I think it feels less insulting to Americans because America is so gigantic. We have so many different cultures and regions within our own country that if someone is making fun of Texas, New Yorkers don't take it as an insult and vice versa.

We perceive it as "about those guys, not us," not realizing that to the people in the other country? We all are "those guys."

This reminds me of a Tumblr post that said white people/European countries were to blame for the actions of the Japanese during World War II, because the Japanese were manipulated by white people and didn't know any better.

I mean, jeez, do you really want people to think of non-Americans as complete idiots who don't understand cultural relations or parodies? This sounds like "the noble savage" all over again...except with every country in the world except America? What?

Uh, no, can't agree. Other countries portray America/Americans in unflattering ways all the time: we're fat, obsessed with guns and fast food, loud and uncultured, etc. etc. These stereotypes are most definitely done for humor as well.

It's a bit weird you excuse non-American countries for being unfamiliar with American culture because lol, what? Who do you think is consuming American media? Hint: it's not just Americans. If anything else, AMERICANS are the ones who are unfamiliar with non-American countries and cultures. It still doesn't excuse their portrayal of other countries, but there's no denying the xenophobia and ignorance a lot of people have about life outside the U.S.
