Review/Analysis of DS9's "The Sword of Kahless"

[identity profile] tv-366.blogspot.com 2017-06-07 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
DS9 takes a break from Sci-fi to go down the fantasy path, with a quest for a legendary item. And while it's not cursed, it might as well be, given how it affects everybody who comes close to it.

Yes, but months after release. I've got two pricey figures on PO in October (shortly before game release) and March (a few months after) so I'm going to be low on cash during that time. I'm not really fussed though. I used to be super into Pokemon and while I still love it, my time of being an 'omg must avoid spoilers and get it at release night!!'-type fan are over.

Never seen that before

[personal profile] el_regrs 2017-06-06 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
What's something you've never seen before today? This week? This month? Or even this year?

Today I saw a tow truck transporting a big yellow school bus.

Then I came home and found two earthworms fucking on the sidewalk.

Ideal Dream Vacation

(Anonymous) 2017-06-06 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
If you could go vacation anywhere right now, with cost as no object, where would you go?

Try to limit it to like... 3 places that are reasonably close to each other, maybe? Or not. Do as you like, really.

What video game did you never complete that you actually WANTED to complete?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-06 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Why didn't you finish it?

Squirrels

(Anonymous) 2017-06-07 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
They are basically the monkeys of the Northern Hemisphere, right? I mean squirrels are, in Europe and North America, occupying the ecological niche monkeys would fill. That is why we have no monkeys in Europe and NA, isn't it? Man, I wish we had monkey species in the UK though. Can't even release some macaques or geladas in this country without the RSPCA and cops kicking up a fuss. Hell, can't even release native species like Pine Martens on Primrose Hill without almost getting arrested. Thank god the Met are still easily bribed.

Adaptations and changes that annoys you

(Anonymous) 2017-06-07 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
That conflicted feeling when you're annoyed that the movie adaptation changes the POV character/protagonist from a bumbling loser to a "stick-up-their-ass" bureaucrat and you can't be mad because it's the comic creator himself and his buddy doing the changes. Bonus points for the fact that I haven't actually read the graphic novel, only seen panels here and there. Protagonist is still going to be that stupid sexy demon. No clue yet if he'll get the wings, though.

This little venting brought to you by Zombillenium and the change from cute loser Aurelian Zahner with the fluffy sideburns, to stuffy standards controler and single dad Hector Sachs. I'm still excited for the movie, though and will see it as soon as it comes out.

When you find yourself having second thoughts about making a baked potato for dinner because it might be tantamount to selling your lover's soul to the devil, one or more of the following must be true:
1. You read too much fanfic.
2. The fanfic you read is too weird.
3. Your fandoms are too weird.

Now taking recs for July!

Rules:

1. Limit 2 per customer
2. Limit 15 total
3. You must list the title and the author
4. You must list a link to the book's page on either Amazon or Goodreads! This is to weed out troll recs and prove that the book a) actually exits and b) is at least reasonable accessible. I will not include books that are $125 a copy, have 12 copies in the entire world, or aren't actually books.

List of books we've read so far:

April 2016: Who Censored Roger Rabbit by Gary K. Wolf
May 2016: Maurice by E. M. Forster
June: Dragon Thief by S. Andrew Swann
July: Para Handy by Neil Munro
August: His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
September: Graceling by Kristen Cashore
October: Dracula by Bram Stoker
November: Watership Down by Richard Adams
January: Practical Demonkeeping by Christopher Moore
February: It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis
March: The Iron Heel by Jack London
April: Night Watch by Terry Pratchett
May: Dragon Wizard by S. Andrew Swann
June (current book): Joust by Mercedes Lackey

List of recs we have so far:

Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
Ring of Bright Water by Gavin Maxwell
The Passenger by Lisa Lutz
Idyll Threats, by Stephanie Gayle
Strong Poison by Dorothy Sayers*
Vamped by David Sosnowski
House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski
Zeus Grants Stupid Wishes: a No-Bullshit Guide to World Mythology by Cory O'Brien
The Fifth Season, by NK Jemisin
Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman

*anon, can I please have a link to Amazon, Goodreads, or another site that confirms this book's availability? Thank you!

Recs will stay open either a) until Friday or b) until we have 15 recs, whichever comes first.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-06 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's a quick Amazon link for the Sayers (there's also a free digital version somewhere but I'm too lazy to track it down right now):

https://www.amazon.com/Strong-Poison-Dorothy-L-Sayers/dp/0062196200/

BUT ALSO I wanted to get peoples' opinions (if anyone cares) on whether it would be better to do Strong Poison or Gaudy Night by Sayers. I went with Strong Poison cause it's earlier in the series, but I can see really good reasons for doing Gaudy Night as well. Does anyone have any feelings about this? Please reply. They're equally available to read, so no worries there.

I'm seeing the No-Bullshit Guide or Ring of Bright Water standing out as nicely different candidates for me. Maybe more Ring of Bright Water, since it is further away from the fantasy thing. Ring of Bright Water is a movie too, so we can discuss differences to that maybe too.
