I'm perfectly fine with you hating the game (well, okay, hate is a freaking strong word to express toward a fiction-based video game, but whatever). People dislike things and I'm not one to really question that.

But don't take your hate out on the fans, man. :( Not all of use are stupid sheep that only play the game because it's pretty/has "good looking" characters. I got into the series because my friend lent me the first game back after it first came out.

And the second game also helped me through a time of severe depression because it put out a powerful message that, even though sometimes times are tough, you need to learn to take things in stride and smile a little (cry moar, I know). There's more to it than just good-looking characters. So to lump those of us who enjoy the game for different reasons isn't really fair.

Again, you can dislike things, but to lose respect for someone who likes something you really dislike is rather harsh. I can understand, though, because the crazy fans who only play it for its characters and squeal over such kinda grate on my nerves, but whatever, to each their own, right?

Who's to say that she can't tell fact from fiction? Certainly not you. Religion is different- you can't just callously say, "Oh, she's Catholic? Why can't she see that she believes in bullshit?! Poor Freema..." Not all Catholics are Literalists. Nor can you just say that religion is simply fiction. Sure, you can't prove that any of it happened (boo-hoo to all the people who choke the mystery from life), but there is a human force behind it that differentiates it from the normal experience.
Besides, think of the alternatives: she could be a Scientologist, God forbid.

Unfortunately, I can't seperate things out too well. So if I do read the comic, I'll ruin the movie for myself because instead of kicking back and enjoying the cheese, I'll be listing all the differences instead.

Given a movie I love and a comic I might enjoy or might not, I'll stick to the movie. :-\

30. Whoa. They look like they could be brothers. That's kind of neat. I know Barrowman's roots are Scottish. What are Cruise's? Is he Scottish or Irish? They may have a common ancestor.

39. I LOVE THAT MOVIE! Both of them were such great characters. (See, Hollywood, you can have interesting female characters that aren't hookers or cancer patients.) And, yes, I cried when Oscar died in his own church. What a horrible way to go.

40. All the Iron Man love. I am actually pleasently surprised that it is doing so well overseas. Sure, there's RDJ's amazing performance. But the movie is so American. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Yank, here.

But if you think about it, outside of Captain America no other superhero is so American. Batman/Bruce Wayne is product of his childhood. Peter Parker/Spider-Man is a product of his class. The X-Men were products of the world's fear.

Bruce Wayne could have been born in London and you would have had still the same result. Toss Peter Parker in Toronto and not much a difference would change. Heck, you toss Peter Parker in Tokyo and still get the same guy. But Tony Stark? Only America could have given birth to Tony Stark.

I would love to hear why people overseas love this movie. Especially since the TV news, magazines and newspaper tell us that we, Americans, aren't on everyone's fave list.

43, Just because of that, I am watching the first two seasons of Avatar right now.

70. Freema's Catholic? Hey, one for our team. Yeah!

And, oh, yeah, boo hoo, I can't handle that people think differently from me. Boo hoo.

Grow up.

I think I agree, but I'd like to hear more. I'm not disagreeing I'm actually just really curious now. :) I'm also a yank and it's about time we have a hero that isn't embarrassing and completely just ours.

Sometimes quality is enough I guess. Tony is admirable even if he's American. I know a Brit online who raved of the effects, the acting and just overall coherently good film. All is not lost it seems!

43. I feel that way about Sponge Bob. ( Well, I don't lose respect for them. I just smile, chuckle, and shake my head. )

The first episode of Avatar I had ever seen was pretty dark. When I realized I had stopped on Nickelodeon, I seriously was like "WTF? Why is a show like this one a this channel?"

There is a lot of interesting themes and twists in the show that would appeal to an older crowd. The world is amazing and I enjoy the concept. I'm also a 2D whore and love the artwork and finally?

The kids are actually selfish little brats like they should be. I get sick of watching movies or cartoons, even if they are aimed towards my age group and above, and watch all these little kids be so selfless, perfect, and brave. These kids actually ARE childish sometimes and that makes them seem more real than others in movies or television shows you might feel are more "appropriate" for the 20-something crowd.

Re: 43.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-05-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! You nailed all the reasons I like the show, but especially because the children are actual people. Aang can be all serene and monk-like, but the next second, he's a twelve-year-old boy, being a typical twelve-year-old boy. All of the main characters have such rounded, realistic personalities!

And oh man, the animation is drool-worthy. I mean, the fight scenes, the dance scene (I spazed that they actually remembered that--hey, people sweat when they dance!), the body language. Gorgeous!

Too bad we can't like it to be taken seriously by 43 OP...

45. Is this...a Pokemon Special secret??! Holy shit; I can honestly say I never expected to see a secret for that (not that I'm complaining). I love the manga and think it's so much better than the TV show (why couldn't they have animated Special instead?). Do you happen to know if there are any forums/LJ communities/etc.?

52. It's alright; I thought it was sad too. Especially when Mai went to visit her friend's daughter and found out what happened to the mom and blamed herself.

This is kind of off topic, but did you understand the ending? During the whole series they were looking for the blonde girl, but when they found her they decided to keep traveling anyway (after a brief but sad hiatus). I'm not sure if they said why they needed to keep traveling, but then again it was a while since I've seen the show.

15. I blame it more on the internet as a whole than on fandom. I was corrupted long before fandom came along.

17. RUKIHIME FUCK YEAH :D

18. I like Thirteen because there's none of that hinty shippy UST crap for her and House like there was for House and Cameron. (Actually, I like Cameron better now that they've gone and totally ditched the whole H/Cam schtick, too. And I totally don't get this "Thirteen is a Cameron clone" thing, either.)

25. Dude. You have to see the other ones first, because there are so many nods to the rest of 'em and it just makes it so much more enjoyable D:

36. Creepy Rei fanboys suck :(

43. B'AWWWWWW. Heaven forbid adults enjoy a cartoon with plot instead of, oh, I dunno, watching drivel like Family Guy that's actually aimed at their age group. (And I don't even watch Avatar.)

52. On the Grave of the Fireflies thing? ME NEITHER.

61. I know who you are.

70. ...you're joking, right?

N!S 5. It isn't.

30. What really gets me is that I knew someone in high school who has more than a passing resemblance to both and it's freaked me out for years with Cruise and now it freaks me out with Barrowman.

40. I'm wild for both! I mean, BB was awesome and had Alfred and was a really great take on his origin. IM was possibly the best comic book movie I've ever seen. And now I'd love to see some crossover badassedness.

I've been dreaming of any kind of comic to movie crossover forever. It's part of what comics do!

27 - I seriously don't get losing "all respect" for someone based on one thing. Maybe not trusting their gaming tastes, but "all respect"?

28 - ...honestly, I hear a lot more misogyny in fandom than I do people calling anything to do with fandom misogynist.

29 - That's what the internet is for! :D

41 - ...I don't see how that is a secret.

43 - I don't think there's anything wrong with liking kid's shows. It'd be a little weird if ALL you liked was kid stuff, but it doesn't mean that you're immature.

70 - A) Saying one is Catholic or Baptist or whatever, often refers to culture rather than what one actually believes.
B) Being a person of faith does not make one anymore stupid/ignorant/close-minded/naive than an atheist or an agnostic. (This almost seems troll-like.)

As a former Catholic, I must respectfully say, "...huh?"

I'd like to know how you came to this conclusion.

70) Your ignorance is showing. Trust me, it ain't pretty.

Go get an actual education, alright?

n!f:1) Uh...if this has anything to do with me, uh, sorry?

12. I prefer 8059 to 5927 largely because it feels so much more like a relationship of equals to me. Gokudera's Tsuna-worship just...idk. It's not to say I've never shipped something with a power imbalance before (because lol, I ship 6996 like mad), but with those two specifically it just really does nothing for me. :X

43. k, so what happens when they turn 15?

15. Um, thanks for your pity. WTF?

30. ...No. No, you're not. O_O THAT'S why Barrowman looks familiar. D:

43. Wow, you're dumb.

54. That is awesome.

70. You're even dumber than 43. Congrats!
