154. 100% agree. I think the reason why they were portrayed as lesbians in the anime was solely for symbolism and symbolism only. But as for the theme of the show, you're right. Utena and Anthy do not need to be lovers to be happy- having them be in a sexual relationship defeats the purpose. I don't mind the so-called "canon" of their relationship, I just think it's kind of unneccessary, and the anime totally only built up their relationship on a friendship level with lesbian INNUENDO only.
Although I'm kind of a closet MikixAnthy fan, which makes me a total hypocrite.

The "Watson was a woman" is actually a well known theory in the Sherlock Holmes fandom; Rex Stout postulated it at a Baker Street Irregulars meeting back in 1941 (and don't you love it when your fandom predates not only the internet, but also television?) in a rather jesting tone.

Though I figure: who needs to make Watson a woman? Holmes and Watson had a very deep relationship which encompassed loyalty, hero worship and love (feel free to speculate what type of love - many have) and was wonderfully fascinating in and of itself.

I thought of the Rex Stout quote the second I saw the secret. Although in some cases I fear it's a form of self-insertion.

Short shameful confession: after I first saw Star Wars I thought Chewbacca was a female Wookiee. ("She" wasn't pretty or graceful, but had adventures and rescued people instead of needing to be rescued. This undoubtedly was a reflection of my self-image. then and now.)

142: Both Kaiji and Akagi are kind of hit-or-miss, particularly with the art style (Endou's eyebrows alone give small children nightmares.). I remember when I started reading one of them thinking "What the shit is wrong with this art? Is this really what everyone's raving about?"

I eventually warmed up to it and ended up loving both and embracing the weird-ass art (and leafing around for more works from the same person), but I can definitely see where you're coming from. And yes, Kaiji is indeed a very frustrating character.

Maybe I'm no better, though... because all I've ever read is Hellbound Heart, Imajica, and the Books of Blood.

Mostly because, if you ask me, the three you mentioned are infinitely superior to Abarat, which I was probably too old to fully enjoy when I read it. Or something. I just didn't like it as much as Barker's other work.
