I do something similar to that, where I take Hollywood actors and "cast" them in roles like I were making a movie of whatever book I was reading - it helped a whole lot with envisioning characters. And I did it through college (Keira Knightly in a re-make of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, please!) - I still do it sometimes today.

154. In the series Anthy needed someone to FREE her, to show her there was more to life than being the Rose Bride and playing along as a pawn in her brother's game. She had been used for years and Utena was finally the person who freed her from that. It can obviously be connected with sexuality but the larger theme of personal identity is also important in that series - through her (friendship, relationship, whatever) with Utena she understands there is more in the world for her than being the Rose Bride. (I never liked the concept of the movie, Anthy was way too randomly psychotic in it for my taste.) /Cultural Studies essay lol

148. Hear, hear. I'm asexual, too, and I never say "I'd hit it" for the exact same reason. When I love a character (but not in a hit-it way, eww), I generally say how awesome the character is and how much I love the character, because almost no-one assumes that "I love character X" immediately and irrevocably means "I'd hit it." But I know the fix you're in. It does kind of suck.

150. It's there. You're more likely to find Jesus/Judas, I think, but it's out there. And I would jump on it in a heartbeat if it were thoughtful and well-written. Unfortunately, even Bible fanfic suffers from a large amount of bad writers, just like practically every other fandom. Sigh.

While I do enjoy Abarat, it is on a totally different scale than most of his stuff - especially when compared to works like Imajica, Hellbound Heart, Weaveworld, even Galilee. The people who write fanfics for Abarat probably aren't really the type to write fanfics for the others (in fact, I'd be surprised if they've even read the works).

I've tried my hand at a few Imajica fanfics but I'm too worried about not doing justice to the original to really write fanfics for any of his stuff. They're just all too good.

The point with Anthy is that by the end of the anime she can choose what to do herself. She is no longer an object to be won, but her own person, someone who can pursue whatever she wants; it might be a relationship with Utena, it might not. It doesn't matter. It's that she now controls her own future that matters.

173: I'm still wondering what's so cheapening about sex. Sure, it could be - but in each and every one of these secrets it's between characters who care deeply for each other. I've got the impression that a frightening amount of people have a very unhealthy view of sex and sexuality.

Not the OP, but that's kind of how I feel about people who want every character they see on TV to be a role model of proper behaviour. Did the Comics Code work? Did teaching children (of all ages, lol) that CRIME DOES NOT PAY stop any criminals? Has sanitising cartoons of violence made our culture less violent? How do we compare to Japan, where the animation for all ages is pretty graphic and all of it has to be cut to meet US standards?

The OP is right. Good fiction and art reflects the society that produced it. Societies do not change because people take all the scary evil shit off TV and out of books. They change because these things are shown for what they truly are, not just in a way where someone always comes along to show the one doing wrong the error of their ways (i.e. "gets called on it").

I don't even think Dean is a misogynist, but that's neither here nor there. It will be artistically inappropriate for Dean to say "bitch" when we live in a world where guys who look and dress and talk like Dean don't usually say "bitch". I would not mind living in that world, but I don't want TV to tell me we do when we actually don't. The racist words that are currently not acceptable on TV are not unacceptable because someone decided "OMG we'd better not have racist people on TV!" They are unacceptable because people in our society do not in fact routinely say those words in public places and are pretty much uniformly offended by hearing them.

154. IMO, Utena&Anthy's relationship isn't sexual OR purely platonic, it's called a romantic friendship which was pretty popular in the Victorian era. They have comfort levels beyond "friends" but not all the intimacy of "lovers." And besides? Romantic love =/= sexual object. Nobody loved Anthy before Utena, so if they, in the future CHOSE or not become lovers? Doesn't mean anything wrong. Anthy needed to learn to take care of her own life, including being LOVED.
