Okay, top one has Snape's haircut, which probably means he's with Hermione. But who are the folks on the bottom?

I thought the top was Snape/Lily and the bottom was Snape/Hermione, but I really have no clue.

I think Snape/Ginny, maybe? Or maybe it's supposed to be Ginny/Tom Riddle? I think they're supposed to be Lily and Ginny respectively.

James was more of a hero. But he was also, overall, more of a dick, imo.

I don't understand what distinction you're drawing between those two ships, and I'm personally not a fan of any Snape ships, but whatever floats your boat.

I am curious what you find appealing in the case of the bottom ship, I guess, that's not there in the top one. Like, there has to be something that draws you to it, right?

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
It's hard to say exactly what the big distinction is, but I can put forward some things that I think contribute to my feelings on the matter.

* I see Hermione as a person, because her character was well-elaborated on throughout the series. Because of that, I can easily imagine her in situations outside of canon, and think about how her personality meshes with Snape's in terms that go beyond merely the scripted interactions. Conversely, Lily was never really shown well enough for me to see her as her own person. She's just a building block in some people's back stories, so the only connection between her and Snape I can imagine is what canon gives us, and based on canon alone, I think he absolutely does not deserve her (and was in fact outright rejected by her).

* While I am, admittedly, not especially fond of James, I can't really separate him from Lily in my mind because it would eliminate (or at the least, heavily diminish) Harry, because so much of who Harry is is derived from the fact that he is their child. Hermione and Ron as a couple never particularly engaged my interest, and I don't think their romance was especially necessary for any events, and certainly no character's existence hinges upon their involvement (except the epilogue characters who certainly never got a chance to become important).

* I have always had a kink for "forbidden relationship" kind of romances, and in particular, the teacher/student dynamic. This is especially true in this case, because I find Hermione's headstrong independence and bullheadedness makes it seem a bit less predatory and profane than other types of relationships based on similar premises.

I hope this answers things a bit :)

If the bottom pic is Snape/Hermione, then I can't judge. They were the first HP pairing I ever read and they were my crack for a long time. I devoured everything no matter how crazy out there it was (marriage law fics/snape wears an ugly glamour for ~reasons/Snape forces Hermione into a lifestyle BDSM relationship--just a few examples). I honestly couldn't tell you why, but sometimes things just ping with you. I wouldn't worry about it, OP. (er, as long as you're not judging fans of pairing one, you know?)

Personally I like Snape and I like the Snape/Lily pairing. I think that it set in motion a special sort of barrier that would 'protect' Harry, a special barrier that would not of been in place otherwise. You are probably right, Snape would of set Harry on fire if it hadn't been for Lily's sake but the very fact that he didn't says quite a bit. J.K Rowling knew what she was doing when she wrote in Snape's love for Lily, it was to serve it's purpose.

That he was a jerk, undoubtedly? Did he die in the end, yes.. but Harry did live to fight another day because of him. He didn't get the girl and that in and of itself is it's own character building exercise. Snape didn't get the girl in the end and that's it's own form of punishment for being a jerk, and it's a lesson that no matter what you do.. the reverberations of those actions stay with you long after.

He tried to make amends in his own way.

I have no idea why everyone hates Snape. Seriously.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't been active in this fandom for a few years and it's been a while since I read the books, so did I forget something huge? I mean, did I completely manage to overlook the part where Snape slaughtered a bunch of baby unicorns or something to piss off the fandom this badly? Or is everyone just righteously indignant over the fact that he "violated" Lily's dignity by holding onto his feelings for her or whatever?

I always saw Snape as someone who grew up very bitter over things that happened to him that he never recovered from psychologically. He may not have been a great teacher, he may have gone out of his way to be rude to people he didn't like, and he may have not been the knight in shining armor that people apparently demand from their protagonists, but in what world does that make him an evil person? How does that overshadow the fact that he saved multiple plot-dependent asses on multiple occasions?

Imo being an unpleasant teacher and having an abrasive personality in no way overrides the fact that he did many objectively good things, and I legitimately cannot fathom the backwards logic that could discount what he did because he did it out of love for Lily rather than for Harry. Obviously the action itself means nothing, and the reasoning behind it must be pure and thoroughly unselfish in every way before it can be appreciated.

Rowling created a complex, deeply-flawed protagonist who wasn't sugarcoated with the cliche of overcoming every negative aspect of himself in order to prove that his intentions were good... and y'all still complain because everything has to be a black-and-white issue these days. Someone who does a bad thing is automatically a bad person, full stop.

tl;dr Anon doesn't understand the rabid Snape hate in this fandom and thinks people ruin good literature and good characters by trying to use them as pawns in morality crusades.
