129. Hmm, I definitely don't read Twilight for the romance. It's a nice addition and I do like Edward/Bella, but for me the intrigue is the vampires. I honestly could read a book of nothing but the Cullen family secrets lol.

129 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-06-23 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I can see that being a fun part of the book - and to be frank, when my roommate at the time handed me Twilight, she sold me on the fact it was about vampires. I love different vampire mythos, but in the process, Meyer just lost me. Which is fine and good and cool, because if anything, she did leave me with a four person baseball team of "Well we'd just be unfair in real life" to ponder over.

110. IAWTS.

151. I've heard horror stories about it, but lately I've been tempted to give ZZ a try. I suppose anything with Haman in it can't be all that bad.

N!S 2. Much as I like Sayla and Amuro--don't know why, but I've never been able to ship them. Sayla/Kai, though? I think I can see it.

151

(Anonymous) 2008-06-23 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
You should. It's not that bad. It's silly, but so is the original MSG, and it's a nice change of pace after the ending of Zeta. Also, unlike in Zeta where Kamille and Quattro pretty much did everything, other pilots are relevant in ZZ. And there's more character development.

149 but also all of you everywhere

[identity profile] ahvia.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I've been semi- following the threads on this secret here and I just wanna say, and this applies to SECRET and COMMENTS alike-- when you say things like "in b4" and "cry moar" and condescendingly calling others "bb", "hun", or use the cliched "I'm talking down to you but pretending I'm being nice" type posts makes it really hard to take you seriously. Commenting that the internet is serious business when someone is trying to make a point is also a huge cop-out. Chewing on someone's lack of punctuation during a discussion is tacky AND usually irrelevant. If you think someone's being whiny or "edgy", AT LEAST try to come up with an original way to phrase it!

That said,

say faggot to your friends who know when stuff is faggy and they think it's funny, DON'T use it in public places where people you don't know will see or hear it and might be offended.

If you are offended by it even when you know it's not intended as a hate slur, that's your right, and it's your right to ask them to stop if it's making you uncomfortable or you think they're being ignorant douches for carelessly using a slur. But just keep in mind that intention IS important, and giving it meaning where it has none is only going to prolong its negative effects. It's like a comment I remember reading a while back, about atheists using "goddammit"-- it doesn't MEAN the same thing to them as it would to a Christian, like faggot doesn't mean to a Fanperson Friend of the Internet what it means to An Angry and Prejudiced Older Man From the Deep South.

Re: 149 but also all of you everywhere

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I love you for this ♥ WELL SAID, RANDOM INTERNATE SANEPERSON, WELL SAID.

And yeah, I especially agree with the last point- I'm an atheist and I still say "goddamn it," "oh my god," and "Jesus!" when I'm fed up with something, but I don't have any baggage attached to it- it's just words that I'm used to saying, and I don't see the point in censoring myself just because I don't believe in God, when I don't have to prove anything to myself and never have to prove anything to anyone else. :/

What WTF'd me the most about this secret is the weirdness of what the OP is saying- they seem to be implying that as long as that person is gay, a total stranger can call them a faggot to their face and it's fine, but if a close friend of theirs interrupts their fangirling/fanboying to go "lol you faggot" and not mean it in any sort of insulting way, it's still OMG OFFENSIVE just because they're not gay themselves- like it's some kind of code word in a weird club. It's not a club, it's just a fact of some people's lives, and words only mean what definition we personally attach to them.

[identity profile] melengro.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
108. Really? It's the New Series that's overrated.

134. It'll go fine, trust me (er, not that I know him...).

149. Thank you. I've also been bashed (and have PTSD thanks to it) and there is nothing I hate more than hearing someone say that word - and personally, I don't care if you're straight, gay or anywhere in between, it doesn't make it hurt any less.

104. ... I want to be in this fandom. MUCH WANT. askjfhsak those girls look awesome.

108. Okay, I do hope people leave you alone, because if you've already stated you have tried watching quite a bit of it and just don't like it, they shouldn't still be going "OMG YOU SHOULD WATCH IT!" That said, if they don't know you have tried it, and they think it's something you might like, and suggest it, try not to get too upset about it? They're just trying to share something they like ♥

... and if they keep going "OMG YOU NEED TO WATCH THIZ =DDDDD" after you've told them you don't like it, kick them in the face. XD

*is a major Whofan, too XD WE'RE NOT ALL CRAZY I PROMISE*

109. I may be wrong, here, but if they're dealing with FTM, they probably aren't just doing it to avoid dealing with lesbianism. I... wouldn't see the logic there? I mean, why they would be doing a plotline with one that is arguably more taboo, and going "omg can't do that!" with the other.

111. Sadly, I was going to ask if that many people cared- enough to make this such a secret- and then realized... yes. Yes, they probably do. *sigh*

116. Then announce it to the world! Cats is still pretty gd epic. :>

117. ..................... fic? (DON'T TELL ME THERE IS NO FIC. IF THAT IS THE CASE, YOU ARE NOT DOING YOUR JOB PROPERLY, GOOD SIRMADAME.)

118. He looks like one of those characters I would absolutely adore. XD Don't feel bad!

126. pfffffffftHAHAHAHAHA ♥

130. It may be a travesty, but if someone writes fic, I WANT TO READ IT. I totally agree with the tone of your secret, too. Fucking OUT OF NOWHERE ships. XD

131. Oh god is there pairing wank in this fandom already? ): My solution to any love triangle is an OT3, koff koff

134. Fuck yeah Stephen Fry ♥♥♥

138. Without knowing who either of you are, and acknowledging that they may in fact deserve this, you do realize that with this secret you're the one who comes across as sounding a complete douche, not them, right?

142. Just that phrasing made me lol for a good two minutes. XD THANKS OP.

145. YOUR LIST MAKES ME HAPPY INSIDE. THROUGHOUT MY ENTIRE FORM. A TINGLING HAPPINESS OF BATSHIT INSANE MOSTLY-EVIL SCIENTIST/DOCTORS ♥ (What Are Your Thoughts on Herr Doktor from Hellsing? And aw fuck this is why I like Kururu so much, gd it XD)

149. Um... okay? I have too, and I still don't see what's such a big deal about straight people using the word faggot or fag in a non-insulting manner. Mostly because unless it's being wielded in a hurtful manner, the word sounds too funny to me to take seriously. XD; Plus, yanno, if you want to use the word yourself, it's ridiculous to be saying "WELL I'M ALLOWED AND IT'S FINE BUT IF YOU DO IT IT'S AUTOMATICALLY INSULTING"; if you hate the word that much, people, don't use it yourself. Why should it be okay for me, as a lesbian and a total stranger, to call you a faggot, and not for your friend to use the word jokingly or even affectionately? I'm just going to continue to use the word and not get my panties in a twist when my friends joke around and go "oh you fag" when they, yanno, don't mean it as an insult at all.

152. SOCUTE ♥ Don't worry about if it's canon or not- at least you see what attracts some of us to non-canon things, now? ♥

not!secret #1: HAHAHAA WHAT. AHAHAHAAH WHY IS THIS NOT IN THE USUAL "WHAT???" SECTION? X'D

not!secret #3: Right, because anything else he could have had it being couldn't have been mocked by everyone anyway. "OH, RIGHT, IT WAS ~ALIENS~ ALL ALONG." "OH, RIGHT, IT WAS AN ~APOCALYPSE~ SCENARIO." "OH, RIGHT, IT WAS THE ~BIG BAD GOVERNMENT~ AGAIN." The planet releasing a defense mechanism isn't a totally new idea, and it's one that makes just as much sense, in a movie-plot way, as anything else.

Also, ty 4 spoilers kjhakjgha D| WHY DID I IGNORE THE WARNIIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiings~?

I want to write fic. Like you have NO idea how much I want to write fic for it. Just let me watch a few episodes of House to get an idea of how he's really like (I've only been told about him. ._.;) And I'll like..maybe do a oneshot or something.

In the mean time I'm looking for fic for it. xD

149 - In music, bassoon is faggotto in Italian. In scores it is often shortened to Fag., causing much sniggering among my somewhat immature classmates.

Point is, I get tired of saying faggotto or faggotti so I just say fag(s). I'm not gay >: D

Sat, read all the responses, everyone's beat the "DOUBLE STANDARDS/RACISM/WORDS HAVE MEANING/blahblah" conversations to death.

I've only got one real thing to say here, and that's if you have a problem with your friends saying something around you? Tell or ask them to stop it. If they respect you, they'll keep it in mind and hold your request. If they don't, then you should just not hang around them. It's simple enough.

Honestly, I don't appreciate people using "Apple" or "Redskins" or shit like that when they're not talking about sports teams or something. I asked my friends to stop using it around me, and they stopped. It's not that hard to do.

[identity profile] eyefloss.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Instead of getting into this huge debate over the power of someone's words, just call them on it. If it bothers you that much, just say something along the lines of "Hey, could you guys stop please?" Chances are that they'll refrain from using it around you.

Really, you can't decide what is and what isn't going to hurt someone's feelings, so there's no point in arguing about it.

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. Let's try to address this once and for all in a sane way, because both sides have been making themselves look bad here- I'm lookin at YOU, anonymice (why does anonymous automatically seem to call for douchebaggery?)- or are just addressing a very small part of things, or from a perspective that makes sense, but isn't going quite far enough.

Yes, I'll admit right off the bat, I am one of those Privileged Few who maybe should not be able to talk about persecution because I am white. But look. I have been mocked for wearing glasses, mocked for liking to read and being quiet. No, not on the same level. I agree on that. I have also been called a faggot and a "fucking dyke," the latter not even for being one (though I am a lesbian), but because I cut my hair short like a boy's. (Don't know how that automatically makes me a "dyke," but okay. :|) I have been called a bitch, a cunt, and yes, a "fucking white-ass bitch" by a pissed off black girl, gasp and shock (and the first person to say THAT'S not racism simply because I'm white and she's black gets paunched over the Internets). She was just in a really bad mood and there were no hard feelings afterward, but the fact remains. I am an atheist, and am occasionally preached to about how my lifestyle and lack of belief in Zeus's less-fun, more-douchy imaginary brother will send me to hell and it will serve me right. I'm used to all of this, as much as anyone can be used to it.

No, I don't think words like faggot should be slung around as insults. But then, I don't think insults should be slung around like insults. I don't think anything should be slung around like insults, because that's REALLY INSULTING, duh. I think that as long as you get offended by a word being used in a manner not meant to be offensive, you're the only one giving it power- maybe you can't help it, because people do have trigger words sometimes, but you have to recognize that as a fact.

If a friend calls you a faggot and they're being silly or affectionate, it's not an insult. If some random other gay person calls you a faggot and they're being silly or affectionate, same. If either of those people calls you a faggot and is MEANING IT BADLY, that is when it is an insult.

If it is someone over the Internet, yes, it can be hard to tell. Especially with Anonymous, who seems to like stirring up wank. A good way to tell is to give them a poke- to say that you don't really feel comfortable with it, or ask if they know they're coming across as insulting. Odds are pretty good that they, just like any other person in real life, will retract it and/or not say it again if you simply give them a nudge that it's Not Okay to do to you. And if they laugh and keep it up, not caring about your feelings on the matter... well. No use getting mad about it, right? They're just assholes, and no use letting dumbasses over the ~Internet~ have any effect on your emotions or life.

It's the same thing in real life. I work at a job where it's common for me to get screamed at. And one thing I've learned is, you'll be called worse by better. Seriously. The people who have been saying it's "just a word" are only half-right... it is just a word, and words can be used in horrible ways, and words hurt. But if someone is ignorant enough to be using that word, if that's the worst thing they're doing to you?

They're not oppressing you. If they're keeping you from doing something, interfering with your life, putting you in physical danger, yes, my god, there is a problem. But I can listen to a man call me a bitch-ass faggot cunt all day long, and as long as he keeps it down to yelling, I'm not too moved. Not at all, actually. Because all he's doing is making himself look bad, and if he's that screwed up? I don't care about his opinion of me anyway.

... holy shit why is there a PART TWO? (this is of course addressing 149, lawlz)

This is easier said than done. I know it is. But even if you can't do it, you have to learn to acknowledge that it is the truth. These people who'll call you a faggot, a dyke, a nigger, a cunt, anything else... why do you care? In the end, why do you care? It's got a lot of bad weight, but when does that matter? When it's society, doing horrible things to you; when it's coming from people you care about. If it's coming from random people, I don't mind what they think of me. Not at all. Why should I?

Don't even hate them. Don't give them that sort of effect over you. Take the humor of it. They think they're being big and bad, they think their hate puffs them up, makes them superior to you. It doesn't. It just makes them burst a vessel hating, while you sit there and... have words go by. Words from someone whose opinion you should care less about, if they're that retarded (and yes, maybe I shouldn't use that word in that context, but I've been bending my vocab trying not to say it and I really can't think of a better word for it right now. So in it goes, and apologies to those offended). Don't hate them, or feel hurt; feel sorry for them if you can. Because it really makes sense: you have to put up with a few words from an asshole. They have to be an asshole. They have to be deluded enough to actually think they're superior. Even if they don't realize how bad it is... well. Would you want to be them? Didn't think so.

It might be hard, but in the end, try it: if you want to reclaim your pride and yourselves, don't worry about what a word means. If it's being tossed at you by someone unimportant who you wouldn't in a million years want to be, why would you want to be respected by them? They're the ones messed up in the head. Let them live much more obnoxious lives than yours, and go along with your day, and let it go.

TL;DR in the end why would you even care if the bitches stop the gd faggotry? They're the ones who're bitches, keep on being fags. ♥
