So... you go around doing this on kinkmemes or A03?

Because, I really hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I sincerely doubt anyone is going to care if you're leaving reviews telling them their porn is problematic.

I don't understand. Why would you assume that they're unaware that the content they're writing is, to some, offensive? It seems safe to assume that they know what they're doing and are choosing to do it. Am I misunderstanding the secret?

Not only is this tl;dr, but it struck me as being very self-righteous.

Newsflash: you don't 'need' to leave flames on anything. And you are not responsible for choosing which tropes need to disappear and which should be permitted to stay.

Is this a troll secret?

"Flames." Omg, we seriously need to bring that back. I hardly ever see that phrase used anymore.

God, this sounds so obnoxious.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I know right?

It reminds me of the passive aggressive "friendly reminders" on tumblr.

I am glad MLP helps inspire you to be less of an asshole. That is much better than the alternative.

Now go be even less of an asshole than that. You can do it!

I love this comment so much.

Eheh, OP sounds terribly like me when I was young and new to the ways of fandom. I blush to think of some of the sanctimonious tripe I posted in ff.net 'reviews' of fics, carefully and patiently explaining to authors why they were misguided for writing about such unwholesome topics (self-harm and abuse, usually, I carefully steered my innocent young mind away from any of that Dreadful Sexy Stuff or hadn't found the filter for the adult-rated fics yet).

...I really wish I'd had the example of MLP before me to inspire me to be less of an asshole. 15 years on, the remembrance of my shame is great.

Glad people like you exist OP. Writing this sick twisted shit wouldn't be half so fun if there wasn't someone out there clutching their pearls over it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Soooooo, was it you who read the fic about a socially taboo pairing just to tell me that daddy kink is dirty and dangerous and that I should think of the children and stop writing stories that portrayed it in a loving relationship?

Because yeah, that was kind of the point.

Why do you feel the need to do this in the first place? I mean, assuming the author hasn't asked for concrit? A lot of authors are aware those tropes are problematic but enjoy them anyway - and probably just think you're an ass.

I have seen comments like yours on ao3 and tumblr. They are annoying.

Example.

"What a disappointing fic. This took Middle Earth and completely erased its magic for the sake of making the fic darker and "gritty".

Your ableist caricature of the unnamed dwarf woman was downright disgusting. Rather than using magic to explain Bilbo needing food or cleaning, you use a disabled character. Dwarves have a canonical sign language and she easily could have communicated what was going on (being half blind would not prevent her from knowing sign language, though she likely would have had to use fingerspelling). Claiming that she would starve without that work is wrong; Bifur proves that dwarves can be disabled and still a part of dwarf society. In fact, it is very likely that dwarves live in a work-or-you-don't-eat society. Up until then, she would have had to have had work lest she die, likely something far different. Did you ever piece that together, or did you only just put her together while writing? You also used an ableist slur to describe her.

If this was meant to hold a gritty way of saying rape is wrong, then you did not reach its full potential. It only came at the very end. This kind of work is by no means original, even with men as protagonists. A number of white cisgender, heterosexual men have actually managed to convey the theme quite well from a male perspective (while seeking help from women on their work to make it accurate). Even other fan works have done it better (I saw something on disneykink like this a long time ago that managed to portay the message of what was wrong with the protagonist without being ableist and held the rape is wrong message much better).

In terms of second point of view perspective, it ultimately seemed to work against the "feminist" message. (This is not to imply anything against the second person point of view as it can be quite enjoyable, and it has been used in works to show that abuse is wrong in other forms)."

This was posted on Only Her Sonorous Jewels by Hlessi, a Hobbit au that uses the second person well and is purposefully written like a dark fairy tale.

Reading this all I could think is, what an asshole.

JFC that was awful. I'm hoping that's anon or some throwaway account and not, y'know, anyone respected. And here I was feeling sorry for my own "rape is terrible and should never ever ever be written about, especially not fetishized!!!" haters.

...or you could stop policing other people's fic???

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you on the domino effect. For me it's not even something about fic being problematic, but it's soo, soooooo obvious how fanfic influences the imagination of fans in rp.

Really, 95% of all (OOC or not) trends I used to notice on chat or paragraph based rps were entirely ripped off fanfic, to the point that it's becoming a second canon.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
That's just a dislike of fanon=canon trend which certain psychos are pushing, but no reason to tell fanfic writers to stop writing the tropes they want to write. You should just find other RP partners if you don't like their style or actively tell potential RP partners that you've very pro-canon, etc.

Really, this whole thing reeks of "stop liking what I don't like".

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Pearl-clutching over people's problematic kinks is never needed, particularly if said kinks are warned for.

If they aren't, then by all means ask (ask, not demand) for a label to be slapped on the fic, but it's still not your solemn duty to fuss at other people for liking what you don't like.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed your secret and feel very similarly, OP. And don't worry, there are a lot of people out there who understand exactly where you're coming from. Basically any time I talk to my friends who aren't heavily into fandom about some of fandom's more disturbing tropes (romanticized rape, etc.) every single one of them basically responds the same way: "Wait, people are being praised for writing that and posting it on a public forum? Wow, that's messed up." And my friends aren't conservative, nor are they overly young or naive. The way fandom, as a general whole, seems to lean on this issue at the moment is just really, really biased and reactionary.

Back in 1996 we had fanfic writers who would actively shame other fanfic writers for writing smut at all. Now we have this. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hi, OP! You should get a tumblr. I'm sure you'll feel at home with the so many people there who believe the right thing to do is harassing and doxxing people for writing/drawing something that isn't perfectly PC and harmless.

Keep enjoying your inability of distinguish reality and fiction if that's what make you happy!
