Things you can't watch/read/listen to anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Things that used to not bother you in movies or whatever, but now do. For example, you used to not be bothered by gay panic comedy scenes (like Ace Ventura freaking out over kissing a transwoman), but now they bother you a lot.

Gore in movies. Like the Saw/Hostel kind of horror movies. The older I get, the less I can handle it.

I'm super squeamish and could never handle gore. I used to hate science class in school because of those anatomy videos taken inside the human body. I would hide behind my folder and just listen to it without watching. (And I'm glad my teacher was understanding and didn't insist I look at the screen.)

What made it worse was I had this class RIGHT before lunch and then I didn't want to eat because I was so grossed out by the videos. I was actually losing weight from it till I started putting up my folder and took notes according to the narration.

(I still think the absolute WORST video ever was one about digestion where it somehow showed the inside of someone's mouth while they were chewing food. SERIOUSLY?!)

Same. I think horror seems less outlandish and more real maybe as we get older?

I find it a lot harder to tolerate "token" characters anymore. Like when they put in a character to have representation without giving them any actual CHARACTER traits. As though being Asian or being a woman is a personality.

I think it's because we're increasingly getting better and better characters and so my tolerance for the superficial ones has nose-dived.

Re: Things you can't watch/read/listen to anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. Or when the token characters have to come along with some BS stereotypical personality trait, i.e. the token black woman is also sassy. Because African American women do not have any other personality traits. In 2014?* Really?

*I am aware it's 2015 now, but I'm talking about stuff I saw in 2014. So, you know, context.

Semi related by I can't deal with the "White person comes in and saves the poc" trope anymore. It especially seems to happen a lot with asians and I just can't with it.

I guess I should be happy because those types of films HAVE poc but they still end up being huge stereotypes.

Re: Things you can't watch/read/listen to anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-05 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
I actually feel happy just to see minorities present whether they have a personality or not. At least we've been remembered. :p Especially if it is someone from my ethnicity.

Gay panic scenes are definitely up there.

More UK centric, but a lot of old shows have been tainted by the Jimmy Saville scandal and related arrests of other TV and radio personalities. My whole childhood is pretty much gone.

Hollywood films where you can list off what's going to happen to people based on their ethnicity/gender. For example, Avatar (Cameron's Avatar) is a text book example. Everyone not white? Dead by the end of the film. Strong white female character? Has to be saved by white male lead. Natives? Also have to be saved by white male lead.

It's lazy writing, simultaneously boring and horrifying.

Re: Things you can't watch/read/listen to anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely gay panic is on that list. Also jokes about rape or sexual assault. I mean, I don't think there was ever a point where I thought straight-up joking about rape was funny, but I think there were a lot more times when a movie or TV show could play off sexual harassment as humorous and light hearted, or rape as funny if the target was a man, that kind of thing. And that has changed massively for me.

Sexism, such as "hur hur women" jokes or women written just to be damsels. Took it for granted as a kid - now it bothers me much more.

I like Friends a lot, so it doesn't count as "things you can't watch", but when I first started watching the show in 2012ish I was shocked at the gay jokes, and actually almost stopped watching because of that (as well as the fact that the first season just wasn't that great). Fortunately Carol and Susan themselves were written as a legitimately loving couple (possibly the most stable couple on that show, really), so I got over it, but that really really bothered me. It's so strange to think that even in eighteen years, our values have changed so much.

- Dudes peeping on women changing and/or making gross remarks about their bodies (the opposite doesn't bother me, mostly because it rarely happens)
- gay panic as a comedy
- trans characters as jokes
- gore (I never was a fan of torture porn, but even gore in regular films gets me now)

Probably a bunch more I'm not thinking of at the moment.

Car crashes or general mayhem and destruction. This came to light when watching a Michael Bay movie, must have been Transformers.

I mean, (fictional) people died in that crash!

People have already mentioned sexism, so I'll add "abuse is funny if it's female on male" or whatever the trope is. It was standard in 90's comedy, and I just don't find it funny anymore.

Also, Rent. I loved Rent when I was nineteen and all about sticking it to THE MAN, but while I still love the music, the characters come off as super entitled to me.

Disabilities or mental disorders being used for comedy (like a blind person mistaking something for something else, or the whole premise of Monk). That kind of humor usually never made me laugh anyway, but that used to be the extent of my problems with it.

- White Savior films never bothered me before because oh the inspiration! Then I realized how irritating they were. (Although The Freedom Writer's Diary is often used as an example, and while I think it's a legitimate example, I always like to point out the book on which it was based is way more focused on the kids.)

- I loved The Pursuit of Happyness, but learning that IRL the guy was in jail for domestic violence... ugh. I just can't anymore.

Serious TMI

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-01-04 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ill Girls, ever since I got sick. I know writers have to respect their readers' sensibilities, but I feel like reducing illness down to a cute little cough and impending doom leaves out the indignity of so many diseases. I mean, when you're shitting your guts out, and at the same time you're vomiting out a diuretic into the sink, and you're crying because you thought this time you'd be able to keep it down, and all the tears are making your nose run, too . . . There's a reason why, when I tried to write illness, I wrote it as feeling like a giant sack of mixed disgusting fluids.

Nothing, really. The biggest difference now is that I rarely refrain from commenting on the things that are bothering me.

Stereotypical characters.
Cheap emotional/relationship drama.
Characters who are so wrapped up in each other they have no lives of their own.
Scenarios in which everyone's automatically OK with potentially skeevey relationships
The majority of yaoi manga or slash fanfic.

Why yes, these are all related!

I'm alright with noncon in fanfic smut but I won't touch it in published fiction and even less so on visual media. Rather sick of it being in all the media as the "bad thing".

The Venture Brothers. After meeting a certain actor in person, I'm really turned off by it. I hope I'll get over it at some point. The same thing happened with one of my favorite anime series. Luckily I prefer the japanese subs but still it annoys me when rl people ruin my favorite shows. :(
