If it's not people stealing the Japanese fans' fanart and just plain reposting it on dA (they can all go to hell for plain old stealing and then getting their panties in a twist when someone's omgmeen), it's terrible copies of screencaps.

36: Well, if you ignore the last five or six chapters of wtf-deus-ex-ending, the bits where the angst is so thick you could cut it (after cutting yourself because man, that was some serious angst), and the Yuffentine, it's a technically well-written, consistently characterized epic-length AU fanfic with fairly detailed worldbuilding. The characters may only bear a passing resemblance to what we saw in the game, but they are consistent. As a piece of writing, it's actually decent.

As a piece of FFVII fic...well, I hate the S/C pairing to begin with and feel the basic premise to the pairing is inherently out of character. But apart from that, most of what the fandom produces in that area is complete and utter steaming crap. In fact, most of what the FFVII fandom produces in general is utter steaming crap, so comparatively, "A Long Hard Road" is still pretty good, particularly once you take into account the fact that it is an epic-length AU. Compared to other epic-length AUs in the fandom, it's a shining beacon of good writing. (Though, by all means, feel free to contradict me with examples! I'm always in the mood for good fic.)

Anyway, tl;dr, and I apologize- I'm not saying you have to love it, or even like it. There parts of it that I absolutely hated (not a S/C fan, like I said, and the ending still makes me bang my head against a wall a bit), but it isn't completely without merit.

I'm sorry you've got to worry about getting lynched by rabid S/C fen for disliking the story; half the fun of fanfic, for me, is being able to critique it and discuss or rant about characterization and such.

Considering the author would probably be more than willing to engage in those same debates, it's fun indeed. And LHR does carry a cohesive plot over a great stretch of story.
