Originally, there was supposed to be a romantic past between Chakotay and Tom. No joke. It's even alluded to in some of the very early episodes. But for some weird reason, they decided to cut it out of their backstory. It completely heterosexualized both of them but yeah, Chakotay? Meant to be flamingly gay.

Beltran is still upset that they pulled that.

(I love the fact that both the actors went into it WILLING to play the gay. I HATE that they pulled it from the backstory.

Oh, and after you've seen "The Chute" - there was the possibility of a canon Harry/Tom thing that also never got written.
