Never has this icon been more appropriate. Also I'm calling troll, but for the fun of it...

For those curious as to WHY someone would have issues with Catholicism I offer you the following information.

A lot of this hate stems from Protestant sects and other Christian sects (most notably Baptists) where they are convinced the Pope has ultimate control over all adherents to Catholicism. One particuarily amusing Chick tract illustrates this point quite well, suggesting that since the Pope is not only a religious figure but also as head of state of the Vatican City, any citizen of a country who is also a Catholic would obviously pick loyalty to the Pope over their country. You get the idea.

Let's face it. Catholicism has been parent to a lot of bad rap over the years, looking at things like wiping out various other religions, the Crusades (most horridly the Cathar Crusades, in my own opinion), the Inquisition and so on and so forth. So, if the OP is an atheist, you can understand why an opinion such as this would form.

Now the idea that religion = fiction is full of fail for several reasons. Most books in the Hebrew Bible and Bible itself are pseudo-historical and not the only books representative of this style. Traditionally biographies of people in the ancient world were highly embellished to make the subject look godly. Go take a look at any of the four canonical gospels (heck or the non canonical ones!) and compare it to a contemporary biography of a Roman Emperor. Chances are the information is going to be biased in order to show case the subject's virtue and other admirable qualities It's called a hagiography and has been common for ages and ages.

Finally, from personal experience, I've found that Catholics are usually not totally die-hard stick to canon of all the Christian sects out there. Many of them disagree with Vatican opinions on abortion, homosexuality etc. So seriously OP, you are full of fail. Try actually reading about religion and religious studies before making a judgment like that.

Love
-A Deist

70, please go shake hands with 49.

People can believe whatever they want, as long as they don't hurt anyone. Scientology abuses people and brainwashes people and was created by a mad man who thought he fell through space onto Venus and got hit by a space train....and that he was an epic space walrus who fell from the moon and exploded on impact. Yeah. I'm not making this up.

I don't care if you believe in a giant green panda bear that gives everyone candy on various nights of the year...just don't hurt people.

Scientology != any other religion

15 While I understand what your point was on this, I think your idea of warped is as defined by you, and not as defined by the definition of warped. It's kind of an insult to people who liked that stuff before fandom, but eh, that's why it's a secret, eh?

28 Cause self-hating means stupid, right folks? Can't be smart and discerning when you're busy thinking you're unlovable/ugly/crap at doing anything (and yes, depression actually does warp one's perspective to the negative, so it's not THAT horrible an assumption... but still, ugh). Not that the material point you're trying to make here wouldn't make an interesting argument, but I always call FAIL on argument setups that link two things as though they're fact and go from there (see #15). However, looking at part 2, I think what you're trying to say is going to fly over people's heads/read 'wrong' (ie. other than you intended)/get lost in the sentence structure.

I think you're trying to say that self-hating women find it hard to form their own opinions, so they listen to those you term fandom feminists and end up even more messed up to the point where they're a self-fulfilling prophecy?

It strikes me that this is a really safe secret to make because you're not admitting to which arguments you think are distorted other than a vague reference to misogyny. So, is this just up to cause wank?

32 Word.

33 Seriously! Some of them look interesting in a 'this might not already be a train wreck' sort of way, but I can't figure out what they're from!

Snap.

The thing that irks is that when you're in a fandom for a while you tend to start recognising people's writing styles anyway, so if you've got a brain you should be able to figure 80% of the peeps without any of them saying "MINE MINE MINE".

[Though the last anon meme I wrote in? Someone yipped up and claimed my porn as theirs. The reason why they did that still fucking eludes; in the world of pointless and petty steals, it's right up there with icon theft - short of trying to piss off the person who made it, WTF is the point?]

Good to know. Thank you all, maybe it doesn't have to stay a secret now. I was so relieved to find a great solid comic adaption (besides Hellboy, which i loved, but it didn't have to worry about the same thing mainstream comic adapts have to.)

Speaking of the gorgeous Tony Stark, I've seen every comic to screen adapt I could, and he's the hottest guy to star in one yet.

22. As someone who's actually read the source material...I prefer the movie. It's just more fun. Alan Moore...his stuff's usually hit or miss with me, but it always feels like it just has to be gritty and disturbing. That's cool. Makes for some truly amazing work. But in the end, I prefer wacky hijinks from famous literary characters in a somewhat ridiculous action-adventure movie to...well, the comics. Plus, Skinner>Griffin or whatever the original's name was.

24. I'm furious because by Silver Chair, it's clear that Caspian has a (very chaste, sweet) crush on Lucy. BECAUSE HE'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THAT OLD! He should be maybe a year older than Edmund.

37. Nuuuuuuuuuu! I dunno, it would squick me. Charlie was like kid-brother or something. Plus, Charlie grows up to be a jerk. Granted, it's better than Bernard/Curtis. That's just disturbing. I'd rather have an OC show up for some Bernard romancing, if it must be, but then all the OC's are sparkly-but-sassy Mary Sues.
...and heaven help me, I still read through them. And the slash...

43. Wow. Way to lose. I mean, I totally lose respect for people who enjoy watching a well-written, funny show that has better continuity and world-building than most "adult" fandoms. All-ages means just that. It does not mean "for childrens only."

44. D'aw....Kenshin!

50. I don't think I ship them, but I think they'd be a brOTP of sorts with me. I never thjought of shipping them, but now... Darn it, nameless guy was just so cute and quitely supportive. He might have a name. Maybe in the credits?

66. Well, I started listening to Blues so I could write an original character (not for ff) better, but no one knocks blues. But I have started listening to country and bluegrass, and for that, I blame fandom, in a very very roundabout way.
Lol, though. I think your secret's pretty cool.

70. OH, SERIOUSLY, SHUT UP. IF A PERSON WANTS TO BELIEVE IN A RELIGION, LET THEM AND DON'T HATE THEM BECAUSE OF IT. I SWEAR, I CANNOT STAND ANYMORE OF THIS RELIGIOUS WAR THING. Sure, religious people have done a lot of bad, but so has non-believers, yet you don't see me hating an entire people! You know who was one of the main targets for the Nazis durring WW2? Not just Jews, but priests and other holy people! So discrimination can happen on both sides. Now Catholicism has not been the nicest religion in the world, especially to my religion Judaism, not to mention the Muslim Moors, but you can't blame all catholics for the doings of a few. A large portion of my friends are Catholic and *gasp* somehow I am still alive! OMfG. (That was the most pathetic rant EVER but I'm tired.)

I thought it was a good rant. Your last bit made me giggle. My best friend at college was Jewish (I'm Catholic), and our various backgrounds provided no end of amusements. For one, we'd debate who's family was better at making them feel guilty. (I thought I won until he had to move back home...)

But yeah, the oppression thing...we don't do that anymore. ^_^
