Are you me, OP?

I've tried so many times to A) play as anything other than female human noble and B) (after failing A) romance Leliana or Zevran, but I can't bring myself to do it at all.

I've never been able to turn down Morrigan's ritual either because I can't stand the thought of Alistair or my Warden dying. (Though I think I would save Alistair if I had to. He's just too precious)

da

I don't get why people wouldn't go through with Morrigan's ritual, or how the heck that's the "default world state" for DA:I. Like, why would you go "oh, you have a way to save everyone and we can all live happily? nah, I'd much rather make this a suicide thing."

I've heard the argument of: well, you'd be sacrificing an innocent baby...however, to me, I never really considered it a "normal" infant in the first place. And my logic is always to rescue an actual person over a potential person.

It leaves a bad taste in some people's mouths that Alistair loathes everything about Morrigan, yet the Warden as his best friend can convince him to sleep with her (even, if not romancing him, lose his virginity to her). Worse when romancing him as a woman, so your Warden is encouraging her true love to knock up another woman (while she and Alistair will probably never have kids of their own together). Then add on the fact that you have no idea if this kid's gonna utterly wreck shit when he grows up, you've only got Morrigan's dubious word on it, the same chick who didn't blink an eye when sending someone to kill her mother. Lots of hinky stuff going on with that ritual, I'd say. I do it sometimes, depending on the character, tell Morrigan to step off other times.

My (female Cousland) Warden made the Ultimate Sacrifice without giving it a second thought. Morrigan's ritual was a horrifying idea for her -- giving an unborn child the soul of an ancient false-god dragon? Which might also be influenced by being an Archdemon? And doing who-knows-what to the actual soul of the baby (or the soul the Maker would have put in it, or however it works), to boot. There's also the fact that this was being done by Morrigan, who the Warden liked, but, well, you'd think she'd be a bit more wary of the idea of creating a child specifically to be the victim of mystic soul-transfer experimentation, given her background. (And there's also the fact that this could very well have been an idea planted in her head by Flemeth for her own reasons. Morrigan learned all she knew about magic from Flemeth, and I wouldn't trust Flemeth to give her complete and accurate information in the slightest, meaning it's hard to trust what Morrigan says about the ritual not causing any problems.) Creating some potential god-monster-abomination that could do who-knows-what to the world just to save her own life struck my Warden as very, very selfish and short-sighted. It broke her heart to send Morrigan away, but given the circumstances, she just had to.

After that, it came down to her or Alistair for the sacrifice, and again it was no contest. She'd gotten Alistair and Anora married -- Alistair had the bloodline, and Anora the actual ruling skills. It was what was best for Ferelden. Sacrificing Alistair would undo all that and send the country back into chaos. The Warden... well, she theoretically had a brother still out there, even if she doubted in her heart he was still alive. The Cousland line might not be extinct, and even if it was, the loss of a Teyrn's family was far less important than the loss of a king. Her only regret was leaving Leliana alone... but again, one person is a small price to pay for saving the world.

I slept with him, and also Leliana (and Zevran, and Morrigan with a gender-restriction free mod), then told him to marry Anora and that I wouldn't be his mistress, and ran off into the sunset with Leliana.

I dunno, him and Anora just makes too much sense for political reasons. It actually is strange to me that people deliberately play any other way. But then, I've never been a human noble woman origin so I guess it's a moot point.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
This is a good example of over investment

Then let me anger you, OP: My favorite Alistair romance is mistress to him as sole king. And my only Queen Warden romanced Zevran.

Sucks to be a dwarf or elf warden, I guess?

I like Anora tho so...

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
No! You've got it all wrong! Cousland is a dude and Alistair isn't king of Ferelden. Anora rules alone!

Seriously though, I'm as protective of my Warden as anyone. But there are lots of different Warden backgrounds and characterizations, and Alistair is a fictional character in a game that allows dozens of variations on how his story plays out.

I love Alistair more than is probably healthy (he's still my favorite BioWare romance), but I love the other characters too much to only romance him. The Zevran romance was an awesome experience, and Leliana is sweet too. I have, oddly enough, missed him a bit when I was romancing other characters, but I got over it.

I never married him though, because I didn't care for the human origin stories. I just left him as a warden and he and my adorable dwarves stayed together. He didn't seem to want to be King... I don't regret choosing that. (Er, despite... Changing that in the keep on a few playthroughs, but honestly, I still like the idea of keeping him as a warden.)

Text: The idea of the Warden not marrying him and becoming queen makes me really angry for some reason, more so if he winds up with Anora.

I can’t romance any other characters either becaue it makes me feel like I’m breaking his heart.

I am replying to all the secrets because it is a slow night. And my parents are here. And my baby has pneumonia. And I probably do too. It is a sad night at Lorraine's house.

Ahem.

I do not know this fandom, but this guy totally looks like he's making a "How you doing?" face ala Joey from Friends.

your child has pneumonia? that's awful, I hope they feel get well soon (you too)

Knowing Alistair... that is probably a fairly accurate idea. Just add a side of sarcasm.

I used to like him a lot.

Then I replayed the game.

God he's such an insufferable baby most of the time. I'm sorry. I'm a new fucking warden, I have NO IDEA WHAT I AM DOING, yet he basically goes "nope I'm following you I dont want to lead".

Then, I make decisions, and all he does is fucking bitch about them if he doesn't agree. Well, if you were the leader, by all means, bitch the fuck away, but you aren't, so sit down and shut up.

He doesn't want to be king. Got it. But he doesn't want Anora on the throne. So I put him on the throne to avoid Anora, and whooooa boy, bitch bitch bitch.

I'm sorry. I can't handle him. He's a fucking baby, and won't marry me if I'm anything other than a human anyways.

No thanks. I'll go be with Zevran or Leliana who appreciate me more.

I'm sort of the same. He used to be my favorite companion from DA:O, but now he's not even close.

Depending on how you play the Warden, the extent of Alistair's self-centered behavior really shines. All of the Origins companions are (to account for different player backgrounds), but with the others it's kind of understandable. They either don't give a fuck about your background or do care but the middle of a blight isn't the time and place for crying about it.

One of Alistair's most memorable dialogue bits for me is the one where he's talking about the Wardens and then asks if you've ever lost someone. "Why yes, Alistair, I guess you forgot how my entire family was recently murdered."

My main Warden was supposed to be a teenager who's leadership experience consists of teaching Barkspawn to sit. His family is dead, the Wardens are dead, and senior Warden Alistair is putting everything on Cousland's shoulders because Alistair doesn't know what to do? And if you fuck things up he gets pissed off? Bullshit.

He's also 19.

19-year-olds aren't generally stunning paragons of responsibility and maturity.

I never quite understood Alistair's appeal? I mean, he's fine, I don't hate him or anything, but in my tiny amount of playing, I actually liked Leilana more than expected. (And had I gotten far enough and my game hadn't glitched, I would've probably liked Shale and Sten the best.)

Ehh... Aside from the fact that I really don't get that deeply attached to any character that I get angry at other options, my view of the whole plot is influenced by my own Warden, who is not only a non-marriagable option (Elven Mage), but about halfway through my first play-through went from being an expy of my Silmaril RP character to being another alternate life of hers.

Given that she was un-marriagable, when I was playing her game I thought to option of being Alistair's mistress was an ideal compromise considering the politics and prejudices presented in the game. I am not someone who complains about the cultures depicted in the game being "unfair!" because they won't allow some perfect ideal. I prefer the faulty realism of a world that has prejudices against certain races etc., as it gives far more depth and genuine colour to the story.

I've played through Origins twice and both times I made Loghain do the ritual. By that point in the game I was always broken up with Alistair anyway (went on to romance Zevran after the Landsmeet in m first game, and didn't bother with anyone else in the second), and since I was playing as an elf marriage wasn't an option... I just wanted to pick the option with the lowest bodycount xD The kid seems okay in the end anyway, if a little creepy.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-22 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
I made sure Loghain lived and had Alistair become a drunk. Best. Ending.

I just never liked Alistair or got why the fandom loves him. He was basically bland and irritating the whole way through. I couldn't giv two shits about the Warden because they're basically a blank slate with no personality, so... Loghain is my man. He's far more interesting to me.
