob-story each other in front of the judges. But then, I am naturally a hell-bound cynic.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I get annoyed because I feel like in a show that is supposed to be competitive it gives an unfair advantage to them. Horrible things happen and I'm sorry that these people had to go through it, but it's not relevant to their talent. And there are people that will throw them a few sympathy votes. If they want to do these side stories, I'd be more interested in things that showcase their personality and who they are now as a person. Since the name of the game is to find someone that appeals to a wide audience, I feel like that would be more relevant than detailing their hardships.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
You need to shut up. You literally NEVER EVER get to be the judge of whether someone else really has anxiety issues or anything else, really. Only THEY know what they feel and how bad it is and how it affects them, not YOU.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, how about not shouting at someone with anxiety issues if you want to be so understanding?

"I have a horrible secret."

"Wait what really? What?"

"I sometimes wear different colored socks."

"Oh, that's not that horrible. I thought you had something really bad, like, you regularly piss the bed, or you're sexually attracted to ants."

"OMG YOU DON'T GET TO TELL ME WHAT IS OR ISN'T A HORRIBLE SECRET HOW DARE YOU YOU DON'T KNOW HOW I FEEL"

Most people commenting seems to not have watched the show, but since I watch it, I understand what you mean. This is a huge accomplishment for her, & she does have talent, but she's competing to have her own show in Vegas, & you can't be running away from it, especially from your own show. I have anxiety myself, though not as bad as her, so I understand it's tough, but she's in a competition-- she needs to have thicker skin if she wants to win, because the judges & audience aren't always going to have patience waiting on her to be okay. Maybe she will have more confidence in the finals & her anxiety won't be as bad. Who knows, but I understand what you mean OP.

& IA with the comment that they use a lot of backstory. It's America's Got Talent, not America's Sobbiest Story.
