That being said, popular pairings are usually popular for a REASON.

I'll happily admit that Ed and Roy have a particular chemistry in their interaction. But every time I see a Roy/Ed fan - and yes, the huge ones, the mature ones, THOSE WHO AREN'T STUPID FANGURLS INTO IT FOR THE BUTTZEX - talk about the SUBTEXT--- yeah, that is when I stop taking them seriously. Maybe if Clamp had written the series, but FMA is about as shounen as it gets.

There's a reason Harry/Hermione was so huge: because she was the closest girl at hand, never mind that he showed far more interst in other women. As far as I can tell, the popularity of Roy/Ed has more to do with them being more or less the only central guys who are good looking, and not related or married. Waaaay too much fluff around for people to be taking every fucked up aspect of the relationship seriously, no matter how much they claim they were attracted to the "psychological" aspects.

27. I'm not sure when that book was written, but it wasn't unusual in the 19th and early 20th centuries for an author writing in English to stick random untranslated French into their books. It always bothered me, though -- fandom quite aside -- because, well, I don't speak French. Which I suspect is half the problem with fangirl Japanese, too (the other half being that the fangirls tend to get it wrong).

I'm just wondering how a shipwar would work for this show. Like, what would anyone have to fight over*? The only time I can imagine it affecting anything at all is in criminally AU fics where he ends up alive and with one or the other. And frankly, anyone who writes ST fix-its is already Not Getting It about as badly as the morons who edited Into the Woods into a "child-friendly" version that stops at the end of the first act.

*I mean, besides the obvious, "They're fucking, right? Yes? No? 'Rumpled bedding,' right?" Because that argument can only go around so many times.

I think each season is kind of letting us know more little by little.
