Maybe an unpopular opinion but I really, really dislike The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger does a good job, but the Joker is just Johan Liebert-lite.

It's incredibly manipulative and I hate how conservative its message is -- it's basically designed to pander to Republicans, especially that ending.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. I thought it was a deeply substandard film.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
The message is that everyone can be good and selfless, even hardened convicts? That's conservative?

I agree! It was far from a perfect movie, but as a superhero movie it was groundbreaking; I think it's easy to forget that now. I saw it in the theaters almost ten times.

I could type out a proper reply but I feel like I've been here before. Over here willing to start a "I liked The Dark Knight but also love some subsequent superhero films because they have different tones and goals, and that's ok" party.

Does a superhero movie have to be "realistic," dark, and depressing to be good?

Honestly, while I think The Dark Knight is good, I think Iron Man is a better movie in terms of what came out at the same time. And that some of the other Marvel movies like Cap 2 are better as well.

Also, I am rarely in a place where I can actually rewatch DK. It is just so oppressively depressing. It makes me miserable to watch it.

Man, I love this movie a bunch, it's basically Heat with Batman in it, but come on...

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but I have to question your brain functions. That movie sucked donkey balls. It was long, boring, and the plot only worked because every single character seems to have an IQ somewhat south of 70.

I loved TDK and Batman Begins, they're fun for me in a different way to the MCU films but I also love my silly Marvel movies too. But I like a mix of serious business and fun/goofy movies, I don't like having too much of one type otherwise I'll feel bogged down and get sick of it.

Image: Batman from the Dark Knight trilogy

Text: It's been 7 years and nothing has topped this. I'm afraid there won't be another superhero movie this good in years. Most superhero movies are really bad and dumb, it makes me sad. I love superheros.

Some of the MCU movies are good, but most of them have terrible writing. And don't make me start on the Superman movies.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Over the last two decades I've watched a great deal of superhero films, and out of all of it The Dark Knight is doubtless the most challenging.

The Dark Knight is not a simplistic tale of good and evil. Batman is good, yes, The Joker is evil, yes. But Batman poses a more complex puzzle than usual: The citizens of Gotham City are in an uproar, calling him a vigilante and blaming him for the deaths of policemen and others. And the Joker is more than a villain. He’s a Mephistopheles whose actions are fiendishly designed to pose moral dilemmas for his enemies.

Because these actors and others are so powerful, and because the movie does not allow its spectacular special effects to upstage the humans, we’re surprised how deeply the drama affects us. Eckhart does an especially good job as Harvey Dent, whose character is transformed by a horrible fate into a bitter monster. It is customary in a comic book movie to maintain a certain knowing distance from the action, to view everything through a sophisticated screen. The Dark Knight slips around those defenses and engages us.

FOR YOU
Jokes aside, I like the TDK trilogy but I prefer to keep an open mind about superhero films.

I love the Nolanverse films, but I don't agree that there aren't plenty of other good superhero films out there. I think the first Iron Man in particular is a very strong film, and Captain America: TWS couldn't have been much better. (Actually, I DO like TWS as much as The Dark Knight, and no, not just for Bucky.)

If you prefer Nolanverse to the Marvel films then I'm going to assume you want a more serious film with little humor, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just different. I don't see why we can't have both. (...And again, I feel like Marvel does a pretty good job of dealing with heavy real world issues like depression and PTSD in a realistic, sensitive way while still keeping a good sense of humor about things.)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a big DC/Batman fan, not a Marvel fan, and I'd still say Winter Soldier was a better movie. I never liked the Nolan films; TDK is well-made, but it's self-serious to the point of being leaden, and at no point as smart as it thinks it is.

I really enjoy TDK as a film itself but I have to admit in retrospect it's been a bit sullied for me due to what followed after it. I hated TDKR and I dislike how it seems like DC's current plan for all its movies regardless of what hero they feature is "dark and gritty and realistic! Like The Dark Knight but with a different superhero!" and totally ignoring that what works for Batman doesn't work for all heroes (why yes, I hated Superman Returns, how'd you know). As a self-contained film I think it's excellent and the clear best of the trilogy but as the precursor of a trend I'm not so thrilled. Basically if we're stuck with most superhero movies having to be either Iron Man or The Dark Knight, I'll take Iron Man.

I've liked almost every superhero movie I've seen since tDK came out better than tDK. Even the 2013 Superman movie was better than tDK.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Superheroes do tend to be pretty dumb. Action movies are also dumb, add the impossible elements that superheroes bring with them and it'll be pretty dumb.

Also agreeing with others in this thread: grit is not quality even if you it makes you feel smart or cool.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-02 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
You have very little concept of what a Superhero is it seems. Batman is one never a superhero. And he certainly wasn't a hero at all in that movie.

I think the main problem I have with this kind of "so edgy and dark" version of Batman is ... well sure, you can make the universe all grim and dark and gritty, but you can't really expect me to take it seriously when the hero is a grown ass man wearing a bat costume.

Yeah, the MCU in general left me pretty apathetic, while TDK is one of my all time favourite movies, so I guess I'm with you. Though I will at least say that some of the MCU stuff has been good ... just not "as good." But IMO, it would take a lot for something to be as good.
