A lot of people are bashing you for being so OMG PRETENTIOUS AND MEAN IT IS ART TOO OKAY ;___________________;;;;;;
I'm personally sick of receiving answers like 'the Naruto guy' and 'Tite Kubo' when I ask people to name their favourite artists. It's impossible to have a conversation about actual art these days when the only 'artists' people have even HEARD about are their TOTALLY AWESOME JAPANESE MANGA-KAS desudesu >3<.
I enjoy anime and manga, yeah, for the stories. The art is utter shit these days. Go back to the 80's and you get slightly better results, but the triangular heads and anorexic figures that are popular these days? I simply don't see that can begin to be appealing.

8. I've honestly never heard of him being called Gneil (or of Pterry). Hearing it for the first time, I kind of thing Pterry and Gneil is kind of cute. Just, as a language thing. (But then, I have obscure lignuistic reasons for thinking that the fact that my two best guy friends are Mark and Nick is funny).


17. It's not exactly a "Cry Moar, writers!" sort of situation. The contract terms are archaic and aren't taking into account royalties as they apply in this decade. It creates a lot of problems, but it's not because the writers are being greedy little buggers.

Well, with a bit less angst, but on one hand, I think the Host Club concept is cool, but on the other hand, I have low self-esteem and trouble reading people, so I always assume that they don't really want to be with me, especially if they're a hot guy, and if I was paying for the privelege, well, that would just confirm my feelings.

21. That is one of the most ignorant, disgusting things I've ever read in a long, long while.
I'm not really a manga or an anime fan so much these days either. I was once upon a time; now, I really just don't care about it so mcuh. But to dismiss an entire branch of storytelling and art as if it were all the exact frikken same thing...LAME. Blaming anime for hentai is like blaming movies/television or magazines for porn.

Nor real artistic or intellectual merit. Bull. Just bull. Formulaic? Some is. Just like some Victorian novels were formulaic, or some tv shows are. But not all of it. Like any art/literature, there's good and there's bad. And like just about any art/literature, the crap tends to outweigh the good.

I kind of can't help but hope you fail, just for having such a disturbingly small mind. You claim to be open minded, but you ignorant dismissal of a whole for percieved faults of some...that's just sad.

But you're probably just a troll doing it for the lawls anyway, so, whatever.

The anime was absolutely horrific. The manga was much better, because it knew it was stupid and totally rolled with it. The art was three million times better, even in the beginning (and that's saying something).

Time to break out the stupid stick.

1. Not all writers are paid big bucks. Think of every show that goes into a third season. Not many, yes? Most barely last one. Those are the only writers that ever see substantial amounts of money. The rest are middle-class if they're lucky, and they manage that based on residuals from reruns of their shows and DVD sales. This isn't even mentioning how old their current contract was or the issues of internet content.

2. The AMPTP does not just deal with the WGA. They also make contracts with all those other people you feel sorry for. The Writer's Guild is the first to renew their contract with the AMPTP and so they set the tone for every other contract made after them. Essentially, if the writer's get screwed over so does everyone else. And the writers have taken this responsibility seriously. If they let themselves be screwed over, it will create a landslide effect.

3. If not for writers, those workers you mentioned wouldn't have jobs anyway. And that's the point being made. No writers, no shows, no money for anyone.

Now, I do agree that the WGA and AMPTP need to get the hell over themselves and start negotiations again, but it is the AMPTP that needs to start backing down, not the writers.

21. But then that same argument would have to sort of be applied to most comics in general. You can't not argue that manga, or Japanese comics we'll say here, is a form of art because then that would mean other kinds of comics such as US comics, Spanish comics, French and Franco-Belgian comics would not be considered art either. (Granted the latter two can vary from childish to extremely detailed and serious and...oh no! intellectual. Some of the 'adult' series have beautiful panels and full page paintings that merit a place in an art gallery. Some of these panels make use of digital or traditional mediums such as watercolour, acrylic, oils, inks, charcoal etc.)

You mentioned that porn (a subgenre, I suppose. Not one I particularily identify with in any comicbook type) as an example of the decline of the Japanese culture--would you apply this example to French BDs and independant US comics too? (among others? So Brazillian, Italian--like Sky Doll, mind that's more adult-erotic--Franco-Belgian etc.) Would the subgenre still signal a decline in those cultures? Because, usually the biggest sign of the decline in a culture is more political, socio-political, sociological and (in a way...) economically oriented rather than artistic--that probably acts as one of the ways to indicate something is wrong, but it doesn't act as a major cause in a society's cultural decline. Subcultures have very little power on a society. (unless they band together and become 'the culture'...)

It should also be noted though, that next to the Television/Movie fandom, the anime and manga fandom is probably the next biggest and most of the users on LJ are anime and manga fans.

Also, Art History programmes tend to have a major incredible slant towards Western art. You can focus on an era, it's style, but from what I've been able to see, it's almost always focuses on Western art and most school feature extremely little on East Asian art, or African, South American, South Asia or other art styles. Maybe one course or the rare two, but nothing more.



Actually don't know why I bothered replying to this, but oh well. When you staunchly defend comics as a medium or art form and are a sociology and communications major....which I don't see how that has any bearing on my opinion but, anyhow. PS. Not from a Top 10 US university therefore, I am lesser than thou?
