Review/Analysis of DS9's "Tribunal"

O'Brien goes on trial, we see the Cardassian justice system in action (or inaction, depending on how you want to look at it), and Odo kind of turns into Phoenix Wright.

TW suicidal thoughts...sort of?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I just went to the kitchen to get a glass of water, and while there I thought "I really should go to bed, but I'm not tired at all. Maybe I should take a melatonin to help. Maybe I should take the whole bottle."

And that last thought wasn't even so much a thought as this visual/feeling combo of me taking them all and being able to sleep forever. And it was such a wonderful feeling for a fleeting second before I sort of caught up with myself and was like "wtf was that?" And then left the kitchen and here I am.

Does anyone else ever have little thoughts like this? These vague intrusive thoughts about self harm or the like? It doesn't happen often, but it's happened before.

Jobs/Job Searching

(Anonymous) 2017-05-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I am getting more and more done with my current job. It's low paying and completely menial. im in my late 20s with a degree and I work with high schoolers. The ones I work with are lovely and fine at their job, but it's just so embarrassing.

I try to job search every night but I get so discouraged because I will find maybe 5-6 jobs a week that I am halfway qualified for. I put in a ton of time and effort into my resume and cover letter, but never hear anything back. Than I don't even want to job search anymore because I would rather spend the few hours I have from work doing something that makes me happy instead of something that makes me miserable.

I almost in tears typing this out because of how frustrated and depressed I am over it.

What the heck are you supposed to actually do when you get trapped in the valley of negative self-talk

in all seriousness, though, it's incredibly difficult for me to sustain an even remotely positive self-conception without sinking into a morass of thoughts about being fundamentally weird and grotesque, and it really sucks, and I'm really getting tired of it

Book club - April discussion, day 3 of 3

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-05-03 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hey book club! Welcome to the third and final day of the April discussion!

Yesterday was fairly slow, but it's probably because I was unable to repost my initial thoughts and discussion question. I apologize for that. I have wifi in my new place now! And don't have to leave again today to do any errands (or be late getting back from work)!

Here is a link to Sunday's discussion, which had actually really nice turnout: http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/1606053.html?thread=957611173#cmt957611173

Here's a link to yesterday's: http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/1606411.html?thread=957744395#cmt957744395 (also, nonny, due to aforementioned lack of wifi I didn't watch the vid you posted because I didn't want to suck up data, but I will go watch it now!)

I'll post my thoughts on Night Watch and my discussion questions as a response to this comment. Feel free to comment anything you'd like to share :)

Also, as a quick reminder, we are reading Dragon Wizard by S. Andrew Swann for May! Expect June recs to start sometime this week! :)

my thoughts

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-05-03 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
This is the first book I have read in the Discworld series. I've been wanting to check out Discworld for some time, so this was a good push for me. I like fantasy in general, especially inventive fantasy with elements from other genres, and unique settings that combine different elements. I also like time shenanigans and a variety of interesting characters, so I really enjoyed Night Watch.

I understand some things may be perceived differently by someone who has read other Discworld books, especially other ones centered around Ankh-Morpork, Sam Vimes or the Watch, but I didn't have any trouble following this book (once I got a handle on the actual time shenanigans) so I think it was fine as an intro book to the series.

The writing itself varied a little to me. There were a few places it felt a little awkward, and many other places it was rather funny. I got a sense that Pratchett's voice, while definitely unique, was maybe in a few places trying a little hard to be unique, which resulted in some awkwardness. But that didn't overshadow the book at all for me, and my perception of that may change as I read more Discworld.

I had a hard time deciding if Vimes or Vetinari was my favorite character. I hope more books centered on Ankh-Morpork explore Vetinari's character more, especially since we see on one hand the slightly outcast but very skilled assassin and thirty years later, the city's Patrician (and apparently not corrupt in the way his predecessors were). I enjoyed all the sections that were focused on Vetinari, especially "Dog-Botherer" and "I am practicing standing sill".

Carcer was a pretty good villain because he fucks with your head. He's not just a stabby guy who runs and hides. He may or may not be somewhat insane and acts like whoever arrests him is a big meanie, what did poor Carcer do? He knew just how to get under Vimes' skin, and it was immensely satisfying to see him finally defeated.

There was a lot that wasn't really clear to me. The time shenanigans were also like, time-and-alternate-universe shenanigans? Or Vimes actually went and changed history in his own universe? He couldn't fix the things he wanted to the most, preventing the deaths of the young Watchmen, but he changed *how* some of them died, including Keel. What was really unclear to me was whether Keel was actually his own person, or was Vimes even in the original incarnation of events.

Some of the characters I want to explore more in other books centered on the city include Sweeper, Miss Palm and the Aunts. The Aunts were especially interesting - what exactly are they? Are they human?

some questions

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-05-03 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
1. What did you think of the overall writing?

2. What did you think of the worldbuilding and the atmosphere created of past and present Ankh-Morpork?

3. What did you think of the characters? Who were your favorites? Any you didn't like? Who was the most interesting? Who was most endearing?

4. How did Carcer hold up to you as a villain?

5. How did you expect the story to end? Did you expect history to be changed? Did you expect to see more of the political climate between the past and present? (I hope another book goes into this!)

6. If you have read other books by Pratchett, how do you think Night Watch holds up to them and why?

7. Do you think Vimes did the right thing - commandeering the Watch, invading the Unmentionables, building the barricade, etc. - or was there something you think he should have done differently? Do you think he was doing most of that because "it already happened" or because he wanted to? Do you think "it already happened" is a good reason (i.e. would history have become unraveled, or Sam never gotten home)?

8. Do you have any favorite funny or interesting lines/passages?

9. Any questions you would like to ask? :)
