122) One of my biggest turn ons is genderswitch (especially unwanted genderswitch) so you aren't alone. I'm curious about this book!

128) We don't remember who you are. Unless you want to remind us by starting another wank.

130) Hey, no prob, fandom won't miss you.

134) I think people who find this series sexist will never find a show that fully lives up to their feminist ideals.

149) To be completely fair, Ed does grow a couple of centimeters during the course of the show/manga. But not enough to shed his "short" label. And it's totally silly to be surprised that Fandom calls him short when Arakawa makes such a big deal about his shortness in canon. It's like being perplexed that Sauron is considered "evil." OMG.

157) You can't find any good recent anime, but it also doesn't sound like you are actually looking for any either. Especially since you choose not to even try anime that other people like. But for what it's worth, I happen to like several of the series you say you do, and I also love Le Chevalier d'Eon, which has, as far as I've been able to tell, no fandom whatsoever.

159) Believe it or not, people are allowed to enjoy more than one artist. If you have talent, you will be liked even if there is someone else in your fandom also doing art. I can tell from this that you don't have the right emotional temperament for contests, so don't enter them, and just enjoy fandom for the wondrous non-competitive lovefest it can be.

OP 159

(Anonymous) 2008-06-17 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I know, I'm normally not that bitter, that's why I was ashamed enough to make it a secret. I must admit, though, jumping into posting my art soon after someone else makes me not only worry that I'll be overlooked, but also that I'll somehow be looked at as inferior at the same time. It's not even about the contest, it's about my crappy self esteem.
In all honesty, large parts of almost all of her pieces are GREAT...just...certain body parts always look wonky to me. But fuck, who gave ME the right to be judgemental?? Seriously, I'll deserve it if people hate my work. >_

...is epic fail. Srsly, BSG is only sexist towards the dudes. The women are all smart, strong and independent, while the men are buried in character flaws.

102 I refuse to call Kaze to ki no uta BL; "shonen-ai" and "BL" are seperated by history, theme, background, target audience, and intent, among other things.

134 I think it's pretty blatant that all the female cylons are young and hot while the male ones are allowed to be old, ugly, fat, and creepy. *shrug*

156 OH YES. HOT. I like Goldblum in general, but especially as Raines. Mmmmmm.

119. Eh, so long as you're playing/willing to play other megaten games, you're as much of a megaten fan as anyone else. Frankly I don't think everyone should be required by decree to download the SMTI/II emulators and play through the fan translations just to participate. (Besides, I bet you half of those "elitists" haven't either - one of the only reasons I did was to get all of the original game references in DS:RK.)

I'm just glad you're playing them over the "ooh shiny graphics" of FF or "boys kissing!!!111" of KH :3. If my flist is to be believed, KH is about some guy named Axel humping some other guy named Roxas, and not much else. Always good to see another megaten fan.

129. I haven't watched Doctor Who either, and I would be more interested in a female Doctor, simply because the number of sci-fi shows that have a female protagonist are vastly outstripped by those with a male one. And generally those few with a female protagonist make said protagonist being ZOMG TEH HAWT the central theme of her character. But according to what the fans of the show have said here, that can't happen. Ah well. It's a pity.

134. You kidding me? This show pissed all of its intellectual credibility down the drain the moment cylons began listening to 60s acid rock in space. I still watch it, of course ;p

126

[identity profile] shobogan.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, not necessarily. One of the best things about Who is that most anything can happen.

The other main characters are often female though, and often kick ass, even if it's the Doctor's show first and foremost.

I would love a female Doctor, though, just for the potential; there have been some wonderful stories exploring the idea.

121. GAWD. It was really depressing, yes, but it didn't ruin Ouran for me. It does take some of the sheen off of happy!japan, though.

146. I cried way too hard... waywayway :\ Especially since it was a surprise and he's my #1 all-time favorite character out of any anime.

156. AGREED ♥ I've had a crush on since I was six lol!

[identity profile] simmy549.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
108: *tear*

124: I LOVE EVERYONE TOO! I HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH SEASON FOUR!!
WHERE IS THE LOVE, FANDOM? WHERE IS IT?

[identity profile] redrevelry.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
103. I'm religious, too, and while I haven't encountered anyone specific being mocked for their beliefs, I have seen a lot of mocking general religions. Like, "Oh, I bet all the people who hate series x are Christians, because they're so intolerant/homophobic." Way to paint us all with one brush, people. And then there are the people who mindlessly bash a character who is religious...

106. Haha, I empathize so much. I'm a straight girl, but I have crushes on several fictional female characters.

119. Who cares about the elitists? If you like P3, you're a fan of P3. As someone who has only played P3, I've seen this quite a bit in the SMT fandom and it's really ridiculous. It would be different if this was a series of games that had some continuity, but P3 is a stand alone game. And it's especially stupid for SMT games considering how rare they are. It's not like I can drive down to the nearest Gamestop and buy DDS or Nocturne.

162. I don't know how anyone couldn't realize this, especially if they've read Eclipse. It was pretty damn obvious in the first two books, but it's really spelled out in Eclipse. I love screwed up relationships like this, but it really bugs me that Meyer is presenting this as the ideal. Hell, even Jacob has some really creepy moments ("kiss me or I'll kill myself" WTF).

163. OH MY GOD THAT IS AMAZING. I need to get back on AC, but all the weeeeeeds... :( But when I do I shall PIERCE THE HEAVENS WITH MY SLINGSHOT and hopefully shoot down something suitably GAR in Kamina's honor.

168. A lot of people like characters that are manipulative assholes. Though I think a lot of fandom is warping him into the character they want him to be.

169. While I wouldn't laugh in his face, I don't think that makes you a horrible friend. That was entirely his fault. You tried to help him.

119

(Anonymous) 2008-06-16 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
They do reference each other quite a lot, P3 included (though most of the things in P3 are just drawing from the other Persona games). I do agree though that there's nothing wrong with someone being a fan of just one or two of the games. The only thing that annoys me is people thinking they know everything about the whole series because they played one game. Which is obviously not the case here.

I think a lot of the older fans are just being stupid because they feel like they aren't special anymore since P3 got popular. There was the same type of backlash when Nocturne came out stateside.

129. …Okay?

133. Well, I didn't baw, but it definitely moved me.

139: …That sounds a bit worrying, frankly.

140. Me either. I found him fun on Doctor Who, but any love I might have had is…pretty much gone, by now.

142: He's my least favourite, if that helps.

143: I would, too. Just not permanently.

162: NO. INSTANT, OBSESSIVE, ISOLATING LOVE IS PURE AND TRUE.

[identity profile] legit.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
119. Honestly I don't see why you should bother--play the games cause YOU want to, not because you feel pressured to. And this is coming from someone who used to go harping on P3 new people--it's just a game, err, rather a series of games. And really they're all equally good and awesome in my book ok, I'll be biased and say Nocturne is the most awesome because it's my first but really, don't let those 'eltists' get to you--some of them, really, really don't know what they're talking about either. So yeah tl;dr: fret not OP, we all started somewhere don't worry about what a few people think!

166. Uh have you seen the yaoi comm? It's rarer to find Shin/Sena then Hiru/Sena--infact, that's one of the more popular pairings...

[identity profile] creatore-magico.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
145. I hear you ;_; I am terrified to watch it too. I also have anxiety issues, and I am worried that it will be too smart for me. But also, that it will make me think too much and spiral into some kind of depression. But it look so good ;_; What do we do?!

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
103: Mm... I admit I get touchy when people say "I'm Christian", but I've never noticed anywhere in fandom where someone might have their throats ripped out for it (metaphorically speaking). Honestly, religion just doesn't come up is most of my fandom activities much except when someone is crusading. I get touchy because 9:10 times, the person who says it immediately follows up with some Christian-based opinion that they expect me to agree with (because doesn't everyone believe in the Bible?) and it's awkwakrd to tell them that I disagree, because then they jump down my throat. I get enough of that off-line, being a pagan in the Bible Belt of the USA. I don't need it online too.

(In a side note: someone mentioned the geographic differences in religiosity. I grew up in a pretty open metropolitan area, so yes, the difference in attitude between here and there is extreme. I was utterly shocked to see a billboard-sized road sign saying "go to church or go to hell" right out where anyone could see it! Even worse when it turned out it's funded by the city via some round-about "community support and beautification" law. :\ How is that considered beautification?)

So... sorry, OP, but I guess until religion becomes a side-order thing like height or favorite coffee, there's always going to be tension. A few bigots on both sides ruin the fun for everyone. I'm sorry you've had bad experiences. :(

106: That actually doesn't surprise me. There's a pretty thick line betwene fantasy and reality—all sorts of people fanatsize about things they'd find awful in RL. (Rape fantasy as an example.) Gender just seems to be one of those things for you. Whatever rocks your boat.

115: That abbreviation had me confused for so long... I was like "waitwait, another Kingdom Hearts game? D: How did I miss it?"

135: Ohgods, me too. I'd die to have even a tenth of her approval for depicting Axel. She's just. That. Awesome. You're not alone, OP! (Ignore the drama...)

157: Wow, you just made me realize I have mostly the same thing going. :o I haven't seen any of those. (Does KH count as "new"? I don't know...) I don't think it's old-school elitism though... I just don't like moving on.

[identity profile] rex-dart.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh goodness, I never wanted to set myself up as some kind of judge for characterization. A huge proportion of KH fanfic is appalling all around and it's like people have never even played the game, much less paid attention to the characters. That's the way it is in any big fandom; look at Harry Potter. But when people think about it and create a thoughtful characterization of Axel, no matter how they turn out, who am I to say what's better? I can only make my arguments and discuss and agree to disagree about some things. But I don't think people need my approval at all.

Not that I'm not extremely flattered that you like the way I do him. ^_^;;
