No. Not at all. I found it extremely harsh as well. I'm not going to get all butthurt over it, but my first attempt at cosplay (I KNOW VISUAL KEI IS FASHION AND NOT COSPLAY IT'S AN EXAMPLE STFU) was Made of Epic Fail. It would be better to, you know, send them a little constructive criticism instead of saying they'll never succeed.

There is a small clique in one of my fandoms who operate the same way as the group you're referring to. I'm not a part of them (and man, I'm really happy I'm not), but they can be excessively antagonistic. I worry that those people might turn my lovely small fandom into a wank-fest, which I really, really don't want.

The thing is, you should write whatever the fuck you want. If they react badly, then they're just silly children who can't stand not having their own way. And then you're right, they're not the kind of friends that you want to have.

Do it. I would. It's one of those names that's not permanently tied to the game anyway, so unless you actually TELL people that, they're going to assume you're naming your kid after the bird or, possibly, the actor(s).

Sadly, even Paine falls into a stereotype (I was so disappointed when she turned out to be "damaged" - I wanted her to be snarky and bitchy and cool just because that was her personality), but I see what you're saying. I still love a lot of the FF main girls (Faris, Celes, Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, Yuna...) but there are a number of tropes that kind of repeat with them. It's unfortunate. :/
