Female characters you love

Since we're on a positive bent today.

Who and why? :D

Almost every female character in the Resident Evil series. They're all varied, capable, awesome, and they don't take anyone's shit. Plus, they save their male counterparts as often as they need saving, which is depressingly rare for video games these days.

Peggy Carter

She's not perfect -- has quite a temper, can be quick to anger and get jealous
But she's given the full spectrum of human emotions -- sadness, happiness, frustration, anger, smugness, etc.

For some reason the one most on my mind right now is Perdita from the 101 Dalmatians book. I will never forgive the movie for cutting her out (and giving her name that she loved to Missus!). She's just so sweet and I really relate to her anxiety over being useful.

Another one I just thought of is Audrey Hepburn's character in Wait Until Dark. She's trying so hard to stay positive about adjusting to becoming blind and learning the new skills she needs, but I love the moment where her husband pushes her too hard and she snaps "Do I have to be the world's champion blind lady?". She's also really smart and brave and kind.

I'm currently watching "Leverage," so Parker and Sophie. They were both so great at their professions (as was Maggie... love her too) and they always supported each other despite their differences. :)

The Homestuck girls. They are (of course) flawed but I love that they are basically as flawed and as funny as the male characters in the comic.

And I like most of them on some level, Homestuck has more male characters that annoy me then female ones.

Katara from ATLA. One of the things that I like best about her is that while she's a very nurturing, gentle person who often takes a mothering ole towards her friends, she's also someone who has anger problems and even more hatred towards the fire nation than Sokka does (not that it's unfounded considering that her village was attacked by Fire nation troops and her mother was murdered in front of her) and she isn't always someone who forgives easily. I like that she was also pretty big on vigilante justice even though it put her at odds with Aang and sometimes Sokka. A lot of the time, "healer" characters like Katara seem very passive and one dimensional, but it was nice that she was layered.

From Flashpoint (Canadian cop series) I loved Jules, Leah, Donna, and Winnie. The first three held various roles on the tactical squad and were really tough, decent cops. (Jules was main cast through the whole series, she was originally a sniper but gradually repurposed into negotiator/tean sergeant, Leah was a cool-headed former firefighter, and Donna was a replacement character when the Jules actress was on maternity leave but the show kept finding roles for her.) The whole show was basically "cops we wish we had," but those women especially. Winnie was the dispatcher and I just liked her calm manner.

I also love Abbie and Jenny Mills on Sleepy Hollow. (I actually liked Katrina fine as well so I'm a bit of an outlier.) I liked Sheriff Reyes--well, I like her, but there was a bizarre moment when she shot someone under circumstances when a Flashpoint character would have negotiated, so that bothered me. I basically love sister relationships a lot so I am all about the Mills girls.

Most of the women in CrossGen are amazing. Some highlights:

Emma from Ruse. She's a stereotypical Victorian woman (loves her makeup and must be dressed appropriately, etc.) but she also insists on being treated as Simon's partner and not his assistant. She insists on being included but isn't nagging about it. She can solve cases on her own. She's also got magic but doesn't need to rely on it.

Sephie from Meridian. She thinks out her problems. She likes 2 boys but her world doesn't revolve around this issue. She makes mistakes but learns from them and moves on. She keeps trying. But she doesn't lose her compassion. She feels like such a well-rounded young woman.

Cassie from Route 666. She's on the run, demons are after her, and she's not sure of her own mental health. But you see her evolve from being scared and confused to growing more confident and beginning to fight back.

Evelyn Carnahan/O' Connell from 'The Mummy' movies. From that drunken speech in the first movie ("I am proud of what I am. I ... am a librarian!" *falls over*) in particular, I just madly adore her courage and humour and curiosity and occasionally suicidal fascination with things. Evie is the best. I wanted to be her so badly. Still do, really.

Charlene from 'The Librarian' movies and show. Just for being a snarky badass librarian bureaucrat who occasionally pulls out a sword to deal with shit. Again, kind of want to be her when I grow up, despite the fact that I'm currently nearly thirty and you'd think that would have already happened by now if it was going to at all.

Lydia Asher from 'Those Who Hunt the Night'. Curious turn-of-the-century doctor/scientist who holds her own in a world of vampires and spies and madmen and the odd triad gang. Tracks down vampire lairs all by her lonesome just by paperwork, helps plant massive chlorine bombs to destroy nests, remains very conscious of what vampire mental powers can do to consent, once ran through an enemy compound after having been kidnapped while thinking 'Damn those gangsters for stealing my glasses' to herself. I adore her.

Yes, I have a thing for librarians/scientists/bureaucrats, particularly those who regularly deal with vampires/monsters/weird shit a lot.

Speaking of, Dame Estelle Matsuko from Honor Harrington, for being a badass bureaucrat/diplomat. Also Eloise Pritchard from the same series, with added Lady of War for being the president of a wartime space nation, an ex-revolutionary, an ex-double agent, and a current all-round badass. A lot of the characters in those books, actually. I'm only so-so on the politics, but the characters are amazing.

Also a bunch more characters from a bunch more things, but apparently it's my bookish lady loves that are on my mind this evening.

Aveline from Dragon Age. She's just so charmingly awkward and loyal. Her hilarious but eventually successful courtship of Donnic ("So...it's a nice night for an evening") was one of my favorite parts of DA II.

Elisa Maza will always be amazing to me. She's confident and well-respected in her profession. She manages to handle herself gracefully in all these strange situations she finds herself in. I like that she doesn't have all the answers and doesn't always know what to do.

Though I don't love them quite so well, most of the other women in the series were equally engaging and interesting.

Sarah Forbes (Odyssey 5)

She's a great fleshed out character and believable as a person. She has her own career, besides being a good mother. She takes initiative, is not afraid to state her opinion, makes mistakes and admits to them.

There are many. But one in particular is Martina Zorilla from Spacetrawler which is a webcomic that I will always love to death.

What I love about her is that she's so good. I think it's hard to write characters that are really good without making them priggish or sticks-in-the-mud or having them come off as inflexible, or without having it so that they never have to face any really difficult moral dilemmas. And Martina completely avoids all that. She's basically a normal person who's thrown into this completely bizarre situation (kidnapped by aliens to fight a galactic war of liberation) and very visibly doing her best to survive and make sense of things while also holding to her very real, strong moral principles. And you can almost visibly see the strain it causes on her and the pain she feels from her failures and from the various calculations and compromises that she has to make, but at the same time, she never loses her faith in goodness and she never stops trying to do better, but also never stops feeling believable and real. And she manages to accomplish a hell of a lot just on the basis of caring far, far too much about everything and I just love her to death. Also, she falls in love with a giant snake-monster and it's really sweet.

Also: Marian Halcombe from The Woman In White. Just incredibly daring and brave and intelligent and resourceful. Thrown into situations where she's incredibly desperate and has no help whatsoever with enemies all around her and she just manages to keep hanging on by the skin of her teeth and never dying, out of nothing more than love for her (rather dippy) half-sister. And, again, still feeling realistic about it all.

So basically, judging by those two examples, the kinds of female characters I really love are normal women who just out of sheer force of will and moral uprightness and bravery and intense emotion do insane, amazing stuff and just manage to survive while holding on to their convictions. Yep, checks out. Also, I love seeing good characters put into moral dilemmas, yes I do.

Honorable mentions: Eowyn, Ivanova, most of the female characters from the Chalion books, Dana Scully
elaminator: (Legend of the Seeker - Kahlan (turn))

A lot of the ones I love have already been mentioned, but Dragon Age has a lot of fantastic female characters. As far as Inquisition goes I'm particularly fond of Cassandra (who's unexpectedly sweet) and Josephine (who's unexpectedly brutal), and though she isn't my favorite I have a certain respect for Vivienne because she's unapologetic and straight-forward in a way I could never be. (Also, she's damn badass.)

Kahlan from LOTS deserves a shout-out, and Lagertha from Vikings. The entire cast of Rat Queens as well, and The Boss from Metal Gear Solid.

Jenny Sparks from The Authority, Ellie from The Last of Us, Clem from TWDG, Elena from Uncharted, Ava from Justified, lots of Mass Effect characters, especially Samara, Tali and Liara...

Oh! And Barbara Gordon from DC.

Shit, I forgot Mary Read from Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. She was by far my favorite part of that game; such a neat, likable character.

Most of them actually. If a character has serious problems, chances are quite good that the rest of the work has deeper problems. There's no point in calling out Tauriel as a bad character in the over-inflated third act when the entire screenplay was an indulgent piece of shit.

Lara Croft, before the most recent reboot.

Kickass and confident.
Charming and witty.
English accent and gorgeous.
Total history nerd with spectacular gymnast skills.
Fantastically wealthy with a lust for adventure.

LITERALLY everything I wanted ( and still want) to be.

Also, boobs.

The last female character I really loved was probably Akemi Homura.

I like a lot of characters, but I only love those who are either extremely, unfailingly good or have a lot of fucked up things going on. This applies to male characters too, really.

Abby Sciuto from NCIS. I love her because she's smart, doesn't take BS off of anyone and is just so damned happy/positive. I pretty much adore Garcia from Criminal Minds for similar reasons (and yes, I headcanon that they know each other, lol).

Also from NCIS: Kate Todd, I still miss her sometimes. And I love Bishop-I'm glad they went opposite Ziva's type for her replacement. And from CM: Elle Greenaway, JJ Jareau, Alex Blake and I like Kate Callahan (honestly wasn't sure how I'd take to her as it's Jennifer Love Hewitt, but so far, so good). I also like Seaver--that was a bad time at CM anyways... And I liked Strauss as well--though she had to grow on me, but I did come to appreciate her.

From Person of Interest: I loved Joss Carter, sad that she's gone. Shaw--she's really quite kick ass and awesome, I miss her as well *sigh*. This is one of the few shows where there was a character I hated that I ended up liking after a while. When Root first showed up--I did not like her at all. Now, I do. Not quite sure what changed, but I actually like her now.

Leverage: Love, love, love Parker. Exactly cus she's 20lbs of crazy in a 5 lb bag. I really liked her character arc and growth throughout the show. And I was really disappointed that Tara Cole didn't replace Sophie permanently. I just enjoyed her and her interactions with the team soooo much.

Burn Notice: Fionna Glennanne. What's not to like about a woman who loves blowing things up and shooting people (and who is fucking great at it)? Liked that she didn't put up with Michael's bullshit either...and that she and Sam Axe seemed like they were fighting for Michael's affection/attention all the time. Though they did end up caring for each other, in their own ways.

Kay Howard, from HLots--woman making in a man's world. Melinda May from AOS. Arya Stark from GOT, Claire Underwood from House of Cards (I love her and Frank's marriage and style), Elizabeth Burke, White Collar--supportive of her husband and his work without sacrificing her self, Stella Gibson from The Fall--I love that she's a woman with some power and doesn't mind making the men around her uncomfortable when they're being sexist douchebags... I'm sure there's more, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

All the female characters in Gunnerkrigg Court.

Antimony keeps developing her character upwards and sideways and outwards and it's very interesting to see her grow.

Kat is always awesome while still being flawed, and instead of her flaws being derided or ignored, they are treated with love and compassion.

Paz blindsided me because I was pretty 'meh' about her at first but now I really like her.

I can never predict what will come from Zimmy and Gamma and I really like that level of codependent relationship explored.

Jones is Jones.

The more we see from characters from the past (Surma, Jeanne), the more we see they were not the idealized forms the other characters present them as, but that doesn't make them horrible. Just human.

Anja is pretty cool for the "best friend's mom" character, and even the minor characters like Janet, Margo (?) and everyone else keep being developed nicely in the background.

Oh, and the fairies! Gotta love those jerks.

I've also grown very attached to Sette from Unsounded, and I just keep hoping she can get away from... well, from all the terrible stuff going on in that world.

I used to just tolerate her, since she was so pivotal to the plot, but the more we see of her childhood, the more I felt for her.
