I'm not sure how you got from A to B, here.

I think they're thinking -- if I really liked it for itself, I wouldn't care about the creator.

I think I'm your polar opposite. Unless it's related to the material, I couldn't care less about the author's personal dirt.

Megadeth aside (and to be fair my giving up on MD coincided with me giving up/growing out of metal in general, so that's probably a factor) I'm the same way, but I do make exceptions for people convicted of certain crimes -- it's the big reason why I won't ever watch Chinatown despite me being a fan of film noir because fuck me if I'm ever going to support or even feel like I'm supporting a convicted child rapist.

It's honestly a mystery to me how someone could consume media on a regular basis and not come across a few creators on whom no real 'dirt' can be found. There have been and are plenty of creative people out there who never did do anything genuinely awful, or if they did, no one knows about it.

idk, I think it depends if we're going by real-world awful or tumblr awful. Because if they mean the latter then yes, they cannot enjoy anything by anybody ever again.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's actually a big problem, since no one is going to have a flawless record for everything, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, it's not necessarily a big problem! They didn't say the creator had to have a flawless record. I assume they realize there are levels of "dirt" and aren't going to be turned off something because they found out the creator stole a pack of gum when he was 12.

Can you like things when you know nothing at all about the creator? If not, then yeah, you appreciate books/movies/music differently than most people.

If so, then you might be a little more extreme than some, but being put off by bad things about creators is hardly unusual. I think everyone gets it to some extent. With some creators/works/bad things combos, I think it's nearly impossible not to be put off.

Personally I suggest not seeking information about creators, but that's your call.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I get turned off something when I find out even innocuous details about the creator's life, never mind dirt, so I can sympathise. Even seeing a photo is a do-not-want.

I also wonder if I ever really appreciated a thing deeply if I can get put off so easily. Other people seem fine about this kind of thing and even get angry if I tell them I can't read their fics if I've seen what they look like.

Serious question - do you never look at the author's pic when you read a book? They can be hard to avoid.

Maybe not, but you probably just need to work on your expectations and your idea of what creative people should be. Creating something great doesn't mean you're great yourself, or even that you should be. You're just a person who has an unusual profession but is as flawed as anyone else. This perception around Tumblr and elsewhere of writers as enlightened beings to be consulted like oracles on all the pressing issues of our time is especially bizarre to me. Writers are obsessive weirdos who fantasize about random shit all day and sometimes manage to express those fantasies in a way that appeals to others. I've been at it for decades and have made tens of dollars, so you can trust me on this. lol

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Some writers on the internet have become our new oracles, haven't they? That's kind of hilarious given how reliable the old ones were.

I don't think it's that unusual.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, sometimes the associations your mind makes can really off-putting. Unless you do it for every piece of dirt, even the petty stuff. I liked Rosemary's Baby when I first watched it when I was fairly young and didn't know who Polanski was (not that I really paid much attention to directors or screenplay writers at the time). I also don't watch anything with Sean Penn in it. And I can't listen to anything with Chris Brown.

Re: I don't think it's that unusual.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god Polanski yes.

I remember finding out he'd done Chinatown after I'd seen it and being horrified anew by certain plot points. It all explain s so much. Never knowingly watch one of his films again.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I don't like learning about the creators/actors of media I like because my impressions of them color how I see the work. I just can't separate it from the work itself.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I stopped reading Hetalia.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Why? Is the creator actually a neo-nazi or something?

Text: I’m so easily turned off things when I find out dirt about the creator that I worry I have no real appreciation for movies, books, or music.

Ahahaha! I've loved every Roman Polanski Movie, and he seems like a really nice guy to me. I think judging people is kinda overrated. maybe it's genetic. My mom once was penpals with a convicted, imprisoned terrorist murderer back in the wild days.

SA
My family's always been in law enforcement in some way or another (police/court/prison officers), so maybe it's to do with having direct contact/experience with the people "behind the deed"?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
and he seems like a really nice guy to me
Because you know him personally?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
He's a "really nice guy" who gave a thirteen-year-old child quaaludes and champagne and then raped her.

So, uh.

I don't see why it's a problem as long as it's not really minor stuff you'd forgive normal people for. Everyone says stupid things sometimes, or does stupid things, but there's dumb and then there's 'raped a bunch of kids' bad.

It's sort of like if you went to a restaurant and sat down and had an amazing dinner and then after you ate it the chef comes out
"Did you like it? Well HAHAHA, I killed your parents and that meal was their flesh!"

I don't think anyone would except you to go "Well, to be fair, it was a delicious dinner. I don't see how knowing that horrible behind the scenes fact should ruin it."
